Channing Tatum Closes Deal to Play Gambit

Looks like Channing Tatum will be playing Gambit after-all. According to reports from THR, actor Channing Tatum closed the deal today with Fox to play the titular character in the 2016 film. While there were reports earlier in the week that Tatum was going to turn down the part, that's not the case anymore.

Tatum and the studio did hit some rough patches while coming to terms, including backend compensation. There's no news yet on how involved Tatum will be after this solo film. Fox does see Gambit as a character much like Wolverine that could be an anchor-point in their cinematic world, so there's a strong possibility that Gambit will be around for a while. Rupert Wyatt will be directing the film and the release date is October 7, 2016.

I knew they wouldn't let him walk. They invested too much in him already. If they just let him walk, that would've spoke volumes on the state of the movie.

This is good news! Say what you will about Tatum, but a Gambit movie probably wouldn't happen without him.

Wonder how he looks in long hair and if he'll even have it. I also wonder if he can do the accent. Too me the character will be missing something if he doesn't have it.

I wouldn't be too surprised if it was a battle between paid by the net or by the gross profit of the film + actors guild approved usual compensation.

Glad he's sticking around. I think what some actors are going into superhero movies or franchises in general thinking is how much $ RDJ took in after making Ironman a hit and ushering in the Avengers film. RDJ got a good piece of what Avengers brought in, any piece of a billion is just insane money. I think stand alone films like Gambit and Deadpool offer more to the broader universe and Fox should stick with those if they wanna keep the film rights. However I don't think either of the characters getting solo movies could work with the younger AoA cast of X Men or the F4 well if a crossover does happen.

Give me solo films about Storm, maybe Colossus [ending with how he met Warhead pre Deadpool?], a younger Wolverine, etc... leading up to an All New X Men type movie.

Id say what happened was Tatum had signed on for one or two films and then Jackman told Fox he was leaving so they wanted Tatum to sign on for more films to fill in his role and Tatum was deciding if he wanted to do as many films as they wanted. At least thats how I took it.

They needed to work things out with him regarding long term plans. Makes perfect sense.

Now it’s a done deal and we can get on with it (and learn from this to not get carried away with un-sourced internet rumours).

It's really weird that they were so public about his involvement for months without him being locked in.

Personally, I'm not a huge Tatum fan. Actually, I'm not even a small one. I think he's generally underwhelming as an actor (though he can be good when he wants to be). My biggest concern is if he can pull off the accent. If he can, then we're good. If not...we have a problem.

Im glad to hear the movie will continue on, however im not jumping for joy tatum will continue with the roll.... at least they didn't decide this time to make one of their popular Caucasian heros black on the big screen.....
