Pope Kurt Joseph I looked down from his throne at the assembled Mass. He cast his eyes to the heavens and raised his fingers, tracing the sign of the Cross “Benedicat tibi Dominus et custodiat te. Amen”
“Amen” The Basilica filled with the sounds of people shuffling as they rose from their knees and began to exit; some stayed to chat and socialise. The Pope smiled at his congregation and slowly stood, two cardinals stepped quickly and quietly to his sides but he waved them off.
“I am not crippled,” he muttered as he exhaled heavily and began to chuckle “Unlike Father Xavier” The two cardinals didn’t know where to look or whether to laugh. Kurt smiled and patted them on the shoulders with his three blue three fingered hands.
“Joking is not a sin my sons” And with that he exploded in a cloud of brimstone and an audible BAMF.
Beach of Rhodes
Mehmed II sat in his tent, his hands clasped to his jaw as he looked at the map and diorama on the table before him. The tent flap opened and in strode his commander, En Sabah Nur.
“My lord” he said as he slightly nodded, mainly bowing as a courtesy rather than any actual respect.
“I cannot see the battle!” said Mehmed as he rose in frustration “This citadel has me at my wits end! I cannot see a weak point; all I see is a long siege!”
En Sabah Nur crouched and looked at the map and figurines “Maybe if you came out to the field of battle, instead of playing with your toys…my lord”
Mehmed scowled at his commander, men had been killed for such impertinecene! But in these changing times even the sultan of the Ottoman Empire took consul from these beings, even the Pope was a mutantis. Mehmed looked back at the gray skinned Egyptian “What do you suggest?”
“We take the tower of St Nicholas” said En Sabah as he flicked the wooden piece over “It is a key point of defence for the knights. We take the tower; the rest of the island should fall”
“What about that Sir Percy of Scandia and his accursed black blade?”
“Leave the Black Knight to me”
City of Rhodes
Sir Percy looked at the Ottoman ships clogging the harbour, their tents and troops on the beaches and shook his head, half praying too and half cursing out his god. The sun was rapidly sinking in the west.
“Join the Knights Hospitaller they said!” laughed Piotr Rasputin as he joined Percy on the battlements “Defend Christendom” He shook Percy’s hand roughly “Tonight could be our last. I am thankful to have met and served with you”
“Every night shift you say that Piotr” laughed Percy
“Obviously our Lord does not yet want me in his service!” chuckled Piotr as he clambered up onto the parapet “DID YOU HEAR ME YOU GODLESS BASTARDS!”
The sound of arrows and their black shafts were highlighted by the setting sun, as a dozen rained down towards Piotr. Percy took cover as Piotr’s skin changed from flesh to metal and they harmlessly bounced off him.
“THE LORD IS GRACIOUS IN HIS GIFTS” he bellowed, beating his chest
“Get down you idiot” said Percy “No need to get them riled up so early”
“Let them waste their arrows!” said Antonio Rigido as he joined his companions on the battlements, his distinct red and gold platemail catching the dying light “More supplies for us”
“Gah! You polish that any more you’ll blind God himself!” sniggered Pitor as he jumped down “Any word from the hawk?”
“None, but no news is hopefully good news,” Antonio drew his sword “We must wait and pray”
“His ‘holiness’ could just will himself here” said Percy, his voice full of derision.
“You will mind your tongue!” The trio turned to see their commanding officer Captain Remy LeBeau striding across the battlements “You are a knight hospitaller, in the service of his holiness Pope Kurt Joseph the first, and by all the saints you will be respectful of that!”
“Pray you keep silent!” chided Remy as he continued to yell at Percy “Stop gawking you two idiots and man your posts!” Antonio and Piotr hurried away.
“We are thankful for your sword and your arm Sir Percy,” said Captain LeBeau “But your comments I can do without. You serve a greater purpose; don’t force me to arrest you as a heretic”
Sir Percy inhaled deeply, biting his lip as he listened to the words.
“If his holiness could be here, I’m sure he would” said Captain LeBeau “But his days as a soldier are long over. He is the head of the church, guiding the realm on spiritual matters”
“Yes Captain” replied Sir Percy
Captain LeBeau slapped him on the arm “Now let us speak on how tonight, we hurt these heathen barbarians!”
