20. Mystiq

Mystiq joined the Exiles pretty sharply when Chris Claremont took over reigns of the book. Sabretooth saved him from an assault and after that Mystiq was apparently a fully-fledged member of the Exiles. Which means they have an easier recruitment drive than the Avengers. In fact his joining of the team was so poorly written, it wasn't even clear he was a member until the relaunch as New Exiles. He was basically just Mystiquebut as a man. Worth noting is he had a child with Destiny which was the original idea behind Nightcrawler's origin. Other than that though, the character was dull with a capital everything. Claremont must've thought having a character dress in a quirky anachronistic style would've been enough to win him over some sort of Doctor Who-style fandom. It wasn't. End of the day, the character just wasn't interesting and Claremont replacing most of the core team for guys like this is what led to the death of the series.

19. Thunderbird

Thunderbird was one of the founding members of the Exiles and a former Horseman of all-around bastard Apocalypse. Despite that, the character never received much development in his short tenure with the team. Much like in X-Men, he was one of the earliest casualties among the team as he was made brain-dead in a battle with Galactus and left behind within the first 10 issues. He was later magically healed of his problem towards the end of the title under the hand of Chris Claremont. The character's most defining trait was probably hooking up with Nocturne and making her angsty for a long-time following his placement into a coma. Also, the fact he was butt ugly.

18. Spider-Man 2099

Spider-Man of the year 2099 was Miguel o'Hara an employee of Alchemax. He was created in the mid-90s by X-Factor scribe Peter David and fell into major disuse after Terry Kavanagh took up the reigns following David's departure and he was quick to kill off the majority of Miguel's supporting cast in a flood and then making the character a God who was able to lift Mjolnir. Thankfully, the Spider-Man 2099 featured in Exiles is from a time before Kavanagh's hideous decisions. A few extra powers aside (talons, anyone?), Miguel shared most of the powerset of the original Spider-Man. He joined the Exiles while the team were searching for Proteus across various dimensions. He stayed with them until the end of the original series but he didn't get all that much to do. The only real headlining moment he got being the incredibly tedious and ham-fisted "Death of Gwen Stacy" storyline he was put through in one of Claremont's earliest Exiles issues. An issue or two later, he was phased out of the book and given a moderately happy ending where he decided to live his life out in a reality with Mary Jane. I've always believed that Claremont wasn't aware that Spider-Man 2099 isn't an alternate reality Peter Parker.

17. Namora

Namora was Namor but as a blue woman. Simple as that. The confusing thing being there was already a character called Namora. Ignoring that awkward fact, she joined the Exiles between battles with Hyperion and was quick to start agitating both the team and the readers with her snobby royal Atlantean schtick. Despite that, much like Namor, she did present herself as both a noble and capable team-mate from time to time. However, she always returned to her rather unpleasant attitude which largely overshadowed any development made with the character. She eventually died in battle with King Hyperion, quite nobly, fighting the much stronger foe one-on-one.

16. Cat

There's not a lot to say about the version of Kitty Pryde featured in Exiles. She was another of Claremont's additions to the team who's sole intention was to replace the team we all knew and had followed for 100 issues. Her gimmick was she could transform into different versions of herself from the timestream. Most famously a version of herself that was just Kitty Pryde mixed with Tigra. On top of everything else, she was just an annoying child which I'm sure is nobody's favorite character trait of any version of Kitty. She stayed with the team for most of New Exiles, and like most of Claremont's exiles, were just outrageously boring to read. She died in battle with that HYDRA version of Sue Storm.

15. Rogue

Another one of Claremont'sNew Exiles and another boring take on a classic character. This version of Rogue was for all intents and purposes Mimic 2.0. She could absorb powers and store them for use and unlike the real Rogue people could touch her body which for some reason was covered in tattoos. She was also a cat burglar and now I realise that that is almost all I can say about the character. On the plus side, she did have quite a cool look. Towards the end of Claremont's painful tenure, she met a Gambit who for whatever dumb reason was the son of Susan Storm - and I guess that counted as a suitable end for this lame version of Rogue.

14. Holocaust

Holocaust (or sometimes Nemesis (or sometimes Genocide (or sometimes Apocalypse's son))) was a villain who was forced onto the Exiles by the Timebroker to hinder their progress. He wasn't with the Exiles very long and obviously locked horns with them most of the time, particularly on their first mission where they visited his home reality and Holocaust desired to take up his father's throne, but the team and Holocaust forged an uneasy alliance briefly against King Hyperion. Holocaust was killed shortly after during battle with the common enemy who cracked Holocaust open and sucked up all of his bio-energy killing him.

13. Beak

Beak was a mutant whose mutation made him look like a bird. A really ugly one at that. Outside of his appearance, he didn't have any powers. As a team member he was useless. That was his gimmick. Of course, in a truly predictable fashion, despite his lack of power he was the one who managed to defeat one of the Exiles' greatest foes King Hyperion. Following House of M, Beak was depowered which forced him to leave the Exiles. He went on to join the New Warriors as Blackwing and then later joined the New Teen Brigade alongside his girlfriend Angel.

12. Power Princess

Wearing a costume scarily similar to that of Swordsman, Squadron Supreme's Power Princess joined the Exiles during their "World Tour" adventure to help them capture Proteus (the same adventure that led to Spider-Man 2099 joining). After the initial encounter that saw the Exiles face off against the Squadron Supreme, she opted to join the team but she didn't do a great deal with the Exiles. Playing a rather generic role among the team as they chased Proteus around various realities, her only notable contribution as a team member was when the team faced off against Maestro. The Princess was sharply written out of the title as soon as Claremont took over to accomodate his addition of Psylocke onto the team.

11. Magnus

Magnus was the son of Magneto and Rogue in a reality where Professor Xavier was evil. Magnus was one of the founding Exiles but is probably better remembered as being the first Exile to die. In the second issue of the entire series, Magnus sacrificed himself to save the rest of the team from a nuclear explosion. And with those two issues, that was it for Magnus. Poor guy didn't even get to meet Weapon X.

10. Longshot

Former X-ManLongshot joined the Exiles while the team were hopping from reality to reality in a battle against Proteus. It was hard to be enthusiastic about the character joining as he conveniently was suffering from some major memory loss and his powers were presented as more of a deus ex machina above all else. After a modest tenure with the team, Claremont opted for Longshot to leave the team in Excalibur: Die by the Sword after he helped battle against a version of Merlyn alongside Claremont's equally hideous New Excalibur. Of course Longshot bumped into Dazzler and on account of his amnesia couldn't remember her. After teasing us of that reunion, Longshot went on to appear in X-Factor.

9. Sasquatch

Sasquatch is Walter Langkowski except this time it's not and it's a black woman named Heather Hudson. She was a rather weird combination of Alpha Flight's aforementioned Walter and also Heather McNeil but she also happened to be black and married to Wolverine. She was forced to kill Wolverine and then later married James Hudson. Joining the Exiles pretty early on, she was with the team for almost their entire run although she was resigned to a technical support role when she was rendered powerless after the Exiles managed to banish Tanaraq from her body. During Claremont's dastardly tenure, she became depressed and an alcoholic when she believed the team dead. And she was pregnant too. Claremont really covered all the bases in his bid to remove her from the team.

8. Sunfire

Mariko Yashida was the first Exile to join the team after they had formed. Replacing Magnus after his sacrifice in the second issue, she pretty quickly became an active part of the team. Sharing the powers of the former X-ManSunfire, she aptly named herself Sunfire too. As an Exile, she became the source of the affections of Morph which would go unrequited as Sunfire was openly gay. Although that didn't stop Morph from trying and once suggesting morphing into a woman so they could pursue a relationship. After a trip to one alternate reality, she began a relationship with a Spider-Woman that was cut short when she was teleported to another reality. She was killed mid-way into the series when Mimic was infected by the Brood and failed to alert the rest of the team. Sunfire's death left a huge impact on both Mimic and Morph and I'm sure the readers missed her being damn adorable too.

7. Sabretooth

Starting out as a member of Weapon X, Sabretooth set himself a part from his murderous cohorts by being that slight bit more moral. Leaving Weapon X to instead raise a dangerous child they were sent to kill, Sabretooth soon found himself a member of the Exiles when his plan failed. Sharing a bond with Blink, he was welcomed onto the team by all but Mimic. After joining the team, Sabretooth stayed with the Exiles for a long long time and even became their leader at one point. After defeating Proteus, Sabretooth briefly became a Hearld of Galactus in order to defeat an evil Silver Surfer.

6. Psylocke

Psylocke is a classic and definitive X-Men character, an almost universally beloved fan favorite and altogether a pretty solid and great character. But probably one of the lowest points of her existence, and this is a character who controversially swapped bodies at one point, was definitely her use in Exiles. The minute Chris Claremont began writing the series, Psylocke just happened to appear out of a random portal, kick the Exiles' leaders ass and then instantly join the team. She didn't really have any place on the team whatsoever, she wasn't unstuck in time like her fellow team-mates, she was solely there because Chris Claremont wanted her on the team. When every other character wasn't getting their ass kicked by Psylocke, they were all inner monologuing about how great Psylocke is. It was like reading a deluded piece of Psylocke fanfiction. Forcing her into the book and the team was the first thing Claremont did, and for such a great character, it's quite sad that she is also the thing most associated with the worst moments of the Exiles title.

5. Magik

Magik joined the Exiles after Blink's departure - which was one of the reasons the rest of the team didn't exactly welcome her. Although, the biggest reason the team were not too fond of her was because she had little interest in anything else except completing the tasks the Timebroker set for them. She was a badass with a sword who desperately wanted to return home in order to save her family and would sometimes go against the team's wishes if she saw a quicker way of completing their missions. Despite her attitude, when she wasn't going headstrong into a mission, we got to see another softer side to her, particularly the moments she shared with Morph. Magik's occasional backstabbing of the team (in this case literally backstabbing Sasquatch!) took it's toll when the team faced Hyperion.

4. Morph

Morph, or Changeling, was a founding member of the Exiles and one of the longest serving members. Although rarely serious and often seen as being annoying, Morph was truly the heart and soul of the group. He shared very close friendships with the majority of the team but particularly with Sunfire and Magik. Despite spending most of the series goofing around and making jokes, Morph went through a steady evolution from perpetual jokester to valued team-mate and hero, especially following the death of his unrequited love Sunfire. Towards the end of the series, and the revamp as New Exiles, Morph was "kinda" killed off in one of the worst moments of the series. While battling Proteus, the villain chose Morph as his next host and as it turns out he was the perfect host since his morphing ability meant he had an unlimited supply of energy for Proteus to fed upon. While Morph died because of this, Spider-Man 2099 created a machine that made Proteus effectively believe he was Morph and therefore Morph continued to live but it was really Proteus... yikes.

3. Mimic

Mimic was a superhuman (sometimes mutant depending what you read) who was introduced way back in 1966 as "the sixth X-Man". The original Mimic didn't exactly set the world alight, whereas on the other hand his representation in Exiles pretty firmly established a fanbase for the character. One of the founding Exiles, Mimic was with the team through the thick and thin sharing a relationship with Blink and even acting as the team's leader at times. After being responsible for the death of Sunfire, Mimic began taking a backseat among the team and pledged to never kill again. This would be his downfall as 30 or so issues later, he hesitated to kill Proteus and as a result Proteus killed him. Mimic's death was sadly more annoying than anything else. He was pretty quickly washed away after his crap death and, to the dismay of fans, never seen again.

2. Nocturne

TJ Wagner was Nocturne, the daughter of Nightcrawler and the Scarlet Witch, and her power was the ability to possess opponents coupled with her athletic prowess. She was one of the six founding Exiles and in the early days engaged in a relationship with Thunderbird. After Thunderbird was left braindead and in a coma, she spent a great deal of time sulking about until the Exiles, probably sick of her whining, ditched her in the 616 Universe. While chilling in the main universe, Nocturne met the real Nightcrawler and soon she wound up joining the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. After realising her mistake, she then joined New Excalibur and when Claremont disappointingly helmed both titles, the two teams crossed over allowing a very lame and underwhelming reunion between Nocturne and her former friends from the Exiles as well as a cured Thunderbird. Although, like the start of most of Claremont's run on Exiles, this was all just an excuse to dispose as many of the original Exiles he could in favor of the likes of Psylocke and Sage.

1. Blink

Blink was kinda the star of Exiles despite a good 20 or so issues not actually featuring her at all. The first character we met in the title, Blink hailed from the Age of Apocalypse reality and found herself pulled from time and she became the initial leader of the Exiles. She began a romantic relationship with her team-mate Mimic and after a dozen or so missions with the team, Blink was "sent home" and replaced with Magik. Blink, in fact, wasn't sent home but instead to a reality where her former father figure and member of Weapon X, Sabretooth had took up residence. After the death of Sunfire, she was inserted back onto the team just in time for the team to battle Hyperion for the first time. Blink stayed with the team until Claremont wrote the majority of the original team off, although before that she suffered heartbreak when Proteus killed her lover Mimic. Blink briefly returned to the Exiles in the incredibly short-lived revival in 2009.

Thank you all so much for playing! One more time, your winner: Blink!
