Well if they never spammed or trolled then they need to earn the trust. So I like the restriction.

Members have noticed the several spambot attacks we've been facing on a daily basis:  Odd message's..  They always target the most recent News Articles, but they also spam the walls & blog posts of members too.  As these spambots continue to find a way to bypass the IP Ban then Comic Vine has been forced to take steps to counter them in different ways.  Sadly, it means that all new genuine members (and RPGers, we know you guys are stuggling too) will have to wait a few days before they are able to post unlimited amounts in the forums.

Is this unnecessary?  No.  It is a necessary step to ensure the smooth running of Comic Vine.  It this permanent?  Hopefully not... but we're still under attack from these spambots.

It's a necessary prevention method. And you guys know me, I'm an RPGer, I feel your pain with alts. But it's going to be worth it in the long haul and hopefully isn't permanent.

I'd like to add that we really are sorry that all new members & new RPG 'alts' are struggling.  Please be patient & understand that we are looking into other methods to combat this end these spam attacks.

Of course it is, the bigger the site gets the more spambots will show up, followed by pointless hackers and pornsite spiders.

What is the new user cap and how long does it last?

Like I say, it's not an ideal method.  Hopefully we'll have a better way around this problem soon.  We are sorry that people are experiencing a reduced Comic Vine experience.  But hopefully they'll see that it's worth sticking around for the full blown unlimited version.

Is this impeding the users who pay for accounts as well?

@Lance Uppercut: Honestly, I don't know.  However, common sense dictates that it doesn't... since spambots aren't going to pay for their spam accounts.  Then again, I doubt that many new members will pump money into a new website without experiencing the free version first.

One would hope that it doesn't, but over sights like that are common. Obviously if someone even starts off with the monthly membership, and finds they can only post like, four or five times before being cut off, it's going to be a massive detriment to the customer base.

@Lance Uppercut: I understand your concern, but it is pretty rare for someone to pay out for a website that they are completely new to.

@The Dark Huntress: If someone is using their Multi-Pass then they should (magic word 'should) be fine, a bit like with their Wiki Points.

@xerox-kitty: Not really. I've signed up for websites with sponsorships simply because I'd browsed the material without an account and enjoyed it. Most of CV's members got it because they'd been long term members, but it's not odd for someone to think "Eh, five bucks? Chump change."

@Lance Uppercut: Sponsored memberships don't involve money.  They're free memberships where sponsors have their links plastered all over them.

I understand your concern, but now you're just arguing for the sake of arguing.  DH has already said she's going to test the process using her multi-pass.  She'll keep everyone informed of what happens.

Not what I was referring too. I was referencing paid account, not sponsored memberships. Though if I could get sponsors to plaster adds on my page it wouldn't be so bad. And I'm not concerned. Obviously, I'm in no rush to pay for anything on Comicvine. I'm just noting that is it's detrimental to those who do, it's a horrible system that could have been done far better by implementing something like a Captcha or whatever it is most sites have to avoid bots in the first place.

Five times a day? I'm pretty sure that's less than I've posted in a day. While this may stunt the odd messages, that means they still get five shots at posting odd messages or what have you while new people are most likely are going to be turned off by only being able to post five times a day. At that, what constitutes a person not being a new member anymore? Is it post count? Because I know if I was only able to post five times a day and had to work up my post count to gain the ability to post more I wouldn't stick around.

I don't think it's fair to punish all new people and their privileges based on an increase of spambots. I think there could possibly be a better solution without turning off possible future useful members of the community.

Not that I care, though. Because I don't. Because I can post more than five times a day.

Just tested it out over on Vice. I was able to post more than five times....but my account was created before this was instated, so I don't know how accurate that is, even though I had never posted before today.

Yeah. Just tried posting again and it didn't work for me. I'm getting the flood protect. So it does effect paid members.

I recently made a new account with this problem but I just wanted a quick question.

I was wondering if the website realized IP addresses and could know already that we aren't spambots? Or do spambots originate from IP addresses and stick on our computer like a virus or something?

PM Darkchild for details, Nova. I think you have to continue to use the account for a certain number of days to prove that you're invested and not a spambot.

I understand the need for the system, and that it's less than perfect, but a bit more explanation of it would be nice. I had to go to Google to even find this thread - I had no idea what was going on.

It would also be nice if getting 1000 wiki points (the wiki points needed to no longer need approval of wiki changes) would also lift the forums restriction. I first got into the site via the wiki, then decided to check out the forums - it would be nice to not be treated like a spammer all over again. Perhaps having this method would also inspire people who want to open new accounts to contribute to the wikis, thus making them better.

I think this is fair. However, I don't believe there is any connection between the forums and the wiki, as far as coding goes.

If me and the other mods had a dollar for every user who complained about this...we'd be rich (well, not rich, but it'd be a decent increase in our current wages :P )

Honestly a good method to get rid of the restriction sooner might be a vouch system. If experienced user A knows newbie M they could vouch that they are a real person and not a spam bot and remove the restriction. If M abuses the system with spam then A becomes untrusted as well. Those without someone to vouch for them simply get the same restriction that exists today. Some site I used to visit did that and it worked well. You basically have a tree of trust that 999/1000 times keeps bots out.

No. Earn your stripes. We all did. I know we all want to come in guns a'blazin' but the current system is what is best for the integrity of the site.

exactly! well...not ALL of us did that, but most of the users a little bit prior to this thread's creation did.

HOWEVER, the point is that this system has worked for 2 years. And for the time being we aren't going to change it (we'll let you know if anything changes, but nothing is going to happen right now). Is this system perfect? of course not. After the update there has been some lack of communication of why new users can't post, but trust me when I say the moderators and staff are aware.

Any new users can pm one of the moderators (emphasis on one) if they have any questions, but I'm going to lock this thread at this time...

This post is really old, time to let it go I think (though I was also upset when I was limited at the beginning)
