Fan Art Galleries - Editing & Tools

All right, I've now seen at least two characters with not one, but TWO Fan Art galleries. When is enough, enough? Is this a legitimate use of the Costumes/Logos section?

I don't mind a little fan art here and there, especially if it's good, but does it really have anything meaningful to do with the comic book character or is it really just a cheap way to get more points?

I'm hoping to get some idea of whether or not I should start to delete these Fanart Galleries when I see them...

I thought everybody did it. I also see toy sections, are those not allowed either?

I don't particularly like Toy sections, but I don't bother about them either way, because there's no way someone's going to post 20-40 images of toys like they can with other people's fan art. ;)

Seriously, I have a gigantic amount of Penance/Hollow fan art, but I don't include it because I don't consider it relevant to the character; there's only a few fan art pieces in the entire Hollow galleries section.

Well I just wanna say for the record, there's like 119 fan art images in Gambit's gallery and it wasnt me.

I actually don't see what's so wrong with fan-art galleries so long as the pictures are clean, y'know? Just for the record, I don't put up fan art and if it's unusual, I normally check with a staff type chappy first.

LOL, not quite sure that's what this thread's for, but thanks. You're the one who gave me the idea for this avatar in the first place.

Back on topic, what's defined as fan-art then? If an artist does an image but doesn't sell it, simply puts it on the web, does that make it fan art even if they're a well recognised comic artist?

I think the rule with fan art is the same as regular art. If it's good it stays, if it's rubbish delete it.

No, you can tell, go look at Gambits page. Fan art is something a fan drew, like say Barguest drew a picture of Alucard, thats fan art.

That's the rule as far as I know. Only other thing is that fan art is generally in its own gallery and separate from "real" pictures.

Every image in the Gambit fanart gallery is crappy or worse. I'm assuming that a Gambit fan have uploaded them, but why would you want to upload that crap for a character you like?

As long as its in a separate gallery I don't mind it at all, same with commissions. I'd worry more about plagiarism and those silly encoded things as far as point whoring goes than the +2 people get from adding a pic. I'm more irked by the many cases that people created new separate galleries with no discernible difference from the main galleries seemingly to exploit the fact that you get more points when you add a new gallery than adding to an existing gallery.

I had no idea you got points for adding a gallery.

Thats actually why I haven't brought it up before because I'd rather that not get out there so its exploited more.

It's not like you get a lot from it. It's like 4 points for a gallery as opposed to just 2 for the picture.

Ya know though, that explains alot, the part about getting points for gallery's. I saw somebody made a list page and got over a 1000 points for it. I made a list page and got a little over a hundred and thought wtf, but looking now they made a gallery for each person on the list were I only had one gallery and put everybody in it.

Hmm, you all bring up some good points. I just thought something that someone drew because they were a fan of the character, scanned it into their Deviant Art gallery, and then had it stolen by someone else and posted here would be a problem.

But since it seems it's not... I'll select the good Penance/Hollow fan images now from my collection. ^.^

Lots of great Hollow/Penance fan art (and also, let's face it, anything from my collection that didn't make me cringe by looking at it...) in the fifth Hollow gallery.

IMO this was the only good fanart in the Hollow gallery. Ross Campbell if i'm not mistaken.

I have also seen some of the fan art uploaded in some character galleries, but I don't prefer them because of legal issues. Like someone before, people might've just stolen them off deviantART. People use Creative Commons licences now so they have to be more careful.

Does this rule still stand or has it been changed? I want to know because there is quite a bit of fan art in Dick Grayson's "Nightwing New 52" gallery. Is fan art now allowed in galleries other than the fan art gallery or are those images not supposed to be in that gallery?

Fan art should not be in galleries other than that titled 'fan art'.

Ughnn.. No, it's not changed. Someone is either too stupid to know the difference between Fan Art & official at or they have purposefully littered the gallery to gain points (aka Point Whoring). So I've removed the New 52 gallery.

It's been my experience that Fan Art is generally accepted now and there was never much resistance to it anyway (so I gave up and joined the crowd, years ago, lol). I guess just keep it to Fan Art subgalleries and try to only add the good stuff.
