Superhero costumes aren't what they use to be.There was a lot of spandex with undies and bright and colorful.Now I look at Today's costumes and there mostly just clothing,uniforms, and armor.Are Spandex lame now?Even Superman doesn't wear it anymore.He wears weird alien armor and at one point, he went around saving the city in jeans and t-shirt. Were spandex ever cool in the first place?
I think as the superhero genre grows and matures there is a bigger push for more realism. Hence the armor or in some cases no costume at all. I still love most of the classic spandex looks though. Practical or not.

it doesn't look skintight to me, just not overtly bulky. most of it is body armor with few exceptions such as Deadman.
I think it still fits on some characters. I can't see The Flash wearing anything but Yellow boots and red tights. It can look cool on some but yes, foolish on others.

It really depends on the characters, their abilities and the way they look. For some the spandex works pretty well. For others, a more armor-like costume or something more military like is a far better choice.

@moywar700: Think about the Alex Ross artwork you used. Alex Ross wants his superheroes to look realistic and that means using real dress outfits so he usually uses Spandex.
i think the getting rid of spandex and underwear over pants is long overdue, it always looked tacky imo and was more of a 40's 50's thing the modern costumes are a lot cleaner and it makes more sense to fight in light armor than spandex, especially for the heroes without powers
I think I noticed that it works better in old comics than new ones, for stylistical reasons. So the outfits were due for a change. I say this because when I see old Superman or Jimmy Olsen covers (thank you Jimmy's Life Sucks thread), it doesn't look as strange.
p.s. another observation about spandex.. it looks worse in real life than in comics. In comics the characters show a lot of definition in their body, their muscles and whatnot. But spandex covers all that.
also I think I noticed that comics do things that would never work in real life, starting with the outfits but also the action poses and the battles. The idea of superheroes fighting at all is pretty unrealistic since in real life the battles would probably last seconds, have grisly results and wouldn't appear nearly as dramatic as they do in comics. And more characters would use guns, even if they have superpowers. It's also seemingly unlikely to me that superheroes wouldn't kill bystanders purely by accident.
as for the True Heroes pic posted above, it makes me a little sad. What is Robin without a cape or wings. Why even wear costumes at this point. Funny thing about Robin. In that pic it's not clear whether he's a superhero with a modern costume, or just someone trying to look cool.
So I think Spandex are going to be a thing in the past.Nobody in the Young Justice cartoon dresses up like this except for a few characters.
