Voyager X, Chapter 1- The Awakening

It was quiet. All too quiet for a single man to venture out into the large territory where no man has gone before. The generation starship, Voyager X housed millions of mutants in order to preserve their extinction. Henry Kall had remembered the days when he used to talk with the late Xavier back on Earth. Xavier was the founder of mutants at that time. The time when the X-Men were first formed, and brought to save mankind from terrible, villainous mutants and other enemies. Even non-mutants threatened to kill mutants. Now, Earth was a fragile, lonely planet. It was peaceful back then until a genetic race threatened to eliminate mutant kind.

The decision had to be made for Henry Kall for he is the only one to provide support for these sleeping mutants. There were tons of them, displaying powers than any human can imagine. Henry was a mutant himself, an immortal who can heal injuries and cheat death, much like the late, Mr. Immortal who couldn’t be killed. He felt lonely at times, yet he knows that there are others like him, waiting to be awakened at any moment. Space is a large place to be. Their destination is Planet X, where they can hope to live in peace and lead their happy lives.

The lives of these mutants depend on every survival, no matter what. Henry decided it’s best to live this way. He hoped that the genetic race, the so-called Inheritors won’t come in their way and destroy them in an instant. No, he wouldn’t dare to think about it. He only wished they hadn’t existed at all. He came to a large computer, displaying hibernation chambers, where all mutants lay in their restless dreams. None of them had a time travel ability to go back in time and prevent the Inheritors from happening. The databank suggested that. He also asked the computer in pre-mutants, whose powers haven’t awakened yet. But the main computer couldn’t say anything that could provide further assistance to help him to find ways in destroying this filthy race. The Inheritors once claimed to have instant knowledge of the X-Gene and how they can tamper with it, unleashing full potential or turning the mutants against their own kind. That....Henry wouldn’t want to think about it. But it did happen in the past. He tried to avoid it as much as he can. Failure was never an option for him, which is why he intends to do the things his own way rather someone telling him what to do. Not all mutants expect him to save their lives. There were others who share his common interest in eliminating the Inheritors.

“Warning...Warning...Meteor shower approaching at approximately 100 km.” The computer said.

Henry pressed the button near the panel of his computer. The screen switched into view. Showers of meteorites were breaking apart. He immediately activated the force shield around Voyager X. There are times like these when one has to make sure that trouble doesn’t come in their wake. He told the computer to engage laser weapons to fire the meteorites. The computer obeyed Henry’s command and fired. Full flashes of light swept the view screen. Henry hoped the computer could perform a lot of tasks for him, when he couldn’t do it on his own.

Another fire blasted the meteorites. However, the meteorites, managed to hit the force shield like a big bang. Heavy sounds can be heard from outside the generation starship. Henry felt the shaking moment as if the earthquake had struck him. He held his hands on the railing to prevent his fall. But he knows he can recover soon. What he doesn’t like is the pain that comes upon him. He doesn’t like it at all. Pain was his weakness and that is why he wasn’t able to save his kind from the Inheritors. Henry recalled that night when the Inheritor threatened to kill his beloved wife.

Henry Kall...You have arrived just in time. You and your pitiful race will not survive this era. We are the Inheritors. We are the rulers of the universe. We are Gods...and there is nothing you can do to save your kind.

That’s not true. I may be weak but I will not stand down and give up on my people.

Really? What about your wife? Do you want to see her die? I hope not...

The memory flashed away from Henry’s mind. He concentrated on the latest danger to his kind. The computer kept firing the meteorites one by one, sometimes altogether. However, a single meteorite managed to penetrate the force shield, which then created a small hole in the ship. The main computer gave out a warning. But it still fired the meteorites. Henry asked the computer to repair the hole caused by the meteorite. The computer took a few minutes to listen to the instruction since it focused on the danger at hand.

Henry stood there like a statue, watching the meteorite attack. It went on for fifteen minutes and then it was done. Henry asked the computer the vital signs of the mutant sleepers. The computer said the mutants were still safe and no harm came to them. Henry felt relieved. He turned off the view screen and went back to his quarters. He looked himself in the mirror. Henry was a man who looks early in his 20s, so young that any woman would want him. But Henry only wanted one, the one who was killed by the Inheritor. He removed his black-greyish suit, put them on the chair. He slept on the bed, comfortably as he thought about his late wife.

The next day, Henry came to the bridge, and sat on his chair. He felt like the leader of his people. He never wanted to be one. But the others needed him. They need him more than ever. He got up from his chair, stared at the blackness of space from the outer window of the starship. It was beautiful.

“Computer...” Henry said. “It’s time to wake the others.”

To be continued in Voyager X, Chapter 2- The Inheritors.

What’s this? A new series? What’s it about if you ask? Well, the series is set on a far future where mutants are on the verge of extinction. Who are the Inheritors? What are they? Who are they? What are they all about? Find out in the next chapter of Voyager X.
