There's no questioning that AVENGERS ARENA has been generating a bit of controversy and debate over the nature of the book. Fans of the AVENGERS ACADEMY and RUNAWAYS have been expressing their outrage over a book that appears to be set to simply kill off those characters many consider beloved.

With the third issue, it's time for a character I've been waiting to see take the spotlight finally gets his turn. Darkhawk makes his move. What will this mean for the character?

AVENGERS ARENA #3

• X-23 vs. ANNIHILATION’s Cammi!
• A mystery opponent vs. AVENGERS ACADEMY’s Sentinel!
• Who is the killer stalking the competitors in their sleep?
• Plus: Darkhawk equals death!

no shame, the last advert was them all in the Battle Royale style. It's a fun idea, but there is nothing unique

Great and now Darkhawk is going to kill Cammi, what trash this book is

#4 Posted by MatKrenz (1515 posts) - - Show Bio

@Jonny_Anonymous: Or not. Do you have a time traveling machine and read the issue ? If you didn't then wait and see, it's a preview for petes sake.

im sorry, but i love how mad this run is making some people, i have no ties to any of these characters (i have not read any of the books they come from) so when this comes out it tpb i am all over it. side note, isnt the fact that it makes you angry to see the characters die a sign that it is good? dont you want the stuff you read to make you feel real emotions? maybe its just me

@MatKrenz: one that says Darkhawk = Death

@Bonzi161: No, it's good that other talented writers put the hard work in to making us care about these characters, it's bad that this hack cant do anything but kill them all.

Well, at least we know how it'll end: Katniss and Peeta will eat berries and then the Japanese Government will come in =)

I kinda like the book and I don't think that all of the guys that die here will stay dead.

#11 Posted by MatKrenz (1515 posts) - - Show Bio

@Jonny_Anonymous: Or not, I've read some Darkhawk stuff and he doesn't seem like the type of guy who runs around killing people for no reason. And unless you've read the issue we have no clue what's gonna happen.

I've seen you on these threads for a while. And honestly, I think at least 90% of your comments on the Vine are complaints upon complaints rife with nothing save negativity delineating all you don't like in the world of comics.

MatKrenz was right. The book isn't even out and you're griping about it - as I've seen you gripe at just about everything else involving your posts. No joke. Take a serious look at your posts.

While you certainly have every right to give voice to your opinion wheresoever and howsoever (to an extent) you choose, you're one negative buzz kill dude.

Please, prove me wrong, and let me know what comic pulls you actually like, what creative teams you actually appreciate, and I will be sure to check them out because they're bound to be absolutely fantastic reads if 'Mikey' actually likes them.

One thing I can't understand though is all those people claiming that they love this book because of all the fan outrage. If someone likes the book because of the art or the storytelling I can understand but enjoying the hell out of it just because it's pissing off other readers is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.

i now feel misunderstood on this point, im not loving it because they are mad, im loving it because its making them have an opinion based on emotion... thats called good writing. when you feel strongly for a fictional character the writer has done his job. the fact that people love these characters so much they get pissed when they die means something. im on of the few who honestly thing Bruce never should have came back, Dick should have been our new bat... forever... for real. if marvel will stick to its guns and kill this many heros for ever... im in.

This book doesn't piss me off in any way, but it does look quite horrible.

#16 Posted by InkInk (188 posts) - - Show Bio

It is a really dumb series I mean its obvious that X-23 is going to make it out and if they are going for a true Hunger Games/Battle Royal that means one man is going to live and it looks like that is DarkHawk. Ever wonder what is going threw the heads of some of the editors at Marvel?

#17 Posted by Jonny_Anonymous (41057 posts) - - Show Bio
@MatKrenz: the  Fraternity of Raptors went on a murder/death/kill rampage around the cosmos in the past, I see no reason why he wouldn't kill.

@Super_SoldierXII:  yea but the two issues before it are out and it's already had two pointless deaths, why should this one be any diffrent?

Well that's not really true considering I used to do a blog every week about the best books I had picked up.

Also books I like are:

Everything from Valiant - I'v been creating threads and posts trying to get pepole to read these books
Invincible - I'v been trying for years to get pepole caught up and not just trade wait.
Walking Dead - Same as above
Hellblazer - One of the best British characters ever created
Everything Hickman has ever wrote - I have read all of it
Saga - is amazing
Ultimate X-Men
Winter Solider
Allmost Everything Brubaker has ever wrote -  I still haven't got round to reading Gotham Central
Batman - Everbody loves that
Demon Knights - great book shame it wont last
Dial H - Same as above
Hawkeye - totally awesome, brings back great memory's of Immortal Iron Fist

I'm not going to name more but I easily could, the reason you think I'm more negative that I am is because you don't pay attention to my other posts

I actually like this book, and I am pretty sure I have said it a couple times on other threads. I'm excited to see Darkhawk in action this next issue and hope that this series lasts as long as it can, I like Arcade and I like his I am tired of losing attitude. The first issue was really good in my opinion I like how things turned out by the end Issue 1 as well.

I enjoy the covers...first it was Battle Royale, then Lord of the Flies, now Hunger Games. It amuses me.

I still don't know what to think of this series...it's kinda interesting, but at the same time feels like an excuse to get rid of some characters, while capitalizing on the popularity of this weird "kids killing kids" genre that came into light after Hunger Games' mad popularity. Even so, we kinda know some characters just won't die...

I mean, would they really kill off X-23, Nico, or Chase? I can see the Academy kids being rather expendable, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if Hazmat and Reptil bit the bullet at some point. Juston and his Sentinel I really like though...so I hope him being in this book is indicative of his being utilized more...I really hope they didn't just kill him...that would be a bummer

Well, I know some people who mean it literally but I can't really agree with what you're saying either.

The thing is, Hopeless tried to pick up as many pre-established characters as possible for this story to seemingly kill them off. He didn't make us care about them, other writers did and people bought their series to read about these characters. The whole premise of this series is actually stupid when you think about it because either he kills off interesting characters to infuriate their fans or they didn't really die and the whole story end up being pointless.

#23 Posted by lifeboy (1717 posts) - - Show Bio

I point out that it is ripping off battle royale, hunger games, lord of the flies. Get originall marvel and dont steal other peoples ideas.

#24 Posted by Don_Jay (62 posts) - - Show Bio

Call me jaded or whatever you want, but I'm willing to put a considerable bet on the fact that in the end it will be retconned somehow. My bet is on some sort of advanced VR machine all the characters are put into. Just think about it: there's no way the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the overall superhero community wouldn't be able to find Arcade's place in 30 days, plus he gets to torture the kids over and over until someone gets him and even then, at worst he gets beat up and the only charges that can stick are kidnapping. Plus we know that in 'mindspace' time can move very differently allowing them to play out 30 days in a few minutes or so.

Still, the book is kinda enjoyable and I like the art. It's kinda weird to see the AA logo styled after BR's logo on the same page with the Avengers logo styled after the Hunger Games logo.

Marvel realize's that. Arcade even mentions that he is ripping off the idea from other outside sources. The cover of the first issue is parodied after Battle Royale. I think it's been fun so far, though fairly sad for all those c-list characters that appear to be dying. Funny, I think Hunger Games knowingly ripped from Battle Royale.

#26 Posted by GothamRed (2615 posts) - - Show Bio

Marvel has to realize that conceptually this book:

A) can never be ongoing

B) can not end in a way that satisfies anyone

So why was this series made? It's the weakest idea in Marvel NOW!

#27 Posted by Sissel (2049 posts) - - Show Bio

@GothamRed: quick cash grab

#28 Posted by MercWithaMouth2385 (52 posts) - - Show Bio

It's actually the 'Battle Royale' logo. A movie that came out in Japan and was ripped off by Hunger Games author to be released in America and Europe.

#29 Edited by CircularLogic (320 posts) - - Show Bio

The problem with this book is the complete lack of drama (we get it, people will die and attack each other, whatever), the lack of any sort of social commentary being made (Most people hate the hunger games because it's marketed towards tweens, but there's some really good social satire within that justifies WHY these kids need to die), and the fact that it even lacks the balls to make the character deaths permanent (this entire series has a very obvious back door should it be cancelled).

The real disappointment here is that both the writer and artist are very talented, but because they are both relatively unknown creators with Marvel (I know Kev Walker did Thunderbolts but that never sold particularly well) they got assigned to this to capitalize on the fad, and now there's legions of fans who will never give them a cent of their money anymore.

#30 Posted by lifeboy (1717 posts) - - Show Bio

@raptorsrevenge: fun it may be, but they are stealing anothers idea and putting their characters in. If I were any of those companys mentioned, I would sue.

#31 Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus (6958 posts) - - Show Bio

Yeah that cover isn't Hunger Games inspired at all now, is it? I don't know, I've been hearing so many not liking this series much. It looks mildly interesting to me, even if the concept really isn't that original. After all, Hunger Games beats it by a few years, and The Culling by at least six months.

#32 Posted by RedHush1 (158 posts) - - Show Bio

I've enjoyed this book the writing and art is amazing in my perspective. Because Hopeless has said countless times that he will make you love the character and that this isn't just a Hey I'm going to kill the characters for no reason hell I never read Avengers Academy and the firs four pages with Mettle made me love him then he was killed. So I think Hopeless can pull this off I honestly think he'll give the character a heart and sometime before he just kills them off. Except that Red Raven girl he was just like fuck yo ass XD

#33 Posted by Avengers_4everXX (166 posts) - - Show Bio

@Jonny_Anonymous: the solicit definitely say X-23 vs. Cammi... so if anyone kills her it'll probably be X-23. It doesn't say anything about Darkhawk fighting Cammi, and we know from the preview that he's going to be fighting Sentinel

#34 Posted by kostisfire (124 posts) - - Show Bio

I just hope darkhawk is the guy or amongst the ones who make it out alive. He is the only character i care about from this book.

#43 Posted by chocobojam (288 posts) - - Show Bio

My problem with this series is, im almost not familiar with all of the characters. the only character that im somehow familiar is X-23 and the others i dont care if they die because they really look like expendables. And is it Arcade too strong for a supervillain?? i mean what kind of power can instantly kill a superhero with just a snap of a finger and can create a whole new place that no one can get out. And im curious, do the Avengers or the X-men has encountered Arcade before?? what did they do to beat this guy up??

#44 Posted by Tolliver_Trask (78 posts) - - Show Bio

Darkhawk shouldn't even be in this book, he predates all of these characters......and if they kill him I will be livid!

#45 Edited by Barubal10 (50 posts) - - Show Bio

I've enjoyed the first two issues so much. Guess I'm lucky not to have much affinity w/ any of the characters (cept Darkhawk, and now Deathlocket). The premise being not unique is a non-issue. I am so excited about the outside world finding out about the missing chars.
