What makes a good superhero name? Is it a snappy adjective or a military rank? Does it have to be one really good, self- explanitory word or something entirely made up? Are new ones better or should names be recycled? Does the name make the hero?

Self explanitory helps. Spider Man, Batman, Superman. It makes you feel like you can just pick up a comic and get the premise without needing too much backstory. Kind of like having a premise synopsis in the opening of a show.

Simplicity counts.

for example, The Punisher. It's straight to the point.

The worst kind of names are the ones with "Watch", "Justice", "Steel", or "Hawk".... imo.

As for the best, its this.

@LightBright: Superman. It's pretty much self-explanatory. All the other superheroes didn't use it because everybody came after him.

The name must have some relation with the hero, not something irrelevant.

I think the best ones are the ones that sound just cool and don't have "Man" with them.

  • Daredevil - Works with his look and is already established in our head what the word means.
  • Cyclops - Because of the myths of the creature
  • Black Bolt - Just sounds cool.
