  1. For the Man Who Has Everything (My favorite Superman story, overall just great and one of my favorites)
  2. Kingdom Come (One of my favorite stories, period. It'd be higher, but I don't really feel like it's enough about Superman himself to be #1)
  3. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? (A great story that shows the possible end to Superman. Honestly if they were to ever retire the Man of Steel this is the story I'd want him to end with)
  4. All-Star Superman (Some of the best stuff in the Superman mythos condensed into one comic.)
  5. Superman: Red Son (This would be higher as I enjoyed it more than All-Star Superman and Whatever Happened to The Man of Tomorrow, but honestly it doesn't feel like a true blue Superman story even if it's great.)

1. Must There Be A Superman? (This was the game changing story for Superman and maybe even for superhero comics in general. Prior to this, the only ethical questions that Superman ever had to face were of the type 'Do I save Lois Lane, or do I save Metropolis?' The moral dilemma of this issue is much larger, and has implications that resound in Superman stories to this day.)

2. The Sweetheart Superman Forgot (Begins the saga of Clark's relationship with Sally Selwyn - the most tragic love affair in the entire Superman lexicon. The list only mentions the story in Superman #165, but the story arc continues in Superman #169. The story is all the more tragic because in one of those life-imitates-art type coincidences, parts of the story prefigure actual events in the life of Superman actor Christopher Reeve.)

3. The Man of Steel (The definitive version of Superman's origin. Establishes most of the major players in the Superman mythos in a logical order and aligns Superman with the modern era. All in an entertaining six-issue miniseries. This is the series that made Superman comics fun again.)

4. Superman for All Seasons (Four aspects of Superman's life are highlighted in four different issues, each reflected visually and metaphorically in the four seasons. It's a bittersweet slice of Americana that deals with growing up and change and the positive and negative twists and turns of life that are universal. This is perhaps the most touching Superman story ever to see print.)

5. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? (Just like The Dark Knight Returns was the Ragnarok for Batman, this was the end-of-days story for Superman. Like most of the greatest Superman stories, this story is about more than just Superman; it's a farewell to a more innocent era of the comics medium itself.)

1 vote for For the Man Who Has Everything: Not just one of my favourite Superman stories but one of my favourite from Alan Moore as well.

1 vote for Superman For All Seasons: This is such a simple and beautiful story with really unique art from Tim Sale who does amazing vistas.

1 vote for Superman - Birthright: This is my favourite modern telling of Superman's origin in which Mark Waid restores great elements to the mythos that John Byrne removed.

1 vote for All-Star Superman: Grant Morrison made me love the silver age Superman and proved that incarnation could work in a modern story.

1 vote for Superman - Secret Identity: This is my favourite elseworlds-style Superman story.

Only 5 votes? Tough call. But I'll narrow it down:

  1. For The Man Who Has Everything - Hands down one of my favourite Superman stories and one of my favourite Alan Moore stories too.
  2. All Star Superman - One of the definitive Superman stories of all time and a personal love of mine.
  3. What's so Funny about Truth, Justice and the America Way - A quintessential look at what makes Superman who he is.
  4. Brainiac - An excellent Superman story by Johns with fantastic artwork by Gary Frank.
  5. Superman (1939) #247 ("Must there be a Superman?") - Another of my all time favourite Superman stories and a moving tale of Superman's impact on humanity as well as challenging his role as a hero and protector of Earth.

@Lvenger: @Squalleon: @SandMan_: and this is one reason we do cosigning: you get to pick all your favorates and then you get to vote again for your top 5 (or however you want to use your 5 votes). to answer your question, Squ, you can pick any 5 you want. However you want to use your 5 votes (as long as you use just that...5 votes (no more no less...).

Sandman_: esentially, yes...

Here's my votes:

  1. Superman #53 ("The Origin of Superman") - What could be a more important to Superman than this story? Even if they have to change the origin because of the lawsuit, this tale will always stand out as a definitive classic.
  2. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? - The end of Superman, the way Superman should end. This story was awesome.
  3. Superman vs. Aliens - I liked this story for two reasons: 1) it re-introduced Kara from Argo City, when Supergirl was the Matrix-Supergirl. I was just disappointed that they didn't do much more with her after this series (I think she was seen one other time). 2) It highlighted the "Superman doesn't kill" rule, at a time that cynical readers were really questioning it, and showed how it works, even against creatures thatanyonewould kill.
  4. Superman: The Dark Side - This is still one of my favorite Superman stories. It justfelt rightto have Superman involved with the New Gods. He should be epic like that. The Kansas farm boy is cool and all, but his power is so grandiose, that having him stop yet another armed gunman, or the Toyman or Prankster, seems like swatting flies with a nuclear bomb. He needs more stories like The Dark Side and...
  5. All-Star Superman - This story didsuchan excellent job with both the "bumbling Clark Kent" persona, and with having adventures of absolutely epic scope. I wish the main DCU Superman stories were more like this.

It was fun.

I may change the value of FOVs because of how drastic a single vote can change the list, but we'll see. I may play with it...

For the Man Who Has Everything

Must There Be A Superman?

Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

All-Star Superman

Kingdom Come

###

It's too bad I didn't see this a lot earlier(i.e. in the nomination part), then my last vote would have had the issue where Superman-Prime from the One Million timeline, replace Kingdom Come :P Since that story really shows the full extend of Superman's nigh-unlimited potential.

It should be 1 vote only per story!*

Otherwise the final result will be unbalanced and pointless!

Superman: Red Son is my favorite story and I'd like to see it win but not like this. Another example: If 9 users vote for story A and 2 users throw in all their votes for story B! What kind of result would that be? The problem clearly is the factor 5 here.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm calling the Justice League now...

For the Man Who Has Everything

A vote each for all.

well, like I said above your comment:

so I wouldn't change how we do things (each person has 5 votes and that isn't going to change). What might change is the value of a single vote because we want cosigning to be worth a little bit less, but given how many less cosigns we had than previous lists, it might be easier to change the value. but like I said...I may play with it...but we're not going to redo any votes (it'll be easy to change a number rather than contact 16+ people...

I agree.

(I actually incorrectly assumed it was 1 FOV / voter / story when I voted)

Here are my 2 cents:

We would get less participants if we did a regulated system than we do with this free form. I understand your concern but my concern is to involve more of the community than we already do. There are a number of users who have said they don't like/read, so if I can get user doesn't read superman but knows a small number like one or so superman stories I will allow them to vote.

Even if everyone was able to pick 5 stories, I can't really take the time to contact those users with multiple votes for 1 story because I'm busy contacting users to get this project more community involvement. So if you think the system is flawed, I invite you to fix it hopefully that doesn't sound mean or anything...

@SirMethos: I am going to count everything except the last vote because we do have "DC One Million" on the list (it's the arc rather than the individual issue, but same difference...). Up to you if you want to vote for kingdom come or One Million...

@The Poet:

I don't see how that would limit community involvement at all. No one says anyone has to use all five of their votes. If there is a user that only knows one story and they like it, they can vote (once) for that story (giving it 5 points).

They still contribute to the rankings since that one story gets 5 more points. And they need not have read or liked anything else.

But what they can't do is suddenly jump any single story twenty or more points in the rankings because it's the only one they know or like.

If someone thinks 'Red Son' is the only good Superman story ever written, they are still affecting the outcome by voting for it (and only for it) because they are in effect adding 5 points to one story alone (effectively withholding 20 points from all other stories). But they aren't doing so in an unbalancing way.

Easy fix. No sweat. :)

No, it just means "Read more Superman" - as there's 73 years worth of good stuff (June 1938-August 2011 HA!)
