"Internationally acclaimed writer Alan Moore renamed a road Double Cross Street in a deprived area of his hometown Northampton to highlight the treatment of local residents.

Alan, who is suffering from flu, raised himself from his sick bed to perform the spoof road naming ceremony in which Lower Cross Street in Spring Boroughs was renamed Double Cross Street.

The protest comes nearly a year after council tenants were moved out of homes for refurbishment they were told would take just 16 weeks.

Campaigners believe the homes will be bulldozed and replaced with more upmarket properties beyond the reach of residents who have lived in the area for decades.

In a speech, the full video of which will be appearing on our website, Alan describes the developments taking place in the Boroughs - his childhood home - as "class cleansing".

"They have been abusing this area for 100 years," he added.

He reiterated calls for a proficiency test for elected officials.

"If we do our jobs badly, we don't take an entire community down the toilet," he said.

Tony Clarke, who also spoke to the crowd, pointed out the street corners within sight where there used to be pubs, shops and a housing office which have now been closed and replaced with new housing developments.

"It's not about the buildings it's about the community," he said."
