It occurred to me that the general Batman Story goes like this. Batman finds big bad guy.... gets beat bloody by big bad guy.... then after much healing comes back to beat big bad guy.. Moral of the story.... Batman may win in the end, but he gets beat badly at some point. He always gets beat badly.

Is this statement true or false.

That's the most basic of basic 3-act structure storytelling. You could apply that to any most any fiction (may not be a physical beating, but act 2 should end with a downer)

@dbatdog: I know sometimes he actually comes across a crime, analyzes the clues, tracks down a suspect and brings him in.... you know.... actually being a detective. Whenever he comes up against skilled criminals or those with superpowers it seems like he get's his ##$ handed to him unless he's got prep. The logic follows that in most fights where it's Batman V Whoever where Batman doesn't have prep, Wayne should be screwed by far the majority of the time.

Not sure which books you've read that involves him getting beat in the first encounter, but those are pretty rare moments. Batman actually does really well without prep, and at worst, he just fails to capture the mysterious new villain in their first meeting. One time he got impaled through the gut with a wooden stick, and he still ended up winning that fight.

Batman is great at what he does. He's more than just a fighting force and he is only human after all. If he could walk up to people like bane and kick their ass in the first encounter what would be the point? I think it's fun reading Batman and seeing him in a tough encounter, I like how he has to use everything in his arsenal to come out alive as opposed to a super powered being just smashing their way out of a situation.

@schillenger420:

I'm still pretty new to Batman comics, but who does that not happen to? Spider-Man for instance - that's how almost every one of his comics go.

Like @rdclip said, that's one of the most basic structures of storytelling, and it's done that way because it works. Think of how boring it would be if the hero was never beaten in one way of another. That's why so many misinformed people dislike Superman - they think he never gets beaten, even though that's rarely the case.

If the menace isn't challenging to the point of testing the hero's limits, the story falls flat. That's basic storytelling. For a superhero, that often means taking a beating, and in some cases losing something or someone they care about.

That is an absolutely FALSE statement!! Batman doesn't always get his butt kicked. The Joker kicks him in various places.

  • Kicks in the head.

  • Kicks his feet, tripping him

  • Kicks in the gut.

Batman always comes back bigger and better when he faces the first battle. It's classic superhero storytelling or storytelling in general.

As others have said, that's how Snyder structures every single story, but it's by no means a rule of thumb for Batman as a whole. Honestly, I love Snyder on everything else he writes, but I can't wait for him to get off of Batman. His run is basically Fanfiction and this point

Why does everyone want this dude to win every fight?? If that was the case most of his stories would be filled with filler until he fights the villain and win.
