His parents were poor Irish immigrants, they died when he was a teenager. He then went to war and saw all sorts of horrific violence. He saw a lot of his friends die in front of him, including his best friend Bucky who was like a brother to him. Finally, he got frozen and woke up to find that everyone he knew before was dead except for his girlfriend who is so old she barely remembers him.

I know Bruce was only a child when he saw his parents die and that it was a very tragic and scaring event, but I don't think he's as tragic a character as Steve. He was raised in luxury by Alfred, who was like a father to him. I can understand him being a vigilante but he's far too dark and brooding for me to take him seriously. If the darkness and rage was just part of his super persona I'd accept it.

I agree. I also think that a lot of heroes have a more tragic background than Batman. It seems like 80% of heroes have parents that died when they were young. Batman's origin is just the most famous and factors into his persona a lot more than other characters.

Sure, let's fully explain in detail Cap's background and summarize Batman's to, "saw his parents die, and then raised into luxury".

Widening Gyre, anyone?

Knightfall?

Silver St. Cloud? Tommy Elliot? Damian Wayne? Jason Todd?

How about Superman/Batman: Absolute Power?

@racob7: you forgot the rule. you can't announce that a Marvel Character has more anything than DC , whether its abilities , power, or tragic backstories.

Superheroes and tragic backstories go together like peanut butter and jelly. Because apparently you can only want to do good if your life has been sh*t and not just be born nice. Except Superman. Usually.

It's different when your parents get killed right in front of you though.

There is a difference between parents normally dying and parentes getting shot in front of your face when you were 8.

I really don't like that the Joker may have played a part in what happened to Jason throughout his life. Him killing him should have been enough, but for him to lead the events that would get there....it's just ughhhhhhh.

having your kid murdered is a lot worst than you parents dying. No parent should have to bury their children. Bruce buried two. that should take the cake right there. but it keeps going, his love st cloud dying, parents dying, etc... and combine all the tragdies with tht fact tht you know youre sooo insane you'll never be able to settle down and have a relationship. Cap has/is in a healthy relationship (unno if still is dont read him anymore).

wolverine beats out both though

as far as I'm concerned J'onn J'onzz has the most tragic story, but he's not human so it doesn't count

I mostly agree with this. Though they've both been through a lot, and not to say Steve wouldn't have seen some horrific stuff in WWII - I think that what Batman has been through has been a whole lot more personal.

That being said, I have more respect for Rogers. With all the stuff he's been through he still found the strength to "soldier on" on without going around brooding all the time.

@koshi_waza88: Good point. Though I don't think this is based on who was more traumatized by what happened in their lives, but who's life we think has been more tragic.

I think we can all agree that Batman took his tragedy harder, though - dressing up like a bat, and all.

Origin Wise. Steve had it hard but there life as a Hero Bruce has him beat. But honestly Roy Harper and Spider-man both have more sh*t lives then those two.

Yeah. He may be minor but his life is a key example of how much a comic book characters life can just down right go to hell.

Well, I don't think anyone is saying Batman has the most tragic history, tons of heroes have a sadder story than him, but the tragedy was enough to make him into what he is.
