First Look: AGE OF APOCALYPSE #1

Posted by G-Man (26151 posts) - 1 year, 4 months ago - Show Bio

It's time to return to the Age of Apocalypse. We've seen quite a bit of this world again in the pages or Rick Remender's UNCANNY X-FORCE and now it's time for more. If you're read the recent Point One issue of X-Force, you know things have changed in a big way. It's not the same world we've seen before as the mutants have a new problem to deal with.

Today, Marvel has released a first look at the first issue.

Marvel is proud to present your first look at Age of Apocalypse #1, from the creative team of Dave Lapham and Roberto De La Torre. Spinning out of the critically acclaimed Uncanny X-Force, the Amazing X-Men and the human resistance must fight tooth and nail to end the tyranny that has left their world ravaged! Continuing Apocalypse’s war on humanity, Weapon X leads the genocide that rains down upon this dimension, eliminating any who stand in his way.

“This new Age of Apocalypse book does the impossible – it revolutionizes an old concept without a reboot,” explains Senior Editor Nick Lowe. “If you’ve been reading Uncanny X-Force, you know where this is coming from and you’re already in. If you’re an Age of Apocalypse junkie, this builds on the alternate universe’s mythology is fascinating and troubling ways. And if you aren’t either and just want a ground-breaking, easy-entry book that will challenge everything you know about the X-Men, there hasn’t been a better jumping on point.”

Can anyone stop the evil Weapon X and who are the X-Terminated? Find out in Age of Apocalypse #1, with a cover by Humberto Ramos and Dean White that no fan can miss, hitting comic shops everywhere and the Marvel Comics app, this March!

Eh... if Sabretooth and Jean are still :depowered" I'll think about it!!! They already killed basically all the AoA X-Men so what's the point! These new characters are alright (I mean really haven't read them yet, but that Prophet guy was cool!)

Great balls of fire (can't say what I was thinking because this site is Pg) but I love the artwork it sets the tone for a very dark & gritty series.

Has a great style, this should be a good read, especially spinning out of Uncanny X-Force.

Pretty psyched; the original AoA arc was one of my all-time favorites, growing up.

#12 Posted by ArturoCalaKayVee (3900 posts) - 1 year, 4 months ago - Show Bio

Definitely going to pick this up.

#13 Posted by ThePRez (224 posts) - 1 year, 4 months ago - Show Bio

whos the roster in this AoA

#14 Edited by Shadow_Thief (2491 posts) - 1 year, 4 months ago - Show Bio

On an only slightly unrelated note, am I the only one who, upon hearing mention of the AoA, immediately gets a version of The Age of Aquarius with "Aquarius" replaced by "Apocalypse" stuck in their head?

Seriously, somebody needs to make that video.

All I can say is De La Torre can draw.

one of my favorite things about the X-Men in the age of apocalypse was that the dynamic of leadership and the teams had been flipped on it's head. I liked that Wolverine wasn't an X-Men anymore. I liked that Sabertooth kind of took his place. I liked Morphs comic relief. I Liked Storm and Quicksilver being the equivalent to Scott and Jean as team leaders, and power couples. I liked Storm's look with the short more millitant hair style. All of this has been lost washed away. If they wanted to create yet another alternate reality with completely different characters, I wish they would have done that as opposed ruining one of my favorite story lines by modernizing it. so much of the dynamic that I loved in the AoA originally seems to have been lost in all of the revisits thus far.

This series doesn't look bad, but why even call it AoA? Apocalypse has been out of the picture for awhile in that universe and just about every character which distinguished that series has been killed off or transplanted to the 616. Even if it is the AoA universe, using that name just seems like a slap in the face to fans of that series. Call it X-Men: Human Rebellion, or X-Force: Otherworlds or something.

@nappystr8 X-Terminated would do & @ThePrez roster for X-Terminated is Horror Show (Graydon Creed the big guy in the mask), Good Night (Donald Pierce the guy in the all black domino mask), Fiend (Francesca Trask the girl in the purple outfit tech looking outfit), Deadeye (Rismans daughter she has the hood cloak & sniper rifle) & lastly Prophet (William Stryker the guy in the hooded ninja gear).

@Thunderscream:  cant be Namor's dead in AoA

Damn, no love for AoA Creed. That's alright, I'm more interested in Prophet anyway :P

I don't think Jean Grey's costume is plausible, much less functional.

I love Age of Apocalypse, but having a cover like that (Jean's costume) gets into that area where I would be embarrassed if some non-comics reader saw me with that.

Well said. I pretty much have zero interest in this, (despite the fact I love Uncanny X-force so I've been prepped for the new AoA).

I was debating whether or not to pick this up, I am having to drop a few books due to not having the money to pay for everything that's released, and this just doesn't grab my attention enough to buy it.

I think you're right here. Some of the art is hard to follow but I understand the need to give it an edgy look. This might be a little too edgy.

The problem with creating new characters is that the fans won't buy into them.So creative teams are forced to recycle the same tired characters ad nauseum. That is probably why, thinking they had created a closed storyline, the original writers killed off so many characters in the original AOA.This concept wasn't supposed to come back, but here it is anyway.Did somebody say X-Men vs. Watchmen?
