With the focus more and more on movies, tv and net shows and the claim by some that comic books aren't making and haven't made money for a long time I wonder if the big two actually need to put out comics that people read. I'm sure they liked having readers, but since both companies are part of big multi-media corporations do they still need readers?
Do DC or Marvel actually need comic book readers anymore?
Comic books make plenty of money. Marvel and DC each pull in around 10-15 million on comics alone each month.
I'm pretty sure every MCU movie since The Avengers has made more than that in their first day.

Well duh, but they still make plenty of money is what I'm trying to say.
They could make it without selling comics, believe it or not. But a little extra dough never hurt nobody.
To exist no but the question is silly, do Apple need people to buy there desk tops to exist at this point, of course not but that doesn't mean a company stops making something as long as it's profitable one way or another.
The comics still pull in a few smeckles, increase brand awareness and can be used for some cheap publicity stunts without effecting the movies credibility.
