Mystiq joined the Exiles pretty sharply when Chris Claremont took over reigns of the book. Sabretooth saved him from an assault and after that Mystiq was apparently a fully-fledged member of the Exiles. Which means they have an easier recruitment drive than the Avengers. In fact his joining of the team was so poorly written, it wasn't even clear he was a member until the relaunch as New Exiles. He was basically just Mystiquebut as a man. Worth noting is he had a child with Destiny which was the original idea behind Nightcrawler's origin. Other than that though, the character was dull with a capital everything. Claremont must've thought having a character dress in a quirky anachronistic style would've been enough to win him over some sort of Doctor Who-style fandom. It wasn't. End of the day, the character just wasn't interesting and Claremont replacing most of the core team for guys like this is what led to the death of the series.
Thunderbird was one of the founding members of the Exiles and a former Horseman of all-around bastard Apocalypse. Despite that, the character never received much development in his short tenure with the team. Much like in X-Men, he was one of the earliest casualties among the team as he was made brain-dead in a battle with Galactus and left behind within the first 10 issues. He was later magically healed of his problem towards the end of the title under the hand of Chris Claremont. The character's most defining trait was probably hooking up with Nocturne and making her angsty for a long-time following his placement into a coma. Also, the fact he was butt ugly.
Psylocke is a classic and definitive X-Men character, an almost universally beloved fan favorite and altogether a pretty solid and great character. But probably one of the lowest points of her existence, and this is a character who controversially swapped bodies at one point, was definitely her use in Exiles. The minute Chris Claremont began writing the series, Psylocke just happened to appear out of a random portal, kick the Exiles' leaders ass and then instantly join the team. She didn't really have any place on the team whatsoever, she wasn't unstuck in time like her fellow team-mates, she was solely there because Chris Claremont wanted her on the team. When every other character wasn't getting their ass kicked by Psylocke, they were all inner monologuing about how great Psylocke is. It was like reading a deluded piece of Psylocke fanfiction. Forcing her into the book and the team was the first thing Claremont did, and for such a great character, it's quite sad that she is also the thing most associated with the worst moments of the Exiles title.
Magik joined the Exiles after Blink's departure - which was one of the reasons the rest of the team didn't exactly welcome her. Although, the biggest reason the team were not too fond of her was because she had little interest in anything else except completing the tasks the Timebroker set for them. She was a badass with a sword who desperately wanted to return home in order to save her family and would sometimes go against the team's wishes if she saw a quicker way of completing their missions. Despite her attitude, when she wasn't going headstrong into a mission, we got to see another softer side to her, particularly the moments she shared with Morph. Magik's occasional backstabbing of the team (in this case literally backstabbing Sasquatch!) took it's toll when the team faced Hyperion.
Morph, or Changeling, was a founding member of the Exiles and one of the longest serving members. Although rarely serious and often seen as being annoying, Morph was truly the heart and soul of the group. He shared very close friendships with the majority of the team but particularly with Sunfire and Magik. Despite spending most of the series goofing around and making jokes, Morph went through a steady evolution from perpetual jokester to valued team-mate and hero, especially following the death of his unrequited love Sunfire. Towards the end of the series, and the revamp as New Exiles, Morph was "kinda" killed off in one of the worst moments of the series. While battling Proteus, the villain chose Morph as his next host and as it turns out he was the perfect host since his morphing ability meant he had an unlimited supply of energy for Proteus to fed upon. While Morph died because of this, Spider-Man 2099 created a machine that made Proteus effectively believe he was Morph and therefore Morph continued to live but it was really Proteus... yikes.
Mimic was a superhuman (sometimes mutant depending what you read) who was introduced way back in 1966 as "the sixth X-Man". The original Mimic didn't exactly set the world alight, whereas on the other hand his representation in Exiles pretty firmly established a fanbase for the character. One of the founding Exiles, Mimic was with the team through the thick and thin sharing a relationship with Blink and even acting as the team's leader at times. After being responsible for the death of Sunfire, Mimic began taking a backseat among the team and pledged to never kill again. This would be his downfall as 30 or so issues later, he hesitated to kill Proteus and as a result Proteus killed him. Mimic's death was sadly more annoying than anything else. He was pretty quickly washed away after his crap death and, to the dismay of fans, never seen again.
TJ Wagner was Nocturne, the daughter of Nightcrawler and the Scarlet Witch, and her power was the ability to possess opponents coupled with her athletic prowess. She was one of the six founding Exiles and in the early days engaged in a relationship with Thunderbird. After Thunderbird was left braindead and in a coma, she spent a great deal of time sulking about until the Exiles, probably sick of her whining, ditched her in the 616 Universe. While chilling in the main universe, Nocturne met the real Nightcrawler and soon she wound up joining the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. After realising her mistake, she then joined New Excalibur and when Claremont disappointingly helmed both titles, the two teams crossed over allowing a very lame and underwhelming reunion between Nocturne and her former friends from the Exiles as well as a cured Thunderbird. Although, like the start of most of Claremont's run on Exiles, this was all just an excuse to dispose as many of the original Exiles he could in favor of the likes of Psylocke and Sage.
Blink was kinda the star of Exiles despite a good 20 or so issues not actually featuring her at all. The first character we met in the title, Blink hailed from the Age of Apocalypse reality and found herself pulled from time and she became the initial leader of the Exiles. She began a romantic relationship with her team-mate Mimic and after a dozen or so missions with the team, Blink was "sent home" and replaced with Magik. Blink, in fact, wasn't sent home but instead to a reality where her former father figure and member of Weapon X, Sabretooth had took up residence. After the death of Sunfire, she was inserted back onto the team just in time for the team to battle Hyperion for the first time. Blink stayed with the team until Claremont wrote the majority of the original team off, although before that she suffered heartbreak when Proteus killed her lover Mimic. Blink briefly returned to the Exiles in the incredibly short-lived revival in 2009.
