DCRC: Superman #0.3

No Caption Provided

Smallville, Kansas

The security camera turned slowly away from the door as it automatically scanned the yard. Clark took the opportunity and dashed to the door, hoping that his speed was enough to bridge the gap in time. Once at the door, he gently pulled it from its hinges, all the while checking the camera’s position. It was beginning to turn back now. He needed to speed up, yet he also needed to be careful, so as no permanent damage could be found. He slid through the gap he created, once it was wide enough. As the camera returned to its original position, the door was resting in place, seemingly normal.

Clark began to scan through the walls of the building until he found his destination: the head office. He checked for any cameras near it and then sped through the corridors. Neither the camera’s vision nor motion sensors were designed or even capable of detecting anything of Clark’s speed.

Either way, he had to hurry in his search. He began opening filing cabinets and quickly flicking through the folder name tags, to no avail.Clark arrived in yet another camera blind-spot in front of the head office. He used his hinge method successfully yet again. Once past the threshold, however his hearing picked up an oversight. He had forgotten to check inside the room for a camera as he heard its machinery whirling. In the panic, he immediately used his eye rays to fry its circuitry. He cursed under his breath and adjusted his hearing in the direction of the security office.

“Hey, Rick, the camera in the head office is gone offline. You wanna check it out?”

Standing in a sea of opened filing cabinets, Clark surveyed the room rapidly for any other possible locations.

“You think something’s up? Burglar?”

Clark noticed the pile of documents on the desk and quickly rummaged through the messy pile.

“Hardly, none of the other cameras motion sensors were spooked.”

Searching for yet more options, the drawers of the desk were flung open and the bundles of pages inside, quickly glanced.

“Yeah, but you hear about those cat burglars or people like that guy in Gotham.”

Finally, Clark felt a drawer resist his tug. It was locked. Hopefully any documents of importance would be located here. He needed to think of a way to open it without damag-

“The wonders of the internet are wasted on your generation.”

Clark couldn’t take any chances, the voice was getting close now. He gently slid the locked drawer open, forcing the lock. It revealed a neat stash of several documents.

“You can’t be too careful, in this day and age.”

He glanced through the titles, “Financial Reports, Security Issues and Health and Safety”. Though Clark would have liked to peer at the other documents to further drive in the nail, Health and Safety was his main concern at the moment. He began to flick his eyes over the document and hopefully get a general idea of its contents.

“Kid, it’s only a camera malfunction, don’t get too excited.”

No time, no time. He took out his digital camera and angled it to cover the entirety of a page. He held the camera in position as he turned the pages, rapidly snapping a photo of each page to check later.

“We’ll see, anyway I’m nearly there.” the mouthy young adult remarked through the radio, as he walked the empty corridors, a sole torch lighting his way.

“Well, if you didn’t yap so much, you’d be there sooner. Not to mention, if there was a burglar, he’d hear you a mile away.” the gruff voice crackled through the radio, currently being held by Rick, as he continued to stroll ahead.

Rick turned a corner and spotted the familiar door of the head office. He spoke into his radio again, “Okay I’m here, now.” He strolled to the door and placed the radio on his hip as he fumbled through his key-ring for the correct key.

“You remember I am on camera duty, right? So I don‘t need a commentary of what you‘re doing.” the voice remarked gruffly from Rick’s hip.

“Positive attitude breeds positive results. It’s even framed in one of these offices” the youth joked back to the head guard, as the key clicked into place, opening the office.

**

“Har de har, wise guy. Now is your burglar there?” the guard remarked as he clicked the microphone stand to reply.

The microphone crackled for a few seconds, silence.

The man stretched over the speaker again, the voice less gruff and more serious, even with a rarely seen hint of worry “Rick, you there?”.

More silence followed. The man stood up as he prepared to investigate himself. A voice suddenly crackled: “What? Sorry, I was lifting a chair over so I could check out the camera. Yeah, it’s burned out I’m afraid, probably need a specialist to come in.”

“The rest of the room okay? Nothing sparked a fire?” the guard asked, his voice now returning to its usual gruff attitude.

“Nah, it’s a bit weird, though, seeing everything so neat. It’s almost like the owner doesn’t do a tap, sorta like you.” Rick joked playfully.

“Keep ‘em coming, Rick, keep ‘em coming. Beside, it’s not like you know the meaning of neat anyway.”

The banter and friendly jests continued into the night, keeping entertainment and social contact on an otherwise lonely job. That did not matter to Clark, however. As he dashed through the empty fields and leaped back into the land of the Kents, he finally believed he had a way of helping his family and maybe even a new way of life.

Nice. I really like how you're handling this arc instead of having Clark be Superman straight away. You're building it up and it's going to be EPIC when he finally wears that suit!

Thank you for putting some development behind Clark, something even actual Superman writers won't do.

@youngjustice: Aren't we all just a tiny bit better than most comic writers? :P

@maccyd: Really well written and I have looked forward to a new chapter
