They are beings of unspeakable power. Former Avengers and cosmic entities that have defended Earth from the far reaches of the cosmos. This December, they return from outer space to embark on the adventure of a lifetime – going to college! Today, Marvel is pleased to announce STARBRAND & NIGHTMASK #1 – a brand new ongoing series from critically acclaimed writer Greg Weisman (Star Wars: Kanan) and rising star artist Domo Stanton (Deadpool)!

“Nightmask is the Herald (and conscience) for Earth’s Starbrand (i.e. it’s Planetary Defense Mechanism),” says series writer Greg Weisman in an interview with Marvel.com. “He’s been tutoring Starbrand in his powers, and they really are best friends. In fact, each is practically the other’s ONLY friend.”

Imbued with cosmic powers, they’ve battled alongside some of the universe’s greatest champions. And repelled invasions from destructive alien forces. But nothing will prepare them for the likes of class registration, choosing a major and midterms. What meal plan will cover a cosmic metabolism? Can two all-powerful entities share a dorm room the size of a roach motel? Can you safely teleport to Mars after partying all night long at your first kegger?

“Kevin (Starbrand) is actually very reluctant to go back to college. (His last stint didn’t end well, to say the least.) But Adam (Nightmask) insists that they both attend college, because Kevin needs to reconnect with humanity. After all, if he’s going to protect the planet, Kevin needs to care about its inhabitants.”

This December, it takes more than superpowers to be a hero. Witness the rise of two galactic saviors as Weisman & Stanton bring you a titanic twosome in STARBRAND & NIGHTMASK #1!

Not interested in the suggested direction this looks like it's going to take. Too bad because I liked these new characters.

Nice. I hope they remain the way they were characterized in Avengers. I liked seeing Starbrand discovering and struggling with his new power.

The color scheme gives me a Nightwing and Flamebird vibe

"writer Greg Weisman"

I'm there. I loved the Spectacular Spiderman which I thought was brilliant and I still can't believed it got cancelled.

Huh, not sure what to make of this. I would totally be happy about a Star brand and Nightmask series for adults, but the art style suggests it's more kid oriented. BUT, if it's going to be dealing with stuff like how to fight bad guys when you're hung over from a keg party, that suggests it's not all ages. They need to decide who's going to read this.

@sprior93: No, they was to much X title by the past, much like to day they have to much Avengers title.

Is a good thing to see B or C list character having their on title with a talented but underestimed writter take care of them.

The characters look awesome, but I'm not sure about the idea of going to college. I might check this out just for the art, though.

I get the feeling once Hickman is gone most if not every Marvel book will be this type of tone

I understand the thought process behind this. The new Starbrand and Nightmask got a bit of love during the Hickman era and this will capitalise on that while providing a book for young adult readers. My worry is there was no overlap between the two markets. Hickman writes unforgivably for those who have the patience for his long stories why this seems more akin to the current Nova title.

I wish Marvel the best of luck with this one. Hopefully this book finds its audience.

That's what I hope too... the art makes it seem like it;ll be more of a romp than a serious series

Yess!!! I was totally upset at them dying battling the Beyonders(although they were awesome during the battles and journeys) I look forward to seeing how they were brought back from the dead, and if they are coming back, could e possibly(if not jokingly) see a cameo of ex nihilo and Abyss showing up to help them in college

...does this mean Hyperion and 616 Thor can return then?

I knew these two were too interesting to be thrown aside!

It reads like a CBS sitcom pitch

I'm glad these two aren't going to vanish into obscurity post-Hickman without an honest shot, though.

Now I just need Black Swan in my life.

I'll admit that some of my enthusiasm left after reading the premise, but I'll still try it.

@drthanos91: Hyperion is already confirmed to return in the new Squadron Supreme ongoing. I think Thor is coming back too if the promo art for the new Thor ongoing is any indication.

@drthanos91: @z3ro180: I too was thinking this might mean the return of the other Multiversal Avengers as well. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

@lemuel15: However, there are like twenty different versions of Hyperion. It could be a different one.

I enjoy most of Greg Weisman's work in the animated sphere from Gargoyles and Spectacular Spider-Man to Young Justice and Season 1 of Star Wars Rebels. And Marvel getting him to write Kanan: The Last Padawan and this is just another example of Marvel securing new and acclaimed talent away from the competition. Having said that, I can't help feeling that this announcement represents a massive tonal shift away from the characters Star-Brand and Nighthawk were in Hickman's Avengers run. And whilst I wasn't a big fan of that, this Star-Brand was kind of interesting. This scenario of two planetary defenders enrolling in the challenges of college sounds pretty cliche and something you'd find in a sappy sitcom, I'm not gonna lie.

@drthanos91: Hyperion's already been confirmed to appear in a Squadran Supreme series written by James Robinson in post Secret Wars Marvel and Thor appears on that cover spread to Aaron's third Thor series in the last 3 years.

I like the character well enough and it looks like they are going for a red hood/ arsenal bromance kind of vibe but I am REALLY not feeling the artwork
