i was looking for a comic to try out that starred a gay hero other than Midnighter. They dont have to be marvel/dc either they can be from an indie comic but it needs to be action packed and well written

also non stereotypical so like no evil murderers or moral less characters and if he is feminine id rather it not be used a a joke

These are the only ones I can think of that can be considered action packed:

Chew(John Colby, Director Applebee)

The Walking Dead(Jesus, Aaron, Eric)

Buffy(Willow, Andrew, Kennedy)

X-Factor(Rictor, Shatterstar)

Astonishing X-Men(Northstar, Kyle, Karma)

Daken

Young Avengers(Hulking, Wiccan)

I don't count him, since his boyfriend spent almost the entire series dead.

Yup definitely New 52 Alan Scott. When I heard the announcement that GL was gay, like most people I first though of Hal Jordan, whose been with loads of women. Then when I found out it was a reboot of Alan Scott on a parallel Earth, I thought that the character would just be some kind of token character. The truth is that he's a great character, and the closest thing to a leader in a world without the 'trinity'. He's written well in the sense that although his sexuality is a fundamental part of his character, that is only one layer. The character has faced a wide range of circumstances and has been shown as one of the most integral characters in his respective universe.

But they only bring up the fact that he's gay, like twice in the whole series. Its really more of an informed character trait.

New-52 Alan Scott and Apollo standout. And I'm sorry but I have to mention Midnighter. He's not a stereotype for being gay either nor does he give gay people a bad name IMO. He's just a hyper-violent, savage, highly intelligent killing machine...........who just so happens to be gay :)

Isn't that fine though. They aren't shoving his sexual preference in our faces though, and when it came down to it and his dead lover turned out to be "alive" but still dead in a sense, it broke his heart even more and had to give him up all over again.

That's better to me then, being flamboyantly gay and showing off how gay they are by making out in every issue or something like that....

I have friends that are gay, that are single, the only reason I know they are gay or that anyone would know is because they were told at some point.... just like in this case

@willienotwilliam: Captain Jack, but you have to watch Doctor Who(The Newest Series) from season 1 to understand the character. Torchwood on Netflix and Doctor Who are both on netflix and there is the comics as well.

@lukehero: He's still a very good example of a non-token LGBT character and his sexuality isn't just "tacked on", it's an important part of his character.

Actually, his boyfriend becomes a part of Alan Scott, and frequently comes out and helps him. They interact a lot and kiss and hug several times throughout Earth-2 and Earth-2 end. It was because of Sam, that Alan was able to tap into the multi-Earth potentially and knock out Darkseid.

Do people care about Iceman that much? He never seems to be as involved or popular as Cyclops, Jean Grey, or Wolverine.

Obsidian was handled really well. though he wasn't full blown gay until after he stopped being the star of a comic(he lost his powers, not because he was gay). He was evil for awhile, but that was due to his powers and being manipulated.

They specifically wrote him as a feminine gay character, who's "one of the girls". They're going for an unashamed feminine gay guy without any angst. I would prefer someone a little feminine like Wiccan (hence one of his favorite musicals is "The Sound of Music") if that's the direction they're going for instead of going in with a stereotypical character in mind.

So you don't think it counts because like real life gay people it doesn't completely define everything about who he is?

Ir you find any, let me know. Comic book writers don't seem to know how to write convincing and interesting non-heteronormative characters. And gay males are hardly the most well-represented bunch in comics. You'll have a less trouble finding lesbian characters, but comic book writers tend to just write them all as femme fatales without many real-world qualities.

Bunker "one of the girls"? He's bros with Beast Boy.

Bunker is great, I expected to hate the character for taking the place of a classic team member for the sake of meeting a political correctness quota but honestly he's grown on me, I think he fits into the group well and I find him a likeable nice guy character with a good sense of humour. Snappy dresser too.

Note: I am talking post-Lobdell. I've blocked that run from my memory.

hmm i never looked at him like that. interesting point of view.

to me he just seems happy go lucky and enthusiastic. He isn't super flamboyant or anything he just is a really nice guy. I do see where you are coming from though..but nothing really stood out to me.

This to me is his character in a nutshell:

That just means his sexuality is not the focus of the series. He's still gay. He's arguably the best written gay character because they put as much focus on his romantic relationships as any other character. In my opinion, it implies that his sexuality is normal.

@username12345: there is a long standing stereotype of gay people being amoral sociopaths

Joker is straight, Bane is straight, Ra's al Guhl is straight, heck most of Batmans rouges gallery are straight sociopaths. I'd go as far to say most villains are straight even.

and/or racist and even if there werent a stereotype of it,

Oh man, since when?

i dont like evil characters for the most part

Well fair enough. I was just curious, considering bad guys can be just as cool as good guys.
