Welcome to the Community Step of our Spider-man Stories List!

What We've done thus far:

Comic Vine's Top 100 Spider-man Universe Stories: Sign-up

FIRST: we collected the initial nominators who included: chalkshark, cyberchop979, Duo_forbidden, etragedy, Gambit1024, guttridgeb, Haydenclaireheroes, IanBeale, impossibilly, kfhrfdu_89_76k, Lvenger, michaelthemighty17, Moonchilde, Onemoreposter, Sora_thekey, SpidermanWins, Strider92, and TheAcidSkull.

each nominated 5 (or so) stories to make a list of 100 stories.

NOW:

We are doing COMMUNITY NOMINATIONS, which is where everyone has the importunity to:

  • Nominate Stories that are missing (this includes individual issues, arcs, mini series with a focus on Spider-man or Spider-man related characters).
Nomination Requirements: Each story must have a page on comic vine AND you have to write 3+ sentences on why they should be on the list

or...

  • Co-sign Existing Stories (add you name to your favorite stories to add points to them!)

Community Nominations and Cosigning will end Wednesday, March 20th, 2013 so that's 2 weeks to get those cosigns/nominations in!

Nomination: The Amazing Spider-Man #18 - "The End of Spider-Man!"

Reason: the issue relentlessly pounds the reader with Parker's daily problems - Jameson slamming him in print and on TV, Aunt May sick, money running out, Peter's schoolwork suffering, relationship problems with Betty Brant, and Flash Thompson getting himself into trouble trying to defend Spider-Man. Finally, at wit's end, Peter Parker tosses the Spider-Man suit in the trash. But as Aunt May fights her way to recover, and reminds him that Parkers aren't quitters, he realizes that Spider-Man is who he was born to be!

Nomination: Ultimate Spider-Man #8-13 - 'Learning Curve'

Reason: One of the biggest problems with the initial conception of Spider-Man, is that it stretched credibility that Peter Parker could be a genius chemist who spent hours in a lab, and had a social life, and took care of Aunt May, and fought crime as Spider-Man, and still managed to be a top photographer contributing to New York's largest circulating daily publication. Brian Michael Bendis fixes that by having Peter work part time maintaining The Daily Bugle website, which is way more believable in a modern context. The main plot is also a good one: Spidey decides to go after organized crime, which pits him against The Kingpin. As the title suggests, he quickly learns that power comes in many forms, and The Kingpin has lots of it, connections, smarts, ruthlessness, money, and superpowered henchmen of his own, including The Enforcers and Electro. And if all that weren't enough, the romance between Peter and Mary Jane is smoldering hot!

Nomination: The Amazing Spider-Man #15 - 'Kraven the Hunter!'

Reason: The first appearance of Kraven the Hunter ranks up there with the first appearance of Doctor Octopus as one of the greatest of the early issues of The Amazing Spider-Man. The Chameleon is back in town and when he narrowly escapes capture by Spider-Man, he reaches the conclusion that he will never be safe as long as Spider-Man is about. Thus he contacts the one person he thinks can successfully hunt down and kill Spider-Man, a big game hunter named Kraven. The final battle between Kraven and Spider-Man is one of the best fights in Marvel's Silver Age - the two seem so evenly matched.

Nomination: The Amazing Spider-Man #24 - "Spider-Man Goes Mad!"

Reason: This is a very different kind of Spider-Man story. It starts out the same as many of the early Spider-Man issues. Peter Parker has financial woes. Peter Parker has love life woes. Peter Parker has trouble with Flash Thompson. And, J. Jonah Jameson is smearing Spider-Man in the press. But then it takes a right turn when it comes to the main plot. Instead of Spider-Man fighting one of his regular opponents who's been released from prison only to plan a new crime caper, it features a psychiatrist who tells Jameson that in his expert opinion, Spider-Man is on the verge of losing his sanity. Peter initially dismisses the notion, but soon he starts worrying and hallucinating, and he realizes there might be something to that claim.

Nomination: The Amazing Spider-Man #31-33 - The Final Chapter

Reason: Unlike DC Comics during the Silver Age, Marvel comics weren't stagnant. During this period Peter Parker goes off to college for the first time - there he meets some people who will play a big role in his future - Professor Warren, Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy! Meanwhile he's trying to stop the theft of nuclear materials, and he learns that Aunt May is not only sick but dying! Things go from bad to worse when Aunt May slips into a coma and Spider-Man learns that he's responsible for her condition - and the keys to her salvation may be held by his old enemies! But no matter how bad things get, Spider-Man just will not give up; pushing himself beyond anything he's ever done before! This story arc has one of the 50 Marvel Moments chosen by Stan Lee and Roy Thomas and is #3 on the list of 100 Greatest Marvels of All Time!

I thought we were only supposed to cosign, like, five issues. Perhaps I'm misremembering, or I just missed that change in procedure. That being the case....I cosign them all! Just kidding. These are the ones that get my support. I'm going to stick with just 5. Seems a more manageable number.

  1. Kraven's Last Hunt (Story Arc) (Amazing Spider-Man#293-294, Spectacular Spider-Man #131-132, Web Of Spider-Man #31-32)... Would have nominated it myself, but someone...Moonchilde, I think... beat me to it.
  2. The Death of Jean DeWolff (Story Arc)( Spectaculat Spider-Man #107-110)... To this day, it's still my favorite Spider-Man story
  3. Nothing Can Stop The Juggernaut (Story Arc) (Amazing Spider-Man #229-230)... Probably one of the best underdog stories of all time.
  4. Spider-Man Blue-2002 Mini-Series... The Sale artwork alone would have put it here, but it's also a wonderfully nostalgic look back at Spider-Man
  5. Amazing Fantasy #15-1962... Wouldn't be here without that one.

Oh... the title of Amazing Spider-Man Annual #14 was not "The Book Of The Vishanti". It's "The Bend Sinister". I realize this site has it listed as "The Book Of The Vishanti". This site is wrong. Just because the words "Book Of The Vishanti" are on the front page, does not actually mean that it's the title. It's an easy enough mistake to make, but it is a mistake. Just saying.

@chalkshark: there is no set amount for cosigns. You are thinking of the 5 votes for final order voting. You can cosign any number of them on up to the total amount

Co-Sign:

Amazing Spider-Man Annual 21

Amazing Spider-Man (Vol.2) 50

Nominate:

Amazing Spider-Man 41-43: I shall lump all three as its own arc, simply because of Rhino, his first appearance. Issue 41 features his first appearance and first defeat by Spider-Man, 42 features his attempt to escape, and 43 features his escape, only to be defeated a bit more definitively that time, by Spider-Man. In between featured J Jonah Jameson's son, John, and best of all, the first full introduction of Mary Jane Watson!

Sensational Spider-Man Annual 1: THE sadly, the twilight and last major beautiful breath of the Peter Parker / Mary Jane marriage (CURSE YOU CUP A JOE!!!!). In the middle of "Back in Black", Mary Jane and Peter Parker, even in the midst of dealing with SHIELD threatening to arrest them, finds themselves in the midsts of recollecting their relationship, and they meant to each other. Plenty of beautifully colored flashback scenes, moments we may even say looks even more beautiful than some of the original classic Amazing Spider-Man issues some are taken from.

"Web of Death" Amazing Spider-Man 397-398, Spectacular Spider-Man 220-221: Forget the superficially over-buffed up babe Stunner, forget the neck snapping by Kaine; this is Doctor Octopus / Spider-Man relationship defined. Delirious and dying from a poison previously poisoned by the Vulture's vulture, whose the man who came to save Spider-Man? Even after unmasking, Otto still ran the tests, eventually did cure him. Why? Because their emnity "brings balance" to his life.

And another moment of note, MARY JANE WATSON-PARKER WAS PREGNANT!!!!!!

Untold Tales of Spider-Man 7: I LOVED that series, most consistently picked up Spider-series when I was a kid, seven, however, shall be the noted number for this poll. My first full view of Electro, in all his electrifying glory, backed up with Doctor Winslow Winkler, whom we first met, and witnessed his grisly demise in Amazing 49-51 (keep in mind this Untold Tales is set shortly after Amazing 9), and the way they got Spidey under their mercy: an eye appointment! Still worried by Aunt May over his breakage of glasses, his eye visit was met with rather "brainwashing" results! If it wasn't for the charismatic actions of a certain gal we all first met in only a couple panels of Amazing Fantasy 15, and was an important part of the UNTOLD TALES title, until a most tragic issue only a handful of issues after this one; Sally Avril, Spidey's goose most likely would have been cooked.

Amazing Spider-Man 256-258: The Puma! One of my favorite Spider-sparring partners (to say the least, since they did have a few violent rumbles over the years, if he's not fully considered a "villain" due to his nature 1/2 the time), hired by the Rose (another favorite legitably evil Spider-Fiend), to assasinate Spider-Man! Spidey's battle with Puma lasted the entire issue 257, with defenses on his side, the Black Cat, and his then-very costume, whom Puma was the first who determined it was "organic", freaking Spidey enough to run tests with Reed Richards, only to find out it was an alien symbiote!

Revelation Number two that story: Not even shutting her in from Puma's crashing mid-previous conversation could stop this one: Mary Jane lets Petey know she knows he's Spider-Man!

OK, I'm done for now, but not before a big BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! on anything One More Day-Post.

@ngroove:

Why doesn`t anyone read what has been nominated already!? Meaning, ASM 41-43 have been nominated already. Others are fine, though.

Besides, Brand new day was awesome.

Anyone who supports a Spider-Man without Mary Jane Watson-PARKER are pure blasphemers of "Spider-Fans" in my eyes - no, I am not joking, I am most serious.

Again, any and all who supports "One More Day" and beyond ("Big Time", "Spider Island", "Ends of the Earth", and this abominable "Superior Spider-Man"), until "all is rectified", are considered blasphemers, not true "Spider-Fans" in my eyes...

Queseda may have have started with his "anti-marriage" crusade, Slott continues it. Sorry, but Spidey is complete crap to me, past five years, until all is corrected between (real) Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson (PARKER again, hopefully sometime while I'm still young) again, IF it lasts a lot more than just a "casual date" before Spidey pulls his "I can't be with you as long as I'm Spider-Man" Bull-Crap! Queseda and Slott had "trolled", claiming in solicitations, them back together at least three times between "One Moment In Time" to "Superior Spider-Man" (for at least A Peter Parker), only when it comes, to pull darn "ship-teases", and even one "Monkey's Paw" each darn time, which only infuriates me more. Yet, I can NEVER express it on Comicbookresources, as long as "Steve Wacker" and "Dan Slott" hovers around there, all the time, sarcastically snarking all whose views are outside of their own.

@ngroove: Fine it's your opinion. Things do change but they also set back to the status quo if you recall. Hal came back as Green Lantern, Barry as the Flash. What goes around comes around in time

@clonesaga2099:

Could you maybe nominate The Spider totem instead? Since the life and death is a part of it. I`ll have to check from The Poet, if another really big story (besides Gauntlet) is allowed. I`m pretty sure it would be. But, up to you.

You sure we can make the deadline with only 3 pages of cosigns and nominations?

#42 Posted by The Poet (8335 posts) - - Show Bio

@Lvenger: probably we could with just what we have, but I was planning on extending it for other reasons so it works...

I won't set a real deadline for cosigning and such. We'll see how we look a week from now and if we need to extend it we can (and my bet is that we will extend it...)

@The Poet: I'm scouring my Spider-Man comics to see if I can suggest anything else but most of my choices are taken. I'll see what I can do...

#44 Posted by The Poet (8335 posts) - - Show Bio

@Lvenger: well, we have over 100 so we have our quantity so right now we just need to think about if there any other quality stories out there that people would think are missing.

the main thing we need to think about is cosigns since we will using those to make our inital order. Now, I'm going to spend Sunday catching up on fixing my spreadsheet with a copy of the contents of this thread thus far. So, I'm not sure what we look like right now but I do think we could survive on just ordering it by what we have right now. However, it never hurts to get more participants when it comes to cosigning...
