Comic Vine is about to go through some big changes. We're getting a complete makeover. If you've checked out our sister site GiantBomb.com lately, you have a good idea what to expect. While the two sites will look very similar, there are some differences as some comic book data works differently than video game data.

What we want you to do is check out the beta site. Right now.

http://beta.comicvine.com/

Actually, hopefully you're still here reading this.

Our engineers have been working day and night (almost) in making the new site happen. That's why we had new sign ups turned off, to ensure those new accounts would exist on the new platform. We want you to check out the beta and play around. Check out the new features but more importantly, we'd like to find and squash all the bugs before the new version launches.

Dave "Captain Cascader" Snider has a post over they explaining some of the changes. You can find that post on the front page, the news page or just by clicking HERE. It even explains how the let us know about a bug you find. The idea is to find and fix the bugs ASAP.

You'll notice some of the data over there seems a little outdated. It's a snapshot of the site from a bit a go. Don't worry, everything up through this Friday will carry over.

When is the change happening?

This is the important part. We will be putting this current live site in lock-down mode this weekend. That means any edits, submissions, blogs, reviews, etc you add after Friday, March 22, 2013, WILL NOT CARRY OVER TO THE NEW SITE. There should be a reminder on the screen letting you know we are in lock-down mode.

How long until we can add stuff?

The goal is Tuesday. The main indicator is you will notice a brand new site when you click on ComicVine.com.

So please check out the site. Try things out. Any edits made in the beta will not carry over. Which is why you can find the first issue of DOCTOR GUERRERO: MAN OF SCIENCE.

Check out the beta and help us find any bugs.

This should be very cool, but I'm also a little sad. I like watching some of the Comic Vine videos on my Kindle Fire. The new Giant Bomb videos don't work on my Kindle after the switch,

I do appreciate the warning about the edits this weekend. I was planning on editing a few pages.

I've checked it out. Love the blog stats on my blog page.

Edit:

"BATGIRL on Thursday on the CW!" What!?

Cool I've found out when the switch over takes place.

So I guess its safe to assume that the best way to listen to the podcast this week is through iTunes.

I'm really disappointed the beta url isn't raynertacos.comicvine.com

Got to say I think I'm going to miss the old site (not that I don't love the new one). R.I.P Current Comicvine.

#11 Posted by CrisisRedHood (12 posts) - - Show Bio

LOL. Thanks for posting my image on to the site. For that I have a special gift for you at WonderCon. Find the guy dressed as Red Hood looking for a girl dressed as X-23.

@CrisisRedHood: Haha. Okay. Maybe you could tweet me a pic once your there.

I noticed the search feature no longer has the year the particular comic volume started. This made it easy to select which series I was looking for based on the year which comes in handy when you're searching a comic that's had many volumes. Are you guys gonna add that back in?

#14 Posted by Grey56 (753 posts) - - Show Bio

Good deal - hopefully by Tuesday then new sign ups will again be allowed? ?

#15 Posted by Crimson Eagle (1855 posts) - - Show Bio

I tried going through to beta by logging in but it won't let me access my account. I'm on an iPad at the moment is it because of that or is it because I have to create a new account (btw I am typing my password correctly :P).

Year will be added to the search!

!!!

Can't wait for it do be launched!

^__^

#18 Posted by Crimson Eagle (1855 posts) - - Show Bio

Never mind on what happened, I figured out what happened. Apparently when I log in, my username must be typed in with lowercase letters and an underscore. So apparently I typed my username wrong on beta @_@. Also, I can't really type using my iPad on the site, will this be temporary or will it be developed?

#19 Posted by Crimson Eagle (1855 posts) - - Show Bio

Again please forget my comment, I figured out its just me. -_-

Did you try using your E-mail as the username? I couldn't get in with just my Username, but using my email worked for me.

I like the new site alot. Seems your profile background is now a banner of sorts. I already asked this on the beta page on the new site, but I figure I'll ask it here as well. Anyone know the dimensions for the banner? I wanna use my amateur photoshop skills to make a banner for when the site is live.

Will the new site have a more nuanced rating system?

Are we gonna get updated with everything that hasn't been applied to the site, yet? (reviews, wiki edits, points, etc)

Seems like everything that was in between the time period of January 22nd till now has disappeared in the Beta site.

Will they fix this bug before they launch the site?

Another thing you guys should apply to the site is a section for reviews for avid comic reviewers such as myself and add complimentary and needs to satisfy the general audience. I believe user reviews (and staff reviews) is a main feature on CV that attracts new users, as well as promote the specific title, issue, etc and think should be paid close attention to.

Hoping to see some improvements on the review homepage!

Overall, love the Beta so far!

Love the new site, it supports mobile much better than the current one. Big respect to the creators, this is beyond spectacular.

Finally managed to log on to the new version and I am impressed on all fronts. Top notch job, love how everything is set up thus far, love the appearance. Love how the Edits, Lists and the pages are set up now, much more appealing and easier to access. You guys kicked some serious ass on this new version. Awesome!

I can't stop looking at the 1 pixel gap between the green line and fade out gradient of the first news item :D Just add top: -1px in the .kubrick-info class and this should be fixed.

Will the Comic Vine API be updated as well? I remember trying it out a few months back but it was lacking advanced search options / sorting.

i only use this site for movie news and title announcements and stuff like writer changes. as long as i get that still im good

Thanks for the tip, but I'm not sure how I access HTML5 Mode via the Kindle Fire's web browser. I'll see what I can find.

@RazzaTazz: So will all my stuff transfer over or will I have to repost it? Its okay if I have to I'm just curious.

The new site will be HERE. ComicVine.com will still be ComicVine.com. In other words, Mon. or Tues, whenever the change happens, it'll be here. You won't have to go elsewhere. The beta is a separate thing. That's why you're allowed to play around without worrying about messing things up. That stuff will not transfer over.

i hate...HATE what the new site did to the images, adding them and tagging them and putting them in galleries is just a pain

#45 Posted by Toastalchemist (169 posts) - - Show Bio

Why do people always have to change their websites? Can't they just leave it alone, if it works? This isn't an attack against Comicvine, I'm just curious why big companies constantly update their sites when the old versions work fine. It applies to several other sites too (see: youtube).

@joshmightbe said:

Part of the issue here is that when Whiskey Media split, that they took their platform with them (which is the one that we know) CV is required to move away from this platform, and they have. So essentially once the new site is up, CV can fulfill their legal responsibility to build their own site. This means that what you see now will effectively be gone forever. Just as a note though, the moderators will still be looking at this site up until it is shut down, and actions here will still affect those on the new site. So just because this site will be on lockdown, no one should think it is an excuse to say the things that or do the things that they shouldnt.

OK, but the new site is still in the implementation phase and if there is something wrong make a suggestion, don't just complain. The techs can do something with a suggestion perhaps, complaints go nowhere though. Embrace the light!

#48 Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus (6885 posts) - - Show Bio

Kinda sad to see the questing stuff didn't translate over to the new site, but I suppose if there aren't enough people doing it that you can't really do anything about that. Gosh, and I stood right on the border between Level 33 and Level 34 for the longest time too and never got a chance to advance :-/

#49 Posted by joshmightbe (25021 posts) - - Show Bio

@G-Man: Thanks for clearing that up.

@RazzaTazz: cool, I was more asking to see if I needed to change the book mark on my chrome but since it will still be on comicvine.com I think the button should still work.

@RedheadedAtrocitus: I believe that the quests scores are being saved for future reference, and that the quests are being sidelined for now. It might be permanent or it might be temporary. New Cv will be so awesome that we won't need quests though.
