Can almost any super power be OP?

I was thinking today about flash and how OP he is according to calculations and other viners. And I thought "wow super speed is so broken, but it doesnt seem like it would be". Then I thought, almost any power could be broken if you power it up enough.

Example

What if someone had superhuman strength. No, not superhuman strength as low as Silver Age Superman but wayyyyyy above that. Im talking what if someone was so strong that they could do thunderclaps that destroyed planets or even universes.

Shape shifting: What if someone could use shape shifting to grow to the size of 3x the universe and destroy it because they were too large.

Anyone else have any ideas of any powers that could be made to be incredibly OP? Or just want to share their thoughts about the thread.

yae too an extent any power could be op. But not every op power can defeat every character. The best op power is reality manipulation. Since you can have any op power you can think of.

To address this topic:

Super speed is broken because speed is a driving force in physics and often times counts for more than actual mass or strength. It's also more useful most of the time.

Obviously super strength on obscene levels is OP, but shapeshifting is also one of those things that can be extremely OP but most people don't realize how broken it actually is. In the lore for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering, the original version of their (now) penultimate beings, the planeswalkers, could shapeshift. However, their shapeshifting wasn't any of that weak-***, "I can become a tiger!! LOLZORS!!" type shapeshifting. The shapeshifting was activated by their "spark" and could be controlled freely. This effectively made the planeswalkers ageless beings with ungodly healing factors.

Lose an arm? No problem, shapeshift that bad boy back on. Lose a body? Same deal. Need a weapon? time to just shapeshift into a huge dragon/world ending engine of destruction. Shapeshifting is actually absurdly strong, just straight up.

To add another one, energy absorbtion/dispersion. Energy absorption/dispersion, if left completely unchecked and with no balance, means that you would easily achieve the ranks of the gods. First and foremost, basically everything in the universe runs on energy. You wanna move forward? Kinetic energy. You know that thing that allows you to see? Light? Yea, that's absorbed, i.e. you're blind/I'm invisible. And it just gets so much worse from there. Breathing? Requires functioning kinetic energy and burning energy in your body to work properly. Blood flow? not a chance.

Speed stealing should actually be among the most lethal, absolutely balance breaking skills out there, even more so than it is right now. Even the very capacity you have to feel heat is nullified since heat is, once again, just energy. Energy manipulations means you can leave people trapped motionless in a world of eternal cold and darkness. If you really pushed it, you could very well steal the impulses from their very minds, rendering them incapable of thought.

Good points.

I was also thinking about teleportation.

A while back I finished a manga called Medaka Box and it was a character named Kumagawa. He had the ability to make anything "become nothing" the power already seemed broken but the ways he used it were beyond creative and broken. He made his attack time become nothing, other people hopes and dreams become nothing, colors become nothing, thoughts become nothing(could make people brain dead), memories, emotions, etc.

Then I thought teleportation, what if someone did this with teleportation, not only able to be able to teleport the physical but the metaphysical as well. For example what if there was a character who could teleport superman's powers to flash. Or teleport superman's weakness to kryptonite to oblivion. What if someone could teleport there limitations away to oblivion so that they could accomplish any feat they wished. They could teleport someone else's thoughts into their brain constantly resulting in mind reading.

yes it can be but it'll never be fixed. it all needs to be scaled down. Mr. Incredible strength should be our heroes strength. Enough to to take on a bomb but not enough that makes showings entirely to abstract to write about.

the fact that their is both DC and Marvel that'll never happen. Unless they both scale down neither would. Superman has to be able to take on whatever version of the Hulk is present. It would make for better stories in the absolute Golden Age of artist.

Lex Luthor proves that a high enough level of intelligence can be overpowering.

The Joker (Emperor Joker, anyone?) proves that a high enough level of mental problems can be overpowering.

Reggie van Dough and Mayda Munny (enemies of Richie Rich) prove that a high enough level of money can be overpowering. (As do the Koch brothers?)

Not EVERY power but a lot of em. Take Arm fall off lad or whatever his name is, I dont think there is a way to make that power OP lol

I like to think that any power can be extremely useful rather than OP. There's always at least one circumstance in which even the stupidest of powers could come in handy.

I think we have seen enough evidence that indicates 'yes'... ANY power can become over powered. Case in point: Squirrel summoning & control. (lol)

you could make it op, but then you would just be reaching, like what if his power wasnt just "removing his arms" what if this whole time his power was breaking down his body into smaller and smaller pieces, like sandman, but because he was so stupid he didn't expand on his powers and stopped at just removing his arms.

lol

The end

what a crappy power though for real. Never heard of that guy until now just googled him.

@squares: His power's super useful. He can get rid of literally anything by eating it, and it won't hurt him. Great for disposing of stuff like bombs, random obstructions, and robots.

I've always wanted to play a video game where you get some power that looks absolutely useless on the surface (talking to fish, making your arm fall off), and through creative manipulation used that one sh*tty power to take over the world. I think every power has the potential to be deadly, or at least useful, through clever enough use.

Then again some people just want to take powers to the logical extreme. Take Cypher, a mutant from Marvel who's only power was to understand languages. Eventually, Marvel writers took this to mean coding languages, making him some kind of super hacker, body languages, making him a master martial artist, etc. He was even able to spot a building's architectural weaknesses because... architecture language? I guess? He was a pretty stupid character.

what a crappy power though for real. Never heard of that guy until now just googled him.

But then at that point you are actually changing what the base part of his power is, just being able to remove his arm. With the examples of super strength and super speed they are still super strength and super speed just OP. What you say makes it seems like his power would evolve into something different.

I found out about him through a "ten worst super powers list"

Are . . .

Are you kidding?

One hundred punches in the span of a second. Running at the speed of sound PAST SOMEONE and letting them get the sonic boom. Brushing bullets out of the air like confetti, breaking into secure facilities and busting out your terrorist dad, Charging up the super-punches to hit people at a speed approaching near light speed (thus you have infinitely increasing mass the closer you approach)

Super speed isn't OP at all unless it comes with Super durability. Good luck on your legs not turning into red jelly and your body not being burned away by friction, not to mention having your internal organs rearranged by G forces running anywhere near the speed of sound, forget light speed.

It's hilarious that people use Flash(and the argument of his fanboys) as an example of why Super Speed is overpowered. The vast majority of the arguments from his fanboys, and the primary reason that Flash wins the majority of the fights he does, is not actually because of Super Speed, but because of his ability to manipulate the Speed Force.

But yes, most super powers can be overpowered. And similarly, even relatively low level powers, can be obscenely powerful and effective once you actually start thinking about it. It depends on the versatility of the power, the more versatile, the less raw power it needs, to be overpowered.

Exactly, so subject to real world physics, a lot of classic OPed powers aren't OPed at all.

Instead of flash lets use zoom then. His only power is basically super speed and isnt connected to the speed force and he wrecks people like supes and WW.
