A few of the bigger wikis seem to omit this part, so maybe it's a history rewrite in progress. I thought Cyclops had to use glasses/visor to control his power because he got bashed in the head as a kid and had permanent damage. But whenever I see a new version of him in the reality hopping x-treme x-men, they all need visors. Have we ever seen a non injured Cyclops with full control without glasses? (aside from x-men evolution?)
Cyclops the 4-eyes?

He's had full control without his glasses at various times in 616 but it's usually quickly dropped.
This.
It's probably most likely that it's just such a defining trait of the character that w/o the red glasses or visor no one would recognize him. I mean that's why he's called "Cyclops" the visor makes it look like he's got a single eye that shoots red beams.
It could be argued that up to a point, in order for Scott to become any version of Cyclops, certain events have to play out to shape his personality in such a way for him to become a successful, driven, Cyclops. So while the specifics may change, in every dimension where Scott becomes a Cyclops we'd be interested in seeing, he experiences trauma that damages his brain.
... Which has unfortunate implications, if true...

And non 616's that haven't been knocked in the head? http://marvel.wikia.com/Cyclops All those have specs? Is there some inter-dimensional conspiracy to kabonk summers in every incarnation, or is there another reason he needs the glasses?
OH! I LIKE that idea! It IS odd that they All seem to need visors... On the other hand... If they're not using visors, why would they be called cyclops?
A plot by lenscrafters to make up for the loss of business due to Lasik?
Wiki says
The early accounts in the X-Men comics use flashbacks to tell the origin story of Scott parachuting from his parents' plane. The flashbacks are often told from various narrative perspectives and place different emphasis on the events of this period. Scott's poor control over his power have been attributed to events in his childhood. In Uncanny X-Men #156, Scott's parachute caught fire and Scott struck his head upon landing. This caused brain damage to Scott which is responsible for his poor control over his optic blasts. Several origin stories do not feature the head injury account with X-Men Origins: Cyclops #1 being the most recent. The head injury account has also been retconned in Astonishing X-Men Vol. 2 as being due to a self-imposed mental block he made as a child to deal with the traumatic events of his life. With the help of Emma Frost, Scott is able to briefly bypass his own mental block and control his powers, though he reveals that his control is waning and temporary
Either way it should be different across origins
