'Character of the Month' Discussion Thread!

Hello there, random Viner, and thanks for showing some interest in our Character of the Month segment! In case you haven't heard by now, this segment gives us the chance to praise a specific character (or maybe even a team) for an entire month. They'll appear in the Question of the Week, Best Battles, Best Covers, Must Read Stories, Weekly Battles, and potentially more. How is the character or team picked, you ask? GREAT QUESTION! Have a cookie or snack of your choice later on for such a fantastic question. Anyway, before the 1st week of the month, we'll post a poll with a specific theme and several options. For example, the latest one was "anti-heroes" and Moon Knight won after a week of voting. Now, once a character wins, they will not appear on the poll again (unless they happen to be part of a team). And if a character loses or a theme you like is used, don't worry because losing characters can appear multiple times and so can themes... just not two months in a row. There needs to be a bit of space before that happens again. For example, we could see an "anti-heroes" theme in 2-3 months.

So, what's the point of this thread? Well, it's so you can provide feedback! Is there a theme you want to see? A specific character you want on the poll? Do you want to make suggestions for their weekly battles or even propose a new article idea for the winners? This is where you can chime in and we'll take it into consideration.

I'd suggest going with sorcerers, mystics, magicians, and exorcists. If it hasn't already been done...

Try to make it nothing but independently published/non mainstream characters; Hunter Rose, Spawn, Luther Strode, Witchblade(Sara Pezinni) Invincible, Savage Dragon, Hellboy and X-O Manowar.

That'll definitely happen sooner or later. The trick is making sure each character can be properly used for all of the segments.

Currently thinking about next month's theme. Feel free to speak up. Also, will reduce options from 10 back down to 5. Hopefully that makes for closer races and doesn't use up so many characters so soon.

Voting for a new CoTM will go live Monday morning, so be sure to check the homepage!

Cerebral villains could be fun. Guys like Riddler, Joker, Loki, etc...although I don't know how those would play out for the Battle of the Week scenarios since they aren't exactly combat oriented most of the time.

Deathstroke is the latest winner. Feel free to make suggestions for his month in here. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this thread.

Just a reminder that Slade's must read stories and best battles are around the corner. Feel free to make suggestions if there's something you really want to see included.

This is a really cool idea for character spotlights. If I might make a suggestion, when announcing the winner you might include a link to any respect threads for that character on the sight, to help us comic book noobs understand a bit more about the character :)

@spitfirepanda: Thanks. Whenever the character's name is first used in the article, you can click it and that'll take you to their info page in the CV database.

I've really been enjoying these character of the months so far. I reckon next character should be Batman.

Well, maybe the theme could be "Favorite Justice League Character"...

For next month, I'd like to see a swordsman theme:

Black Knight, Blade, Silver Samurai, Ra's Al Ghul, Conan, Taskmaster, Ninjak, etc...

I also think a marksman theme would be rad, too:

Punisher, Bullseye, Green Arrow, Deadshot, etc... (I can't think of any other characters, ATM)

I'm definitely missing a few characters for each category, though.

Why not a theme of characters who have set themselves outside of their progenitor's shadow, and established entirely independent Identities? Of course, the title might have to be tweaked for thread purposes :P

Characters like Nightwing, X-23, Winter Soldier, War Machine, Arsenal, Rose Ravager, Kyle Rayner, etc?

How about a Cosmic/Space Character theme? Characters like Silver Surfer, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy (as much as I don't like them), Thanos, Green Lantern, etc. could be included.

I would like to see any of the following.

1. William Hand
2. Apocalypse
3. Annihilus
4. Nova
5. Hal Jordan

Cosmic theme will definitely be used at some point!

How about the cosmic theme for next month since Guardians of the Galaxy is coming out August 1?

Since GOTG is coming out we could vote for favorite teams: Avengers, Justice League, Fantastic Four...Guardians of the Galaxy (clear winner, no I'm not biased!). Or some more cosmic characters like Nova, some of the Guardians members like Star Lord and Rocket Raccoon, or Green Lantern (or any Lantern really).

I vote the same. Ghost Rider, Doctor Fate, Dead Man, Phantom Stranger, etc...

Maybe some lower street level or sidekicks?

We've just had several Street level characters of the month for a good couple months in a row. Personally I'd be more inclined towards mid tier, powerhouse or even cosmic characters for a change. Though I know Gregg tends not to use them because of the difficulty in balancing a fair fight amongst powerful characters.

@lvenger: Yeah, it was just a suggestion. Lower powered characters in general would be interesting. Richard Rider vs some characters he doesn't get crushed by would be cool.

Richard Rider sounds like quite a good suggestion. Popular with the fans, an interesting character and powerful but not too overpowered.

Green Arrow's the latest winner and we posted his Best Covers. Next we'll get to Best Battles and Must Read Stories, so if there's something you REALLY think should be in those articles, throw the suggestions our way and we'll take them into consideration.

We had him in the anti-hero theme -- the one Moon Knight won -- but I'll keep him in mind for future themes.

@xwraith: I dont think GL/GA are as dated as a lot of comics from that era. That series was so far ahead of it's time the themes hold up surprisingly well. Good list though. If you get a chance checkout Green Arrow: The Wonder Year (Longbow Hunters prequel). I bought that and the Shado prestige format mini earlier this year.

It's a good idea, I just don't know if something that time consuming is actually doable considering all of the other assignments. S1-2 are on Netflix, though...

And don't worry, all of those are on the list :)

and pre-52 would be Ollie vs Onomatopoeia in sounds of violence after Connors surgery

Damian Wayne, a.k.a. Robin, is the latest Character of the Month! Obvious battle choices are Hulk, Thor, and Doctor Strange.

After he gains his powers he will beat the three at the same time.

I think that should you do a battle with old Damian as Batman (He appeared in Batman 666, 700, Batman inc 5 and the 4 issues of Damian son of batman). I am gonna detail a little bit his capabilities to see what you think. His suit is bulletproof, fireproof and laser proof. he has a crazy healing factor and he has tons of pain tolerance. With the batrope he pulled a gigantic machine (that was fixed to the ground), he sent flying a Gorilla with a punch and he easily overpowered Jackanapes (a Gorilla trained by the Joker). For speed he blocked bullets that were shoot at him and he acrobatically punched a gorilla before it could shot him with a gun. For durability he withstood the bite of a Gorilla in the neck, he got punched through column of wood (by a Gorilla). I have scans to back this up.

Red Hood is long overdue.

Maybe a clone theme? EX: Ben Reilly. Or an alternate universe theme, EX: Prometheus. A replacement/alternate/similar theme could also be interesting, EX: Toxin, Azrael, Daken, etc...

John Stewart is the latest CotM. Make suggestions here (e.g. battles, covers, ideas, etc).
