Poll Do you guys think marvel is a greedy company? (68 votes)

Yes 62%
No 40%

I just read an article that said some of The Avengers cast members were only paid 200,000. Now that is a considerable slap in the face to the cast members considering the fact The Avengers made well over a billion dollars. After reading the article it left me thinking with a question, Is marvel a greedy company? What do you guys think?

Maybe those cast members played a considerably small role in the movie?

In terms of Marvel in general I'm not sure, but I like what I've read so far and I'm looking forward to all the movies they're pumping out.

Well, since business is about making money, all companies are greedy (unless they are not-for-profit). Why do you think Marvel has a bajillion X-men and Avenger tiltles and DC has Batbooks coming out of every space? Why don't comic companies put effort into lesser known characters rather than give Batman another book? It's all about the money.

Greed is a part of business, Marvel's current problem is self indulgent writers and editorial staff who are more concerned with getting temporary bumps from movie fans than from making a consistent product. If they keep going the way they are, when the super hero movie fad passes they'll be dead in the water.

Apparently Robert Downey Jr made around $30 million from Avengers alone.

Not at all. they are in business to make money. If those people thought their time and talent was worth more than $200,000 they should have asked for more and if Marvel said no they should have moved to other roles. If the amount offered was too low no quality actors would take the role and marvel would up the price. Personally I Would not have paid any more than that for some of the cast. ( Scarlett Johansson for example)

Most of the actors in Avengers were just trying to raise their profile by starring opposite to RDJ. It's like interning for next to nothing at a prestigious firm. Happens all the time. RDJ on the other hand, banked it hard. He's going to bank the sequel for even more green. And all of us are going to swarm to the movies, eager to give this "greedy" company more of our money.

Because at the end of the day, we just don't care that much.

I don't think they are because of the film, the actors agreed to their wages, however they are greedy for comic money. There best selling comics are released fortnightly and there is 8 x-men titles.

@reignmaker: To be fair aside from the whole Mandarin thing, the movies are treating the characters with far more respect than the actual comics now days.

Yes they are, but I actually don't think $200,000 is that bad. For one, $200k is considerably more money then I make. For another, yes the Avengers made a billion dollars, but they didn't know it would do that before hand. In fact, anyone that would've claimed it would do so before it's release likely would've been laughed at. Marvel took a huge risk with Avengers, the movie actually could've been a colossal flop.

Downey (who got closer to $50 million), apparently got so much because his contract (back from Iron Man 1) gave him a percentage of any movie he stared as Iron Man in. This is a rare but not unheard of contract for Hollywood actors, and one that again could've been disastrous for him had the franchise failed.

That said, now that Marvel has succeeding in Hollywood, and the Avengers is arguably the current biggest name franchise in the industry, they really should give considerable raises to the cast and crew that made them successful.

That apparently is what Downey is fighting for, or at least what he's claiming. That he will only return to Marvel, if all the other actors are given bigger pay checks. While I don't think anyone should get as good a deal as Downey has, they can certainly afford to reach deeper into their pockets now.

That's on the movie front. On the comic front it's clear that they currently care more about making a quick buck with gimmicky and sensationalized stories like AvX or Superior Spider-Man then they are with making quality comic books. This is greedy, but since people still buy them, can't really blame them.

Not "greedy" the way I think you mean it (That being, ALL they care about is money) I think they care more about money than anything else (as businesses HAVE to..sorry, that's real-life. If your business doesn't make money, it ceases to exist.) But I'm sure they also care about making good product. Some more than others, to be sure, but I doubt they're sitting in offices saying "Put out crap, we don't care as long as it sells." Despite that much media (T.V. Movies, even comic-books) like to portray businesses this way, very few of them are like that. Now, the end product might be crap, and it might still make money, but that's never any decent business's goal. And as Marvel has been around for over 50 years, I doubt they lasted that long my having money be their ONLY object of desire. (Again, it is their number one desire, it has to be.) I think they came out with Av-X as a way to make quick sales, but I also think they wanted it to be good. (Didn't read it, so I don't know if it was or not.)

I mean, company's and corporations alike, by definition, HAVE to be greedy. They have no choice, they have to make a profit. If they make no profit, how can they continue to release the amazing stuff they do? Not overly greedy, though, just a company. It's what they do.

You do realize that actors are hired by contract. If they agreed to $200k, they get paid $200k. If the film is a massive box office flop and failure, they still get paid $200k. Otherwise, yes ALL corporations are greedy.

Is RDJ greedy for wanting to make $30 mil plus royalties off the movie? Everyone is fighting for pieces of the same pie. What is the threshold at which an individual or company goes from just wanting to make money to being greedy? Its pretty ambiguous.

Yes, I think Marvel is greedy, I'm reminded of it every time I look at a price on their trade paperbacks compared to what DC is offering.

Its not surprising that Marvel is greedy, the real question you should be asking is, do you think they are being ethical. Which I have no desire to answer.
