I am loving Scarlet Spider, it's so fresh and new, it's really been a long time since I can remember Marvel launching a series set in a new location, with a new supporting cast, and new enemies. When people come into my store and ask for a Marvel book that they can just jump right into, that's always what I recommend to them.
However, I still have to vote for Superior Foes. It's an incredible book. I didn't really realize how much I loved it until last week when I was talking with some people about it and we couldn't stop laughing at how hilarious it is. For anybody out there who loves Matt Fraction's Hawkeye and want something similar, this is the next best thing on the shelves.
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man is hands down the most well written character piece and has the most engaging cast.
Scarlet Spider seems to be getting a lot of love on this poll, but, based on sales (Scarlet Spider was not even on Diamond's Top 100 in July), I think it will be cancelled before the Spring. To be fair, I think Marvel has already confirmed Venom's cancellation.
@jonny_anonymous: It's not...bad. I checked out the first issues and it was decent. Though I can feels sometimes that they felt like they needed a Carnage book and threw something together. Okay, I'm being harsh. The covers are great and so is the art, but the dialogue isn't holding up. I'd give it 3/5
This has to be the toughest choice I've ever made... I adore every bit of Scarlet Spider and Ultimate Spider-Man.
I'm giving the slight edge to Ultimate here. I love the new tone of the book, the unpredictability of Miles and the ever changing supporting cast. Everything I just said goes ditto for Scarlet Spider but I had to make a choice and I handed it to Ultimate because it is easily the most underrated book on this list.
I really like Superior Spider-Man, Scarlet Spider, Venom, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. Hell those four titles alone are solo books I look forward to every month and there some of my all time favorite Marvel characters, (Superior Spider-Man is becoming on of my favorites). Amazing Spider-Man is also one of my favorites. I'm thinking about checking out Superior Spider-Man Team-Up and Superior Carnage.
I went with Superior Spider-Man on this one. I'm having so much fun reading that book. There are more than enough anti-hero books on the market but there aren't nearly as many anti-villain stories to choose from. On a side note I can't wait for Lex Luthor in villains month. Both Team-Up and Superior Foes are terrific as well but neither have gotten the chance to thrive just yet.
I've read a little bit of both Venom and Scarlet Spider. I can tell that they're both high quality but they're not really grabbing me. To me Scarlet Spider is like if Spider Man was more like a manga. I don't mean that to sound derisive or anything, I just found some of the more melodramatic scenes to be very reminiscent of that style of story telling. I really like Yost's writing too. They both look great and read well but you can't always keep up and read everything in today's economy.
