Poll Christopher Nolan vs Joss Whedon. Who is the better writer and director? This is for Tv and film. (69 votes)

Nolan all the way 52%
Whedon all the way 9%
Too close to judge 0%
Their work is too different to judge 14%
They are both equally great writers/directors 3%
Mostly Nolan, but Whedon surpassed him some aspects 6%
Mostly Whedon, but Nolan surpasses him in some aspects 6%
Ends in sex 4%
Ends in a fistfight 1%
Ends in Buffy with Batman-voice 4%

Personally, Joss Whedon is my favorite writer and director. I discovered him during a very difficult portion of my life and shows like Buffy, Firefly and Doll House all changed the way I look at humanity and life in general. Even the things that I think are bad compared to the rest of what he has under his belt I still love.

They are completely different. It's like trying to compare and contrast All New Doop to The Walking Dead.

@the_stegman:

Nolan hasn't done TV work so it's weird to split them like that.

This.

I like Whedon. Some of his work in Comics is phenomenal and I enjoyed Angel but he hasn't made 8 great movies in a row.

That was more me just sharing my love for Whedon's shows more than comparing them.

No Caption Provided

Nolan problems are based on his writing and Whedon problem are based on his directing.

Their strong point are the other way around.

i think jonathon is the better writer of the two brothers (TDK, memento, intersteller, prestige) but chris has a small advantage over whedon as inception, prestige, tdk and BB are better than any movie whedon wrote (avengers is better than bb actually). and plus didnt whedon write thor? psh

Joss Whedon did not write Thor, he just directed the post-credits scene. I think that Nolan was a much better writer earlier in his career but lately it has become his weak-point. Now when I say weak-point, I'm not saying he's terrible at it, I think he is still a good writer but he has regressed a little. A lot of that has to do with the fact that his recent movies seem to lack a certain level of humanity because Nolan is trying so hard to make quotable lines, that the dialogue no longer feels natural and the characters feel more like plastic, rather than actual human characters that I can get attached to, which does do some harm to the film regarding the dramatic elements. This was especially true in Inception. Now that doesn't mean that his new movies are terrible because they're not, I like all of them except for DKR but I just think that his writing has taken a step backwards.

@youknowwhattodo: but writing dialogue is only half (maybe 3/4) of writing, im just tossing numbers out there, because there still is a story to be written. and yes i agree with his dialogue at some points in inception and TDKR, but i thought the dialogue was excellent in prestige and TDK (everytime joke spoke was great imo).

but to compare them, whedon hasnt wrote anything remarkable... avengers was good, but too much cheesy humor, cabin in the woods? much ado? please these movies don't even compare to nolans work. Now saying that i havent really seen his TV shows, firefly and buffy, so im just talking about his movies. Whedon has potential but his list of movies hes done is not impressive to me

Yeah, I think they are pretty close, although I prefer Insomnia just by a little, possibly because we've got to see Batman and Wolverine in the same movie.

Nolan is way better. Whedon wishes he had half as the talent as Nolan has.

Memento > Any Whedon script

TDK > Any Whedon product.

I still enjoy Whedon's work but he's not that great, imo.

Nolan has not even done television. His work is miles beyond Whedon's in film, though.
