As a long time Spider-Man fan, it's come to my attention that there is a lot of controversy surrounding Spider-Man stories in terms of age. For instance, look up Linkara's review of One More Day (which I know most people hate as well, but his nagging on Spider-Man not being able to "grow up" really got my attention). I admit there are too many "boo-hoo he made a mistake" moments in comics, but I think that should apply to the character in general, regardless of his age.
I've also seen lots of anger surrounding Earth-616 Peter Parker now owning Parker Industries. It's character development, of course, and we all know Peter Parker is smart, so having him never be rewarded for this would seem like a writer attempt to keep him freshly young.
My personal favorite era of Spider-Man is the period when he was working for Horizon Labs, but at the same time I think most people are used to him being the high school student, like with Ultimate Spider-Man. I want to know what the fan base is more comfortable with, either from personal experience or just evidence you've seen (feedback to certain stories, movie focus, etc.). Adult or adolescent Spider-Man?
