Many of us are still longing for the return of Richard Rider as Nova. What was a surprise was seeing a new Nova at the beginning of AVENGERS VS X-MEN. With the new character, Sam Alexander, we had no idea what his story was or how he became a member of the Nova Corps. In AVX, he even mentioned saving Earth before. Viewers of the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series have an idea what he might be like but we still don't know where he came from.

That should be answered in the upcoming NOVA #1. Marvel has released a new preview for the series set to be released next month.

Marvel is pleased to present your first look at NOVA #1 from the chart-topping, award-winning creative team of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness! You met Sam Alexander, the all-new Nova, in the pages of last year’s blockbuster hit Avengers VS X-Men—but what is his secret origin? How is he connected to the Guardians of the Galaxy? And just why is Sam the only one worthy to carry on the legacy of the Nova Corps? These answers reveal shocking secrets about the Marvel Universe and help set the stage for the biggest comic book event of the year!

This February, Jeph Loeb & Ed McGuinness bring the Marvel Universe face to face with Sam Alexander in Nova #1!

So Sam Alexander is going to Hill Valley High?

#2 Posted by CaptainMexico (65 posts) - - Show Bio

Without his suit on, he kinda looks like a skinny Superboy.

@Don_Jay: Exactly what I was thinking.

#5 Posted by DrLove (41 posts) - - Show Bio

well at least i can read about Gamora again.. i hope for the best but dont expect much.

#6 Posted by MyComicStoreDotNET (46 posts) - - Show Bio

Not a fan of his character on Ultimate Spider-Man. Unfortunately he'll probably be pretty similar in the comic since Loeb is a producer on the show.

I'm not a fan of the character on the USM show, and with Loeb writing, I don't see this series being that good. Nor do I see it lasting very long, especially with a $3.99 price.

#9 Posted by CircularLogic (282 posts) - - Show Bio

USM is terrible, Loeb lost all that made him good years ago. McGuinness is in top form, though. 1 out of 3 ain't bad, but I have plenty of better Marvel NOW! books to pick from with much better promise than this.

I like how the bully looks like the Punisher

@MyComicStoreDotNET: Dido I and pretty much everyone i know hates that character in the show also it's Bull that Peter Quill survived but not Richard Ryder.

My first immediate thought too. McGuinness HAD to have used Mr. Strickland as inspiration. 50 bucks says he calls Sam a slacker on that same page.

#16 Posted by blackkitty (315 posts) - - Show Bio

Can someone please explain... why? I mean it was okay while Richard, Thanos and the Guardians were trapped in the Cancerverse but, it appears Thanos is live and well. The Guardians are okay so, why is Richard the only one in the Cancerverse? Oh wait, it's cause of television isn't it? *sigh* This is just stupidity. You have an established character, he was a consistent seller in his own book for years and... we ditch him, all that was developed and make this new one. The more things change...

I really have no idea who's this Nova really is. But i really love his costume!! So..is Nova corps some kind of a marvel's equivalent to DC's Green Lantern corps??

You just know Strickland's gonna call him a slacker (probably on these very pages). All we need is a crazy, but lovable scientist, with a kick ass modified car and we'll have a Back to the Future bingo (we already have the skateboarding underdog, the love interest, the Biff Tannen bully and Mr. Strickland).

Sort of the same. The Nova Corps is an intergalactic police force basically. However, during the Annihilation War, the entire Corps was destroyed except for Richard Rider who was able to host all of the Nova Corps powers in his own body making him incredibly powerful. However, in the Thanos Imperative, Richard Rider was trapped in a parallel universe called the Cancerverse as it collapsed as he and Peter Quill (Starlord) tried to keep Thanos from escaping back into the regular universe. Since the Nova Force resided in him alone at the moment the universe collapsed, it was believed that it was lost forever along with Rider. Over the past couple months though, both Thanos and Starlord have appeared as well as this new Nova but there has been no explanation on what has happened to Richard Rider.

My theories for why they have this new Nova are that they want to have a superhero in high school to try to rekindle that love that people had with Peter Parker back in the day or . . . they just don't want a main character to be named Dick Rider.

So is this new Nova kid totally new with no connection whatsoever with anyone from the past Nova corps??

and is Nova worth reading?? is this really actually a good series??

#22 Posted by Don_Jay (61 posts) - - Show Bio

@chocobojam: So far there have been zero connections between Alexander and Rider (or any other members of the Corps). And yes, it is worth reading. Annihilation was a good jumping point for the cosmic comics, because that's when Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning took over it and made Annihilation, Annihilation Conquest, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy and some other Events. And it was awesome in my opinion.

#23 Posted by chocobojam (288 posts) - - Show Bio

Actually..I was thinking what to choose Between Nova or Secret Avengers this February. But i really love Totally new character who take up a famous superhero mantle. so Its decided that Nova it is!!

#24 Posted by Don_Jay (61 posts) - - Show Bio

@chocobojam: I thought you meant the previous Nova series. That's worth reading, this, I'm not so sure about. There's a pretty good chance that the only good quality about this series will be McGuinness' art.

Marvel's Now stuff is awesome. Fantastic Four, FF, Avengers, Indestructible Hulk, All New X-men, (others), and now Nova!

@Don_Jay: 1955!?

#29 Posted by stu (378 posts) - - Show Bio

ill give it a shot. But it better be leading to Richard Rider`s return!!!

#30 Posted by Cap10nate (2155 posts) - - Show Bio

@chocobojam: I think that the only other mentions of Sam are from AVX and the Ultimate Spider Man cartoon. As for this series that is about to start, I don't know how it will be since I'm really not sure if I have read anything that Loeb has written. As someone mentioned above, if you want some excellent stories, read some of the cosmic stuff starting with Annihilation. It is one of my favorite stories.

#31 Posted by Kallarkz (3303 posts) - - Show Bio

i wonder if he will have all the power of the Nova Corps like Richard did

#32 Posted by The Sadhu (853 posts) - - Show Bio

@Don_Jay: I'm guessing that makes him a slacker!

#33 Posted by Mrfuzzynutz (980 posts) - - Show Bio

He's Not Worthy!! Haha

Seriously, This guy is seriously behind the 8-ball with me, in regards to me liking him. Thus far there has been nothing to find appealing about him. His Comic appearances so far have been like..what? 12- 13 panels maybe..with him being unconscious for most of them. And I find that Sam's tv appearances have been nothing short of annoying and irritating , so not only to see him in his own book aggravates me, but to be the replacement to Richard who should never have been replaced in the first place really butters my biscuits lol

i am Richard Rider fan and so I need to see where the NOVA legacy is going but I really DISLIKE Sam right now, so lets see where this goes.

So... the Nova Corps now is all black and gold? Sure makes total sense they've only been blue and gold forever, especially since there can't even be a Nova Corps anymore, but yeah why not, all the Nova force is just stuck in the Cancerverse with Rich and Worldmind never rebooted, this series technically can't exist, but hey whatever Loeb is a hack anyways.

#35 Posted by Trevel8182 (751 posts) - - Show Bio

@Mrfuzzynutz: Amen Brother!

Amen to that brother. I've been asking the same things since Thanos and Quill showed up in Avengers Assemble. Loeb is the reason I don't have much faith Marvel's tv shows, except for Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D., becuse, you know, in Whedon we trust.

I say bring back Richard Rider or least induct someone else. I don't understand this fascination with using teenage heroes, especially in such a big role.

$4 Pass

#47 Posted by BritishMonkey (320 posts) - - Show Bio

@chocobojam: Your best bet is to start off reading the Annihilation series and then move onto Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's Nova series.

But the Nova corps is sort of similar to Green Lantern corps, minus the rings and constructs. The Nova centurions are powered by the Nova force and they're essentially a galactic police force with the xandarian worldmind as their leader of sorts. Best I can describe it.

#48 Posted by Nova`Prime` (4157 posts) - - Show Bio

Cancer boy is not worthy of carrying the mantle of Nova.
