Deadshot: Last Shots- Prologue

UN Headquarters, New York City...

From the top of the building, which stayed closer to the United Nations Headquarters, Floyd Lawton activated his sound system. He grabbed his sniper bag, put it on the floor. He opened it, looking at his precious weapon. His thoughts wander around in his head for a while. He recalled back in his first solo mission, assassinating the famous Pope of a beautiful, artistic country, Italy. He never thought to this day that he could kill someone, who is more famous than anyone in the world, whether they were celebrities, entrepreneurs, or the presidents. It was his duty to kill these famous people. But for what reason he had to do the kills? Only one woman knows this answer and that is Amanda Waller. He asked questions to her, regarding the whole reason behind the killings, ever since he was put back on the dirty job. But Amanda didn’t want to tell him, otherwise Floyd would have quit his job years ago. After so many years, Floyd decided to quit the job until he found out that he had the incurable lung disease. But he didn’t have any other choice. His life was on the line and the only person who can save him right now, was Amanda.

He took the parts of the sniper from the suitcase, attaching each pieces of it, making them into a whole. Then he took out ten bullets, inserting them inside the calibre clip. He sort of smiled, but didn’t want to anyway because he felt had enough of the killings in one day, including his past. He wanted to see his lovely daughter, Zoe. It’s been years that Floyd never had a chance to speak with his daughter. Now, she’s a teenager attending high school like every other kid out there. He watched her in secret, sometimes, holding a newspaper, and pretending to read it. Or he sat on one of the chairs besides a restaurant where he had noticed that Zoe and his friends were having fun time together. Wherever she went, sometimes he had to follow her without Zoe noticing it. All those chances were there, yet Floyd felt he wasn’t ready to tell her the truth. What could he tell her?

He put the sniper through the window, watching a small figure, who stood near the stand, making wonderful speeches towards the crowd. The back row of the crowd consisted of screaming girls and high-loud boys, cheering for him. There were security guards too, standing in front of them, and making sure that the crazy guests wouldn’t barge in the heavy crowd of listeners and interrupting the famous man’s speech.

Floyd didn’t expect that he would kill this person. His name was heard throughout the news channel, offering peace, and laying down the weapons of mass destruction from the Middle Eastern countries. He was the true saviour and a hero, and here Floyd is pointing his precious rifle at the famous man, who kept saving the world again and again. He wondered why Amanda would want him to kill the famous man. Who knows? Maybe, this man was dangerous to her. Amanda had once said that some people in the world were considered dangerous and they had to be stopped. No matter what they claim to be and what they do. They were seen by the Checkmate organization as serious threats. Yes, they have to be a good, logical reason to all of this. Floyd can quit now while he can. But his lung disease is almost killing him. He can feel his chest pains during the missions, even having the hard time to breathe. Sometimes he coughs blood. He remembered the time he had to fight Batman and at the same time, he lost his breath and got knocked out by the detective. That mission was a failure and Amanda decided to ignore it because she found out that Batman was on the similar mission as Deadshot, except he doesn’t kill the new villains who were appearing in Gotham City.

Floyd gave out a sigh, breathing in and out from the top of his lungs. His doctor said to him that he had to take rest and not do anything else much. But he hadn’t listened to him after he found out that he had the lung disease. He needed to do this, one final shot and then have the cure. It has been said that certain diseases of the human body cannot be cured. That is when Amada said it wasn’t true. The cure for his lung disease is possible. He believed her. For that, Amanda had shown the proof to him in case if Floyd thinks that he will get tricked. He was never been tricked by the leader of the Checkmate organization, not even once.

During his Suicide Squad days, he had a bomb implanted on his neck as well as the other members. If he had gotten out of the missions, he would have been killed instantly. Those were the good and bad days before he contracted the lung disease. Now, he didn’t have the bomb inside of him, because Amanda knew that he was going to die anyway, if he hadn’t accepted her offer in the first place or failed a mission.

Floyd aimed the sniper at the person locking him in target. Before he had to make a shot, he wanted to see if he can aim at him directly. It became clear and there was no indication that he will get interfered during the mission.

All clear, Floyd thought. He kind of coughed, hoping that he wouldn’t spill out blood inside his mask. He had to take the mask off and wash it later. It happened once, and Floyd decided he didn’t need to wear the mask. He can just breathe the outside air, the freshness coming from it. But after he stopped coughing, he put the mask on anyway, hiding his secret identity in case the people notice him, shooting at long range from the other building. Not only Floyd was good at sniping, he was trained in arm-to-arm combat. He had to topple the men down like rats, killed them, so that he could focus on the mission at hand.

He breathed again; thinking of the good days with his own family until a tragedy happened that caused his wife to be killed. On that day, Floyd thought his child was dead too until years later he found that she was alive, being looking after by her adopted parents. For him, it was a good thing to see that she was being taken care of. But he needed to let her know that he was still alive. He had to tell her the whole truth before he could die. He ignored the thought, letting himself focus on the famous figure. This was his last mission, his last shot, and his last chance to get the cure.

“Goodbye,” Floyd said, still aiming at the figure. He pulled the trigger.

To be continued in Deadshot: Last Shots, Chapter 1- Death Wish.

What’s this? Floyd Lawton is dying of lung cancer? Who was the last target that he was going to kill? I think you know. Will he succeed? Well, you’ll find out in the end of the series. For now, step back and see when Floyd finds out that he contracted the lung disease. BLAM!
