SUPERMAN AMERICAN ALIEN #1

(W) Max Landis (A) Nick Dragotta (CA) Ryan Sook

Hollywood screenwriter and Eisner Award nominee Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN) joins forces with top comics artists including Jock, Francis Manapul and Jae Lee to bring you SUPERMAN: AMERICAN ALIEN, a 7-issue miniseries chronicling the life of Clark Kent and his development into the archetypal hero he will eventually become. But these are not the stories of the iconic "Superman" as you know him, but of the soft-spoken, charming, often-funny Kansas farm-boy behind the Man of Steel. With the tone of each issue ranging from heartwarming and simple, to frighteningly gritty and violent, to sexy, sun-kissed and funny, SUPERMAN: AMERICAN ALIEN is unlike anything you've seen before.

In this first issue, superstar artist Nick Dragotta (East of West, Fantastic Four) illustrates the story of Jonathan and Martha Kent as they struggle to deal with their 12-year-old son's latest quirk-he's been floating up into the air, sometimes hundreds of feet!

Very interested, especially with that other cover of infant Superman. Little bit unsettling.

For once we have the same reaction to something, even if for different reasons.

Superman couldn't fly back in Action Comics but now he's doing it as a kid?

@nightfang: I respectfully disagree. If we go by the preview, Jonathan is scared shitless of Clark. As far as he's concerned Clark may as well be one of the albino kids from Village Of The Damned.

The baby cover shows us, that, while Clark may resemble an earth child, he is something else entirely.

Pass.

DC's lack of consistent quality Superman comics has made me weary. I can't take any more risks just to be disappointed.

If it is good, great I will buy in trade.

It has very good reviews so far but knowing Landis, this will be a Superman book only in name. I would advice patience and trade-waiting since every issue will have a very different tone.

Anyway, Landis, I will buy one issue, if it is good I may consider buying the trade but so far I'm not liking what I see.

@dernman: I don't know, I'm not buying it based on Landis' track record and his approach to writing Superman feeling all kinds of wrong. The reviews seem very pandered to Landis rather than taking a more critical approach to what he's done. Still, this is nothing compared to what else Landis has lined up for his edgy teen Clark Kent comic book. Even the advertising says it's not a Superman comic.

@dernman: The advertising sentence or the lack of critique on Landis?

@lvenger: Landis's track record and the blowing smoke concerning Landis. The advertising seems to me more a part of Landis's own hype their repeating..

Really looking forward to this!

Love that Ryan Sook cover ... it's a shame he's not doing all the artwork for the mini series ... oh well, still looks good

So Landis wrote American Ultra and now we have American Alien. I wonder if his favorite movies include American Hustle or American History X?

The same as it has been for years and will be for the foreseeable future.

DC Comics wants more of your money.
