Ever wanted to write comedy? Heres how:

  1. Choose what kind of comedy you wanna write. Theres several kinds and heres examples: Slapstick (anvil falling on head), Fourth Wall (characters like Deadpool seem to just know there in a comic), Dark Humor (its humor... but dark), or more. These are only examples.
  2. Think of how you want it to come up. You see, sometimes comedy just comes up. Other times it takes a while to fit in a good joke.
  3. Try to edit the joke afterwards to make it fit in more with whats going on. You cant just put in a joke when something very complex is going on. You have to find a way for it to fit in. Example: The moon was dark, and the two were scared senseless. Suddenly, a strange smelling fog came through the area. "Did you smell that?" said the man, "Sorry, I get gassy when I'm scared" said his partner. "No, the OTHER smell!" quickly replied the man.

Please remember, if you want to do just random humor out of no where, here's how to perfect it:

  1. Come up with what you want to do. This is the most important part of comedy. (Example: Were-Hamster Vs. Hotdogzilla)
  2. Dont just cram as many details as possible into a joke, then it starts to go away from the comedy and eventually just ends up as a huge glob of words.
  3. Remember that comedy has many forms. Sometimes all forms work together in one story.
  4. Let your imagination run free, just make sure the joke makes sense.

Comedy Characters

If your writing characters like Forbush Man or Ambush Bug, or just coming up with a comedy character, remember what comedy characters need:

  1. A funny back-story
  2. A funny costume
  3. A funny everything... maybe not EVERYTHING, but just remember what you have learned about jokes. Its basically the same idea except with characters, not sentences.

Pop Culture

Refferences to pop culture are very popular among comedy-writers.

Without pop culture we never be able to use the following phrases:

  1. "Holy Soul Train!"
  2. "Fatter then Fat Albert!"
  3. "NO!!! NOT BIEBER MUSIC!"

And many more....

I always thought that the early Giffen/Dematteis run on Justice League was the quintessential example of how to write comic book. I would heartily recommend anyone wanting to write comic comedy giving that series a look.
