Hey I have been wanting to get into this era of spiderman but I want to find the best way to read the 70's and 80's in trades chronologically. I know the essentials books are a good starting place but what about some story's being in trades that are not black and white.

Your next best option is to subscribe to Marvel Unlimited unless you are totally against the idea of digital comics. I'll have you know that MU has saved me a ton of freaking money on comics. It's almost like the Netflix of comics. I can't guarantee that it has all the comics you're looking for--in fact, it most likely won't--so check the website and see if the comics you want to read are there. If they aren't there, try ComiXology--that has a good selection as well. Another option is to just pick a few stories that you're interested in from that era and find the trades for them.

All at once in a public library, and tipsy if at all possible.

Ah, good memories.
