@nickras: Guy Gardner is a absolute amazing character and by far my favourite lantern but he is no culture icon like batman
Not even close. I think you mean Spider-Man.

I personally find Jack Hawksmoor to be a better character and I like Daredevil more as a masked martial artist city protector kind of guy. Batman is certainly in my top ten, though. He's objectively one of the greatest but there isn't any objective means by which you can unequivocally say he is, bar none, the greatest. This thread is just begging for a flame war/rustled-jimmies-passive aggresive-condescension-fest
There is no doubt that he is one of the greatest, has great villains and is one of the most developed characters. But greatest? Idk
Each character is a different concept.
Exactly. Batman is one of many cool concepts, though he has been more thoroughly explored than most, if not all, in comics. It helps that he's flexible, but this says more about a general lack of imagination and the rigidity of comics medium then it does about the deficiencies of other characters.

Unfortunately this general lack of imagination and rigidity is because it's a world run by money.

True. Specifically, I think what Marvel and DC produce is overvalued because of artificial scarcity created by the recognition of 'intellectual property.' The companies claim ownership to the concepts themselves instead of what they actually do with them, which I believe is unjust and causes complacency. Goods can change hands and be owned, sure, but ideas belong to everyone (though the originator deserves reward proportional to the merit of the idea).
Yes IMO...but also this guy...
