Usually this feature has a variety of publishers or it's even dominated by one of the Big Two, but this week there's zero battles from DC and Marvel in the spotlight. That's right, you won't see any Deadpool, Batman or Wolverine this week, Viners. Instead, I've got scans of the Ninja Turtles in action, a gory encounter from INVINCIBLE, and a fun fight from FIVE WEAPONS. Enjoy!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vs. Awesome Clown Dude (TMNT #21)
Returning from their battle with General Krang in Dimension X, the Turtles continue their training across the rooftops of New York. However, nothing could prepare them for this attacker. Rocking a mask, impressive skill and even more impressive taunts, this unidentified figure promptly embarrasses the heroes in a half shell.
A few swift moves later and the assailant heads for the hills. The Turtles pursue the formidable foe and when they finally spot him, Raphael does exactly what they'd expect him to do: rush into battle like a mad man. As you may have guessed, the encounter doesn't go any better for them and the character teaches them yet another lesson in combat.
As if two rounds of being stomped wasn't enough for the team, they go at it with this dude a third time. Sure, it's in the sewers so they technically have home field advantage, but it doesn't make a difference at all. The outcome is the same as before, but this time the fiend leaves with a threat: he's going after Master Splinter. The team rushes after him and gets into a fourth battle. Go on, guess how it goes. If you guessed," they get whooped again," then you're right!
While this character does indeed put a beating on them, one character does manage to turn the tide and there's a big reveal shortly after. Purchase the issue to get all of the details, friends!
Omni-Man vs. Grand Regent Thragg (INVINCIBLE #103)
"Absolute power corrupts absolutely." Despite not posing an immediate threat or desire to usurp him, Thragg's determined to hold onto power and this made him believe the only way to do so is to kill Nolan Grayson. The fact Deborah was in the way was completely irrelevant to Thragg, and clashing with Omni-Man almost took her life as she was exposed to the harsh conditions of space. However, in spite of being outclassed in this battle, Nolan manages to throw her into an emergency air lock before the door slams shut (it's a really cool scene, but I limit each feature to 3 scans). His wife's worries are now over, but his have only just begun.
What comes next is an absolutely brutal and bloody brawl. The art team (John Rauch, Ryan Ottley & Cliff Rathburn) does a superb job making us feel every vicious and blood-spewing strike. It's a hugely impressive feat on their behalf, providing gorgeous animated motion, a beautifully unique style, and a few totally cringeworthy strikes.
I just can't get over that one punch in the above scan -- it knocked Omni-Man's freaking eye out and the fight still continues. As you can see below, having your eye drift away in a sea of chunky tomato sauce won't deter Nolan's will to love and overcome. From there, it all goes downhill for Thragg.
Seeing as I don't want to spoil the comic and you should support what you love, I refuse to reveal how Omni-Man manages to turn the tide. If you want to know how it concludes and what developments stem from the melee, go buy it!
"Tyler" vs. Rick the Stick (FIVE WEAPONS #3)
The Shainline name is one to be feared and will send a chill down anyone's spine. But Rick the Stick? He simply cannot wait to get a piece of "Tyler." The new student dances around the club President's attacks at first, but there's a problem here: he needs to knock Rick out of the ring using a weapon... and seeing as our hero refuses to wield weapons, that can be a bit problematic.
"Tyler's" certainly bright and skilled, but he can't evade Rick forever. I mean, we're talking about a kid who's known as a buddy in a school full of formidable assassins-to-be. We've still got no idea what the brilliant protagonist has up his sleeve, and in the meantime, the poor kid takes a few tough hits from the melee weapon. Youch.
As usual, "Tyler" executes his master plan and takes advantage of Rick's weakness -- and we still have no idea what it is. Apparently blinded, the bully wildly flails his staff around to no avail. While our main character (can you tell I'm reaaaaaally trying to avoid his name for the new readers out there?) refuses to equip a weapon, it doesn't mean he's not allowed to use Rick's weapon against him. With just one finger, he manages to crush Rick's ego.
You really don't think I'll reveal how he turns the tide of the challenge, do you? Of course not! Go buy the comic, silly.
