Did Thanos just reality punch with his face?

#4 Posted by mikeclark1982 (424 posts) - - Show Bio

why marvel... WHY? WHY? i swear, you can not look a day online without seeing marvel pump out a new event to try to get more money. STOP IT! can we have one year where we just have self contained storylines?!?! heck, AvX was boring and did not warrant a 75 DOLLAR hardcover which is now being split into two different trade paperbacks which will be horrifically overpriced!

#5 Posted by G-Man (37016 posts) - - Show Bio

@Cafeterialoca: Superboy Prime had to use his fist. Thanos uses his face.

#6 Posted by G-Man (37016 posts) - - Show Bio

@mikeclark1982: By the way, this issue is FREE.

#7 Posted by Danial79 (2352 posts) - - Show Bio

Awesome. Interesting to see Ex Nihilo in there.

@mikeclark1982: i just wish they'd wait until Age of Ultron is over before advertising this.

Yeah, Marvel. Stop making money, ya dumb business.

Seriously, I get event fatigue, too. They sell, though, We're also overlooking a point here.

A Hickman-helmed COSMIC themed event? Are you effing essing me? That's why I'm excited. I'm just about sick to death of the movies informing the comics. IF the movie-goers are too lazy to read comics, then let that be that. Stop changing all our ish, Marvel.

THANOS comes back, in a COSMIC event with the GAUNTLET? HMM! I WONDER WHY!

#10 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1504 posts) - - Show Bio

I will say this, if the next event is Thanos getting the gauntlet again....that's uninspired. Why not try something new? Something more creative?

Recycling an already popular plot isn't going to bring anything new to the table. I mean, are we going to have Civil War 2 if the Marvel movies are thinking about a Civil War film?

#11 Edited by redscare (462 posts) - - Show Bio

I have faith in Hickman to make this into more a recycled event.

#12 Posted by sparty-dbq (822 posts) - - Show Bio

I hope Thanos yells "OH YEAH" as he busts through reality like a football team running through a paper banner.

@mikeclark1982: Like you said, Marvel does all these events for money, and it works. Every issue of a major event is always the top seller every month, and they're in an industry that's fighting to keep it's head above water, so they gotta do what they gotta do. And honestly, the only thing I don't like about major events is how regular ongoing books have to break from their own storylines to tie into them. Thankfully, Age of Ultron looks like it's mostly breaking from that trend, so if I didn't feel like following it, I won't be forced to anyway by reading my regular crop of books. If this does too, then I couldn't care less. Go nuts, Marvel.

Looks good.

#14 Posted by LubeMan (1067 posts) - - Show Bio

Wow, a lot of bitching here

#15 Posted by Outside_85 (9649 posts) - - Show Bio

Let me ask, how many suspected this was going to happen when the big heads of the Illuminate decided they would remake the Infinity Gauntlet?

That said, it's news like these (announcing an event when it's predecessor hasn't even started yet) that makes me appreciate those books that stay out of events.

I'm still trying to get over Spider-Man being dead. Oh wait, he's not DEAD dead? So he is "Haunt"ing Doc Spock? And is it time for Age of Ultron or did I miss that? And I should clear all this up before the summer time happenings in Spider-Man aka a return to Spider-Island or some-such. And here I thought it was all about Marvel "NOW"..............(or is it The Heroic Age?)

#17 Posted by Mercy_ (92921 posts) - - Show Bio

And so begins the age of Thanos.

With Hickman writing it wont be bad

Oh Snap! Thanos is Back!

#27 Posted by mk111 (3141 posts) - - Show Bio

As long as Thanos is cool, and not a chump again...

#28 Posted by MrArrogant (149 posts) - - Show Bio

I saw the teaser with Thanos' face and just groaned, then I scrolled and saw Hickman's name and almost backflipped with joy. Hickman is able to pull off big events and make them feel properly epic, like an event should. His FF run (especially forever) really felt like an event book, while being just a self contained story, so an official Johnathan Hickman penned cosmic event is probably the best thing I've heard in a while. I'm very heavily event fatigued, but this has convinced me to give marvel one last chance.

@HushoftheWind: Didn't work out so well last time he tried.

NIce I'm down for this and this issue is free!!!

#31 Edited by ThanoStomp (793 posts) - - Show Bio

Awesome. However, I do hope this isn't just a re-tooling of the Infinity Gauntlet arc. That was an all-time great and shouldn't be piled on with some hacked up, 2.0 version of the story. I hope this is something new. They'd better get Thanos right.

For something new, it would be cool if Thanos was trying to take over an entire dimension. Put him up against a ruler of a dimension like Cyttorak, Nightmare or Thog, and see how/if he can become the absolute ruler of that dimension. Then take that dimension and its resources and use it against Earth's dimension.

But as the title is Infinity, it will likely have to do with the gems or the infinity well.

#32 Posted by mk111 (3141 posts) - - Show Bio

I guess the Illuminati might get a big role in this.

#33 Posted by Teerack (7156 posts) - - Show Bio

@mikeclark1982: Hopefully this will be like the other infinity events and just a very well written short self contained 6 issue series.

#34 Posted by entropy_aegis (15456 posts) - - Show Bio

Oh God I hope they do something new with Thanos instead of giving him a glowing orb of Infinite power or a flashy gauntlet that could destroy the universe.

#35 Posted by mk111 (3141 posts) - - Show Bio

@entropy_aegis:

I hope that he keeps his character development this time. Its not so much that I don't want him to do the same thing because its repetitive. I don't want him to do the same thing because I would hope that he has learned his lesson by now.

Unfortunately comics these days are dictated by status quo.

Great now I have to spend more money when the event comes out.

#38 Posted by V_Scarlotte_Rose (6474 posts) - - Show Bio

I really hope this event is short and doesn't tie into series I buy. I'm already going to be getting Age Of Ultron and was hoping there'd be a good gap before another event starts. It'd be nice if virtually every Marvel title wasn't £3.99 too.

I'll see what the plot is before considering it. I'm not a big fan of Jim Cheung, so the story'll have to be good.

#39 Posted by mk111 (3141 posts) - - Show Bio

@entropy_aegis:

Yeah, I suppos you're right. Its just that after reading Marvel Universe: The End, I was very pleased with the development that Thanos got.

And then Assemble wrecked it. I hope this rectifies that.

is not good enough to make me buy a decompressed event which is being redundant. That's how I would finish that sentence. Now if it's only 5 or 6 issues sure.

I've always wondered why comic companies haven't gone the way of Magazines. Add a few more Ads to get revenue to increase either the book size or to decrease the pricing. Could even to banner advertisements like DC/WB does with their covers. And they could also get additional revenue from digital comics by similarly adding a few Ads unless you have say a premium membership to Comixology then the comic companies would get some of the premium membership revenue. Just a thought.

OT: This should be fun, but since Marvel has made every book an X-Men/Avengers title, every Story Arc will now include similar titles. This means instead of nice small stories in each book, you get the grand cross-overs that force customers to buy additional titles. If I'm not mistaken they have 3 Arcs planned so far this year.

I hope I'm wrong. I'm probably going to skip Age of Ultron so I might be more interested once this starts up. I will say if I had to pick a writer for an event it Hickman would probably be number 1 on my list.

#47 Posted by Lvenger (20868 posts) - - Show Bio

For the first time in a very long time, I'm actually interested in a Marvel event. Thanos, Hickman and cosmic stuff makes for a wicked combination. As long as Thanos is revitalised (and Richard Rider is brought back) I'm tentatively optimistic about this. Looks better than Age of Ultron already.

I've just noticed that none of the $2.99 titles have 'free digital copies', but most of the $3.99 ones do. No extra story, no extra advertising, so it seems that 'free' digital copy, is actually a dollar in disguise. Maybe if they didn't include the digital copies, and just made them available for those who actually wanted them, they could cut the prices down. They probably wouldn't though. Better to just charge everyone whether they want it or not.

What's the third arc? Age Of Ultron, Infinity, and...?

#49 Posted by haydenclaireheroes (9204 posts) - - Show Bio

I am not sure if I am going to like this story arc, but at least the first bit of it is free

#50 Posted by fACEmelter88 (613 posts) - - Show Bio

Seriously awesome but dumb...Age of Ultron hasn't even begun and they're already talking about another big event...damn give it a rest.
