27 Miles Above Vlatava

Werner Vertigo had known from the moment he'd entered the United States of America that his life would be very different from the usual norm. When he was young his father, at that time a mere pig farmer in his homeland, had sent him to the vastly different country in an attempt to give his young son an ideal to strive towards. It had cost Werner's family almost everything they had for the trip alone, however Werner was happy to say the trip had not been wasted.

13 years had passed since the boy had visited Metropolis for the first time and by this point he had changed greatly from what he had once been. In the confines of the small cockpit he felt very uncomfortable, his cape easily causing a hazard for anyone attempting to pass by, however he had refused to part with it. Afterall... when the war started he wanted to be dressed appropriately.

"How much longer must I endure the confines of this space, Merlyn?" Count Vertigo groaned from the passenger seat. He felt a firm hand grip his shoulder and he glanced up to see the assassin staring out of the cockpit windows with a small smile upon his face.

"We should be arriving any minute now." Merlyn sighed, the man was dressed in his usual attire, pitch black body armour with a hood covering the top half of his face, a bow and quiver lay attached to his back and a metal belt lay around his waist. "Don't worry, Vertigo." He said in a calm tone while turning towards the nervous passenger. "Your country will still be there for us to conquer." Vertigo shifted in his seat slightly and tried desperately to avert his attention elsewhere. He stared out of the window closest to him and watched the other aircraft carrier directly across from them. This one was slightly different then the one that Vertigo was currently upon, Vertigo's craft had been designed for stealth and speed while the alternate carrier had been designed for the exact opposite of that.

Strength and defense.

Honestly that carrier was possibly one of the most dangerous places to be at this current moment. The reason being it was currently holding over 200 of the most dangerous beings on the planet. 146 of them were HIVE Agents equipped with highly dangerous weapons, they were simply the cannon fodder and distraction for when the fighting started, the remaining 56 individuals consisted of supervillains. Each being members of the Legion of Doom and each had been hand picked by the Legion's inner circle. They were the brute force of the mission.

"I'm bored." The teenaged mastermind known as IQ said as he leaned back in his chair. "Freakin' bored..." The brat seemed to find his repetitive words amusing and started to tap his foot on the back of the pilot's chair in front of him. "Are we there y-"

"Don't even think about it, IQ." Merlyn said suddenly causing the hair on the back of Vertigo's neck to stand up. "Moaning like this may tick off your parents, but if you try and do something like that to me I'll stab an arrow in your e-"

"Sir!" One of the pilot's from up front said over his helmet's mic. The three men turned their attention at the individual. "We're about 3 minutes away from the drop zone."

"Good." Merlyn paused for a moment. "Everyone be silent." He said to no one in particular.

"What are you doing?" IQ asked as the Assassin began to link the carrier's intercom to the alternate drop ship's own intercom. Merlyn grinned slightly.

"I'm rallying the troops." He muttered before raising his hand to instruct everyone to shut up. "Ladies and gentlemen..." Merlyn said in a slow, calm tone. "Congratulations. Every last one of you has been personally vetted and has been viewed as being of use in this little adventure. I hope each of you understand what will be required of you in this task. Today, the Legion of Doom are going to carve ourselves a place in history and conquer a foreign nation, you can all thank Count Vertigo for the huge sum of money added to your bank accounts by the way. Now the moment you arrive upon foreign soil your goals are very simple. I want you ALL to cause chaos! Destroy everything! Do what you're best at! Mark yourselves as the most powerful beings on the planet and teach the entire universe the most important rule of all." Merlyn paused for a moment to add a dramatic tone to the speech. "The Legion of Doom can take what it wants." Merlyn clicked the microphone off before adjusting the belt on his waist. "Let's go." He muttered before stepping quickly through the cockpit door and standing next to one of the emergency exits in the plane's side. Vertigo and IQ joined him.

"....Merlyn." Vertigo said with a hint of nervousness in his voice. "How are you going to arrive at our destination?" He asked. "You're not wearing a parachute."

"Oh, he is." IQ said with a small chuckle. Merlyn smiled and tapped the metal belt on his waist.

"Parachutes are too conventional." He muttered before leaping out of the plane. Vertigo took a deep breath before leaping out after him. His cape billowing in the wind.

With a grunt Blockbuster pushed the last of the metal canisters off the carrier, a wave of 600 projectiles thundering towards earth. Grunting he turned away from the edge as sirens sounded from the castle below accompanied with AA fire and missiles. As the first projectiles slammed down into the ground several of the canisters were shot down, shrapnel raining down on the defences and the men huddled behind them.

Written by ImpurestCheese

“We've made landfall.” A man covered in black and white stripes announced as gunshots rang out, the bullets dropping to the floor before reaching out and sending the barbed wire rolling back towards the trench, the men inside being crushed by the wire. Behind him several of the canisters popped open to reveal an army of HIVE agents and meta-humans. With a unified roar the masses started charging towards the line of fortified bunkers, machine gun fire and rockets whizzing out of the defensive line as the palace guard held their ground.

“What the hell is this?!” Tar Pit groaned his voice bubbling as the bunker in front of him exploded in a haze of radioactive gas, the armoured form of Neutron emerging from the wreckage. “I didn't sign up to be in Call of Duty and storm the beaches!!”

“You think we have a choice?” Vortex told him as he deflected a TOW rocket fired at him, the warhead flying off to the left and detonating against the fortified palace wall. “With those two here we have no choice to go forward.” He added before gesturing to Merlyn and the armoured form of his bodyguard the Persuader, her atomic axe glowing above the flashes of gunfire.

“No.” Tar Pit sighed as he looked up towards one of the palace’s forward artillery positions, the guns silent save for the flashes from the mobile anti-air cannons as they were harried from above by numerous ariel combatants. With the soldiers in the bunkers dealt with the attacking force surged forward, a few guards running ahead of them towards a second defensive trench.

“Keep moving forward!!” Merlyn bellowed as he released an arrow up towards one of the artillery positions, the projectile striking a camouflaged sniper taking aim at the assault force. “If you stop, if you turn tail and run, then your families will be punished for your actions!”

Speeding up the attack force breached a second line of barbed wire and stopped as red flares rocketed up from the bunkers on the other side. Seconds later a barrage of mortars rained down on the villains, explosive shells showering sparks into the ditch and catching the fuel alight. What had been a charge to victory has turned into a mass of screaming men and women kept at bay by 50m of burning trenches. To make matters worse the bunkers and tanks on the other side were beginning to train their guns on the massed army now unable to proceed.

“Air support clear out those bunkers!!” Merlyn bellowed down the communication link as the machine guns mowed down the front line of HIVE troopers. “And somebody get us across that gap!!” He ordered as four metahumans came diving in towards the bunkers, the roof mounted AA guns traversing upwards and locking onto their targets.

“I don’t see how we can cross without…” The motorcycle leather clad form of Thrilldevil gasped before a massive man with skin of steel muscled his way to the front and slammed a fist through the speaker’s helmet, his body turning to steel. With a snort he pushed the man into the ditch and looked down before smiling.

“What is it Reichsmark?” Merlyn asked as the Human Flying Fish was shot down by the AA guns, his body slamming into the concrete structure as the villain following him, the Silver Banshee got ready for her run on the defences.

“Get me someone stretchy.” Reichsmark hissed, his words barley audible over the scream Silver Banshee unleashed, the crew of the tank she had targeted al scrabbling out in a mad bid to escape. Seconds later the sound of protest could be heard and the Persuader pushed a gaudily dressed man to the forefront.

“Yo-Yo your sacrifice will be remembered.” Merlyn stated as Yo-Yo looked at the Persuader and then the trench before stretching himself over the gap, his skin charring as he latched onto the barbed wire on the other side. With a smirk Reichsmark slammed his boot down on the human bridge’s back and watched as it turned to steel, the remnant of the army storming towards the faltering defences on the other side.

“Remind me to talk to you after this is done.” Merlyn whispered to Reichsmark before walking across the ad hoc bridge. “Command we're past the second line of defences,” He stated as Man Bat slammed into a guard tower before flying off, a struggling soldier in his jaws. “How are our sappers faring Dr IQ?”

**

Tapeworm kept boring through the earth, powering towards the smell of leaky wine caskets and centuries of sewage oblivious to the battle raging above. His unit had been dropped behind the main assault force and had been tasked to act as shock troopers on arrival in the palace. It was crucial that the current monarch be forced to flee early on if Vertigo’s coup was to be successful.

“Tapeworm how far off the palace are you?” IQ asked over the communications link that Slipknot was lugging behind him.

“Just shy of three quarters of a mile. As long as soil composition stays the same then we should break the surface in ten minutes.”

“If you can pick up the pace.” IQ sighed sarcastically as Tapeworm looked at the five criminals and twelve HIVE agents walking in his wake.

“I'll see if I can push it to five.” Tapeworm hissed as he sped up, dirt being thrown up at a quicker rate then before.

**

Tar Pit almost felt sorry for the crew of the T72 as Blue Moon swept down and threw the vehicle clean over the palace, the lunar rays powering her strength to extreme levels. Turning his attention back to the guard tower he was standing by and unleashed a foul barrage of smoke and steam that sent the snipers housed inside chocking and falling to the ground.

“We're almost at the main courtyard.” Vortex yelled to him as he ripped the fortified gates off their hinges and tossed them away. Charging in the first wave of villains was almost decimated as the tanks and massed guards inside opened fire. The second wave had more luck, the bodies of the first acting as cover from the defenders. The action was so fast paced that Tar Pit could barely keep track of what was going on. To his left a T72 exploded in a radioactive blast, while the defenders before him burst into flame. One thing was clear, they were winning.

**

Tapeworm veered upwards and crashed through the concrete floor into the palace’s wine cellar. Slithering out of his tunnel he moved to one side as the shock unit emerged, all fresh faced and ready for combat.

“We're out.” He told IQ as the men who had followed him ascended the stairs to the kitchens, gunfire already sounding above them. “We'll radio in once the helicopter is in play.” He added as he slithered after his comrades up into the kitchen. The room was clear already and the reinforced oak doors into the ballroom were smashed open. As he followed the sound of carnage he saw the men clustered round a suited official, his body hung from the chandelier.

“The Queen, tell us where she is Mr Prime Minister.” A woman dressed in red purred, a serrated blade covering her hand pressed against the man’s throat.

“I will not tell you where her Majesty is.” The Prime Minster grunted as his torturer cocked her head and backed off only to let a small man with multiple arms scuttle up to him and sink his teeth into his neck.

“It doesn’t matter.” The woman sighed as the shock troops kicked down the doors to the atrium, the sound of gunfire resuming as the guards on the second floor opened fire. “We will find her.”

**

The last of the palace guard fell clutching their weapons as their executor fired all six of his guns, the bullets cutting them down like ripe maize. Clicking the safeties on Wolf watched as Merlyn walked over to the locked down security checkpoint, titanium doors blocking any further progress.

“Where is the base commander?” He asked the men and women dotted around the courtyard.

“Here.” A wheezing voice stated as a green gelatinous man spat out a half digested soldier.

“Damm you Bagman, the codes will be useless if he had them.” Merlyn sighed. “Where are my hackers?!”

“At the rear with the medical staff.” Neutron hissed as he placed his hand on a partially melted tank. “Call it in and get them up here.”

“Yes thank you, I know what I have to do!!” Merlyn snapped as Tar Pit crouched down next to Vortex, the later pulling shrapnel out of another man’s leg.

“So less than half of us made it here. Can’t understand why they didn't just drop the heavies’ right on the palace and be done with it.”

“Vertigo’s plan has to have the Palace Guard look as if it could hold us off, at least for a bit. As soon as the Queen is captured he leads the rest of the army in and arrests us.” Vortex explained. “Makes him look like a hero and keeps the people in line.”

“I can't believe I made it this far.” The man he was operating on stammered. “Me the Condiment King. Ow hey be more careful, I don't want to lose a leg to you pair of butchers.”

“You prefer to walk back to the LZ and let the Crime Doctor look at it.” Tar Pit sighed as he cauterized the wounds on the Condiment King’s legs. “I didn't think so.” He added as two technicians dressed in flak jackets over their usual costumes walked over to the door. With a few angry gestures at the door from Merlyn, the pair of them got to work, hooking up a micro computer to the keypad before unscrewing the device. In just a few minutes the door unlocked and swung open slightly.

"Wreck it and their defences go off line." IQ ordered over the communications link as Mr Nitro slipped inside. There was no sound save the continued clatter of the AA guns for a few seconds and then an almighty explosion, fire leaking out of the checkpoint and then silence, the spotlights, artillery and sirens all going offline. And then came a cheer, the palace was finally in the clutches of the Legion of Doom

**

The rooftop door burst open as Miss Army Knife and a few escort HIVE agents stormed towards the helicopter, it’ rotors already warmed up as a palace guard bundled a young woman dressed in a suit and flack jacket into the cargo bay.

“I can wrangle it from here.” Slipknot stated before Tapeworm steadied his hand.

“We have it covered.” He hissed before watching as three figures took off from the ground and streaked towards the helicopter. Before it could even leave the palace grounds the aircraft stopped, its rotors held tight in the magnetic grip of Vortex, the pilot desperately pressing the buttons and levers in a vain attempt to keep the helicopter moving.

“Your up Lyns.” Vortex stated as the insectile form of Firefly jetted alongside the aircraft and fired up an acetylene torch, the burning tip cutting around the cargo bay door. With a cackle the mad arsonist pulled back, a breaching charge on the side exploding as the third figure moved in, gunfire ripping out of the helicopter and off the attacker’s crimson metallic shell.

“This is the Marauder.” The crimson armoured figure hissed as he pulled the seat containing the Queen out of the cargo hold. “We have Checkmate, it’s in your hands now Count Vertigo.”

“That’s King Vertigo to you.” Vertigo announced as he stood outside the capitals main barracks, the auxiliary armed forces scrambling for their trucks and armoured personnel carriers in a desperate bid to defend the Queen. Pulling on a set of military fatigues he hopped aboard the lead APC and waved his arms for the armoured convoy to roll towards the smoking palace.

@redleader1: He cut up a helicopter, it was Marauder that did the butt kicking, still it was a team effort. :-)

Thanks for the comment

I wanted to read some of the 90's T-Bolts for some time now.

@waezi2: that is stupidly awesome 90's, but the 90's were not awesome. Lifeld need I go on.

What about the Thunderbolts, the JLA, the New Warriors, Kyle Rayner, Starman, Dixon's Batman-related stuff, several comics written by Mark Waid(including Kingdom Come), Busiek's Avengers and Carnage?

@waezi2: I love dixons batman run and most of dc in the 90's its just that when I say something looks 90's I mean lifeld or if its so stupidly awesome then its like brute force (cyborg animals fighting each other).

I'm just more of a Bronze Age (mostly 70's fan) so EXTREME stuff is not interesting to me that often. Plus dixons batman run, his robin run, and azrael are writen like Bronze Age stories more than 90's stuff.

Just binge read the entire series. Some very well done work here. Liking how you're developing some usually underrated characters. This feels like a series where anything can happen, which is a good thing. It's good how you've made connections to each of your own series, making this feel like part of a living world.

@maccyd: Thanks for the comment! But quick question!

How did we tie into the Flash? Sorry it's just you said we set up ties to all our own titles... however... I don't recall tying anything into the Flash.

@impurestcheese: No problem.

@waezi2: Will do, I'm trying to work my way towards reading anything that I missed when I was off CV.

@tommythehitman: As Waez said, when the inner circle was distracting Flash. Also, I was mainly thinking of the connections to your Green Arrow run for you.
