What If The Powers of Captain Universe drove Spider-Man Insane? Essentially "A Dark Captain Universe" type story, for those who remember the Spider-Man/Captain Universe story during The Acts of Vengeance story Peter Parker was constantly being hounded, jerked around and abused by the Public and in addition he had gained cosmic level powers which...though aided him in stopping more powerful villains like The Grey Hulk and Magneto...increased the Public's fear of Spider-Man to catastrophic heights. It brought Spider-Man nearly to the point where he could have accidentally disintegrated Mary Jane using Captain Universe's molecular manipulation powers. But he was able to keep his cool and things worked out in the end...but What If they hadn't?
What If, like the ill-fated Jean Grey, the cosmic powers granted to Spider-Man drove him insane? Just imagine the day he nearly struck Mary Jane...and now imagine her being torn asunder by a wave of cosmic energy. The catastrophe grows in measure as Spider-Man, who now realizes what he has become, exerts all of his pent-up anger and fury upon the innocent denziens of New York City before finally sending Manhattan Island the way of Atlantis. The Avengers, having just returned from a fight with an amped up Nebula, are shocked to find the entire planet descending into chaos and anarchy as Captain Universe's rampage reaches its crescendo. Thor, refusing to allow his comrades to sacrifice themselves in battle against such a powerful foe, teleports his friends to Asgard while he goes in alone. The God of Thunder finds the raving lunatic once known as Peter Parker and takes him on one-on-one.
But as time passes them by Thor begins to falter, he has had to over exert himself in combat all this time and now he is paying for it in spades, and just when it seems like the God of Thunder is about to die a brightly shining light opens up the blackening storm clouds and from the Heavens every battle-capable Soldier and Valkyrie Asgard has on call descend. After what seems like an eternity of battle Thor and his allies finally get the upper hand and send Captain Universe crashing downward towards the sinking remains of Eastern Europe. But their victory is bitter sweet, the Earth's core had been greatly damaged long before Thor's arrival, the planet is dying and The Asgardians are forced to watch as the planet implodes on itself. Thor returns to Asgard with the unfortunate duty of telling The Avengers (who at that time were only comprised of Captain America, The Vision, Iron Man and...Hawkeye? I can't remember) that everyone they ever loved is gone and the world of their birth no longer exists. Meanwhile...in the Shi'ar Galaxy long-range sensors from a Science Vessel detect a massive singularity opening near the Throneworld.
Princess Majestrix Lilandra who had just gotten ready for the day's events looks up to the Heavens in sheer terror as a massive Galactus-sized Captain Universe-Spider-Man (who had absorbed the Earth's lifeforce into himself in order to become larger, more powerful and most importantly...survive the death of Earth) descends upon the Shi'ar Throneworld with the intention of consuming the delictable lifeforce energies stored within the Planet's Core. It cuts off there leaving the reader to wonder...WTF happens next?!
