Hello and Welcome to the Fan-Fic Section!

FAQ

What can I post here?

The title of this section ("Fan-Fic") often makes people think that they can only post stories related to comics or other commercial properties. However, we encourage people to post anything, especially original content (as long as it follows the forum rules). Think of this section as the writer's version of the Artist Show-Off.

Rules

We don't have many rules in the FF section, but here are the four you must follow at all times:

1) NEVER Post material of a sexual nature or swear

You are required to follow Site Rules and FAQs even in your stories (anyone who wants to complain about the hampering of creative genius is invited to post elsewhere).

2) NEVER Post anything intensely violent

When we say intensely violent, we mean INTENSELY violent. If you going into great detail and long paragraphs dedicated entirely on how Hannibal Lecter kills and eats people then you might get a warning (and I mean GREAT detail). But this is a rule intended for the most extreme of circumstances. If you are concerned about a specific story then you may PM a moderator and we will address your concerns. However, in most circumstances this is not a problem.

3) NEVER Plagiarize

Plagiarism is considered the copying, in total or in part, of author's work without clear attribution. If you are posting someone else's story, you must have the author's express permission to do so. They must know you are posting their work here.

Also you if you are writing a story based on the users of CV then you MUST get those named users's permission. If a user withdraws their permission for your usage of their name then you will be asked to edit them out or have your threads locked as this might be seen as harassment which is against site rules. Of course a ruling on this subject is done via a case by case basis.

While we do want to see you shine through your original fiction here, please keep in mind that this is the Internet. If someone steals your idea, it is plagiarism! So if you think you have the greatest idea since Batman or The Lord of the Rings, you should protect it accordingly, and that is solely up to you.

AND 4) NEVER Post stories...

...that use the works of: Anne Rice, Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, or Raymond E. Feist. They have super-lawyers and do not allow the posting of fan fiction on regulated websites.

Ok? Huzzah.

If you have any questions about these rules or unsure about the appropriateness of a topic, feel free to PM myself and or comment below.

First!

And, I have a quick question on the violence part.... Are battles with thousands of people hacking and slashing at each other considered.... Bad? And what about going into minor detail about someone's head being sliced off?

@The_Deathstroker: Well, rule 2 is really intended for the most extreme of circumstances. Like if someone were to go into great detail into how they were going to kill their next door neighbor we'd be very concerned on numerious levels (and we might actually do more than just lock their thread...), but in most cases the rule wouldn't apply.

If you are concerned about a particular story then you could pm me or one of the other Mods and we could check it out for you, but honestly: I am not all that concerned. At the very least if you are worried about your story you could add a little disclaimer at the beginning like, "warning this story might be considered violent by some people." but ultimately I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Do I have to post the story strictly here, or can I link it to fanfiction.net where my story already exists while using my comic vine post as a comment/feedback section?

Sorry for the delay. I won't say it is against the rules to advertise stuff on other sites (there are other sites???). However, I should give you the disclaimer that I don't know how well received it would be (by which I mean how many actual comments/how much feedback you would get). You could try it, but in my experience it does not go over all that well. (you could post a link in the Fan-Fic "Advertising / Help Request" Thread and you might hook a few reviewers that way. That might be best).

But I would encourage you to post it here. With this site's history of spambots, people often times stay away from the threads with off site links (even if they are from valid sources).

I see 'No script form' is a Writer's Guild rule. Is it also an overall forum rule?

@wim_garnet:

No. You made post any story in script form in the forum itself. That is only a rule for the writers guild. However, scripts aren't as popular as story form, so it may affect your readership and feedback.

Welcome to the forum by the way, we always need new writers here.

Yeah, like @wildvine said, it's just a Writers Guild rule. I don't really care for the form, so I didn't want to deal with it for Guild submissions. That's just me, not the forum.

P.S. I've added a note to the Guild rules, specifying that it's just a Guild rule. -cb

@wildvine @cbishop

Thank you both for the quick responses. I had never written a script so I'm trying it out. I don't know if I'll post the result, but it's definitely giving me a new appreciation for comic writers.

Thanks, wildvine, for the welcome. This is a great forum; I'm getting a lot out of it. Now to post that next chapter...

The OP specifically states no sexual content. CV is a "family/kid friendly" site, so think "edited for TV" with parents groups looking over your shoulder. Sex can be implied without showing it. For instance: innuendos, or the type of scene where "they" kiss, scene switches, and next day, she's in the kitchen wearing a long shirt. Does that get someone's porn fix taken care of? No, but it does get the point across without violating the rules. If someone needs porn that bad, there are other sites out there for that.

@lordvindican:

If its a story it should be fine. Just look over the Fan Fic rules first. If you think it would be better as a battle then check that forums rules.

The rules need to be updated. The site rules on swearing have changed. @wildvine could tell you for sure, but I think pretty much the only thing that's off the table is the F-bomb, including censored versions, because the site has banned it. However, "creative replacement words" are okay. Pretty much, just keep in mind that CV is trying to be a "family friendly" site.

@drmirakuru: You can say most swears. Just avoid improper anatomy words and the F word. There's some confusion about if censored versions of the F word (F*** F*ck etc) so I would just avoid that word. If you just have to use that word just have your character say "what the #*%@" or something to that end.

EDIT: I think I meant to say any other FanFic websites in general with content that would look like it would also be covered very well here

@wildvine What's the general community stance on featuring anime/manga characters in fan-fiction? I understand that the issue is a bit of a stickler in the Battles sub-forum so I'm wondering if that's the same case for the Fan-Fic subforum

I have a question, i've been considering trying my hand out at fanfic writing and i've eventually decided to attempt to write the MCU version of Born Again, with some added liberties -- some characters not of the MCU added in, namely Venom in their more villainous stage, before it became the Lethal Protector, Deadpool and Wolverine, would that be alright or nah, this would also be my first fanfic so *shrug*

@nordok is our resident mod these days, so they'd have the final say, but I know we've had Creepypasta stories on here before. Pretty much, drop no F-bombs, no explicit sex (especially the non-consensual variety), and you're all good.

@jexsu:

First of all, allow me to clarify something: moderator is a voluntary position. We are not paid by the site; and the vast majority of us have actual, real-world jobs (among other things) that occupy a considerable amount of our time. Moderating these forums is something we do in our spare time, as we are able, and no, we are not going to catch every violation of the rules, as none of us have the time to read every post in every forum. This does not change the rules, and we will address violations that we do catch or that are brought to our attention, which you are by all means welcome to do.
