Welcome back to 10 Comics to Buy This Week. As you're probably well aware, there are a metric crap-ton of comic books hitting shelves every single week. And for the common consumer, it's financially impossible to pick up everything. That's where this column steps in like your superhero savior, drawing your attention to 10 books worth your hard-earned dollars during any given week.

We not only going to spotlight tights and capes books, but also some indie titles off the beaten path, which, if all goes well, will broaden your reading horizons.

Action Comics #9

Now that Brainiac has been disposed off, it’s time for a minor detour to visit the Supermen from parallel earths, as only Grant Morrison can bring you. Morrison is joined by artist Gene Ha to tell the adventures of President Superman and more.

Action Comics has had some great moments thus far, but it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. We’re still waiting for Morrison to reveal his grand scheme for the series, but we feel we’re closer than ever to that point.

Animal Man #9

Separated from Buddy, the remaining members of the Baker family try to evade horrible danger with the help of John Constantine. Writer Jeff Lemire is joined by now-regular-artist Steve Pugh for part one of “Extinction is Forever.”

Daredevil #12

The Omega Effect crossover is over, but Daredevil is not out of the woods yet; he still has the Omega Drive and every crime syndicate in the Marvel universe after him. But Matt Murdock is one cool, collected mamma jamma, so I’m sure he’ll be able to handle it.

In fact, Matt’s decided to unwind from recent events with a very hot date with assistant district attorney Kristen McDuffie. Well played, Matt. Well played indeed.

Dial H #1

Award-winning novelist China Meville kicks off a brand-new series as part of DC’s second wave of New 52 titles.

Dial H represents a fresh take on the classic “Dial H for Hero” series from yesteryear, asking the question of what would happen if you discovered an unbelievably powerful artifact that allowed you to turn into a super hero.

Earth Two #1

DC headlines their second wave of New 52 titles with James Robinson and Nicola Scott’s Earth Two. This new ongoing series follows the adventures Alan Scott, Jay Garrick and many more from Earth Two. And trust us, this is not the Earth Two you remember, so who knows what’s going to happen.

Be sure to pick up this oversized debut issue.

Epic Kill #1

You would have to be a fool to not acknowledge that Image Comics is churning out some great comics right now. Enter: Epic Kill, Image’s latest original series, written and drawn by Raffaele Ienco.

Epic Kills follows an 18-year-old super assassin named Song, who has a target placed on her head by the President. Now everyone is gunning for her, literally, and it’s up to Song to turn the tables, which she’ll undoubtedly do in epic style, as the name suggests.

G.I. Combat #1

Join a slew of talented writers and artists as they cast the spotlight on DC’s classic war story franchises. This first issue features the first chapter of “War That Time Forgot,” by writer J.T. Krul and artist Ariel Olivetti, as well as the first installment of “Unknown Soldier,” by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Dan Panosian.

Hopefully G.I. Combat makes a bigger splash with readers than the now-cancelled Men of War.

Mind the Gap #1

After being attacked on a Manhattan subway platform, Elle Peterssen is left in a coma with the only clues capable of pinpointing her attacker buried deep in her mind. This new ongoing thriller series by Jim McCann and artists Rodin Esquejo and Sonia Oback will hopefully be another check in the win column for Image Comics.

Swamp Thing #9

Break out the champagne; it’s a new issue of Swamp Thing! Sethe has made his play and Abigail stands as a harbinger of darkness. What will Swamp Thing choose to do: destroy Abigail and save the earth, or will his heart take control of the situation, potentially dooming the planet in the process? We will be there to find out!

X-O Manowar #1

Valiant Entertainment revives one of their most popular characters with the help of writer Robert Venditti and artist Cary Nord.

Aric of Dacia has never been a stranger to war, so when captured by a mysterious enemy known as The Vine (not us), he has no choice but to take up arms as the X-O Manowar if he ever wants to return to his home world and see his family again.

This guy's got the right idea. Although I'm not too thrilled with Gene Ha having the artistic duties on Action Comics.

Aside from my regular New 52 fix, and the new wave titles (especially looking forward to Dial H) I'll be reading

Supurbia #3 - Suprisingly well-written combination of Desperate Housewives and JLA.

Boys #66 - I fear the ending will be underwhelming compared to the climax in issue #65, but I have to give it a shot.

Spider #1 - Since the Shadow turned out to be great from the newly revived pulp characters by Dynamite Entertainment, I decided to check this out as well.

Supreme #64 - Even though this may be the weakest title from Image's Extreme Relaunch, #63 was still a good read for my taste.

Also Sweet Tooth #33.

I'll probably check out Manowar and Mind the Gap as well.

#43 Posted by Holuntron (135 posts) - 1 year, 23 days ago - Show Bio

@Cafeterialoca: Wow! That's a low price!

#44 Posted by Adnan (1037 posts) - 1 year, 23 days ago - Show Bio

I'll be grabbing Dial H, Mind the Gap, and Green Arrow tomorrow. Tempted to grab Action Comics, since it sounds like it might be a self-contained oneshot.

#45 Posted by Om1kron (1147 posts) - 1 year, 23 days ago - Show Bio

I actually cannot wait to get to the comic book store so I can take Action Comics off of my pull list.

#46 Posted by Hatutzeraze (268 posts) - 1 year, 23 days ago - Show Bio

Great list!

From that list I will be getting Action Comics, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, G.I. Combat, Daredevil, Dial H, and possibly X-O Manowar.

A notable list beyond these might include:

- The Spider #1 (David Liss)

- Bart Simpson's Pal Milhouse #1 (w/a Gail Simone story)

- Defenders #6 (Fraction writing the Immortal Weapons once again!!)

- Green Arrow #9 (finale of the first Nocenti arc)

- Smallville: Season 11 #1 (this method worked wonders for the Buffy franchise...)

#47 Posted by WWAJfan (178 posts) - 1 year, 23 days ago - Show Bio

Venom # 17, start of the Savage Six Arc

#48 Posted by Mucklefluga (1574 posts) - 1 year, 23 days ago - Show Bio

Earth 2 and Spider-man

#49 Posted by TheOptimist (713 posts) - 1 year, 23 days ago - Show Bio

Action Comics: Although I wish we had more build on the main Superman character, this'll be an interesting tale at the very least.

Animal Man: Consistently one of the best books out there... can't wait for Deadworld.

Dial H: I'm really hoping that people will give this one a shot and that it'll live up to its potential... quirky and perfectly timed with the growing interest of The Dark and The Edge, this could be one heck of a sleeper.

Earth-2: Nicola Scott alone would get me on board for this; the new direction of the JSA characters will lock this in, one way or another.

GI Combat: Not many people seem to be going for this... probably after the burnout of Men of War, its chances aren't great... but just look at those dinosaurs? MILITARY VERSUS DINOSAURS. Ha, I don't even care about the quality of story at this point (although I also am tickled by the backup possibilities), I just want to see soldiers taking on the dinos.

Swamp Thing: No explanation needed on excitement here. If you aren't reading this book, fix your mistake, please.

(I'm also considering everything else, but that'll depend on whether I get a paycheck this week)

#50 Posted by feargalr (1073 posts) - 1 year, 23 days ago - Show Bio

I've never read anything from Earth 2 before so I think I'll pick it up and check it out
