I think it is an IE problem, as the IE7 I have to use at work does the same thing (just like how using the Bold & Italic buttons will make the highlighted text disappear).
But like Aztek suggested, switch to something like Firefox or Safari. You'll find that most of the internet bugs & viruses are designed for IE as well, so a different browser should be healthier for your PC :)
