Best Comic Covers of the Week: 2/9/12

Each week we sort out through all the new releases and choose some of our favorite comic book covers. This week we have plenty of cool covers to choose from, so let's not waste any more time. As usual, if there is a cover that you loved that we missed feel free to add it to the comments below.

First up is the cover to DAREDEVIL END OF DAYS #5 by artist Alex Maleev. If there were ever a cover that totally encompassed the sheer hopelessness of a story, this would be it. Filled to the brim with raw emotion, pain, agony and hopelessness, this image is beautifully illustrated and completely reflects the story inside.

Next is Dave Stevens' cover to DAVE STEVENS' ROCKETEER ARTIST'S EDITION. We don't normally put covers to collected editions on our list, but we really had to make an exception this week when we saw this. Sometimes things are just better in black and white.

MULTIPLE WARHEADS is a series drawn and written by comic creator Brandon Graham and published by Image. Graham's pencils are a bit shaky but the cover to issue #4 is really detailed and very beautiful. The choice for colors is fantastic.

This week's cover to ALL-NEW X-MEN#7 by Stuart Immonen is beautiful, but it's mostly because of the cover's amazing colors. There is a tremendous amount of depth to the cover's colors and the way the artist plays with light and shadow for emphasis is fantastic.

And while colors can be what makes a cover, sometimes it's the shadows of black, white and grey that makes it work. Jock's wrap around cover for the new Image series titled SNAPSHOT is really pretty. Using only black ink for emphasis, Jock knocks it completely out of he park.

Artist Mitch Breitweiser's cover to PLANET OF THE APES CATACLYSM #6 is all about perspective. The image is beautiful, detailed and a unique cover that is sure to grab any reader. Breitweiser's classic style shines.

@Icarusflies: Well like I've said I gotta read something DC that's not Batman and it does seem like the kind of thing I'd like.

Not one of the "best" but I like it, probably because it's nice and symmetrical :)

Arrow ads ruin all DC covers this month. I'm not surprised they weren't mentioned.

All due respect to the artists for sharing their talent - but I could not be any more bored with these. The Rocketeer comes close - but there's too much surrounding the focal point and it makes the overall feeling too busy. If it were just his silhouette it would be very dramatic.

I might suggest that Phantom Stranger as a nominee, along with Road to Oz # 5 however unfortunately (MESSAGE!) most of the more compelling covers are...wait for it...variants. Ah well.

Good Covers

My favorite would be the black and white variant of Green Arrow 17:

The Dial H cover is brilliant and definitely missing in the mix. 
The Phantom Stranger reminds me of Colder #1 and looks pretty nice, too, ...and painful. Love it!

The Phantom Stranger cover this week was pretty intriguing.

Man, all the covers posted in the thread are incredible! Have to mention, though, how sad it is Dave Stevens is no longer alive but his work will always live on. His cover here proves how incredibly talented the man was. His art has been a huge inspiration to me personally.

I really dig that Shadowman cover. Whoa.

I was quite surprised that this didn't make the list. When i saw this cover earlier this week, i was convinced it was going to make the list.

surprised this didn't get a mention,( Crow Skinning the wolves #3) its bleak and awesome

awww no love for Manara :(

I just love the little details like the boots and helmet and the background is incredible.

This is currently my favorite feature on this site. I'd love to see the number of covers doubled, plus a nomination for worst cover as well. It's a special skill to have good design sense, but also to summarise a story.

That Planet of the Apes one was pretty cool.

Same with the Shadowman variant.

They're all cool though.

That All-New X-Men title is pretty sweet, but yeah the artist's edition of Rocketeer #1 definitely wins it for me :)
