I really love the cover, not very keen on the interiors though...

Looks like a good issue!

Yeah JLD has been really awesome. Issue #13 was pretty epic. It's one of my favorite books in the DC lineup right now alongside I, Vampire and Demon Knights.

Agreed, I, Vampire and Demon Knights are pretty damn awesome. Nothing bad can come out from The Dark (except for Phantom Stranger that is).

Wonder if this is a fill in artist or if Michael Janin is off the book?

I really need to check this book out, if not for the story but for the beautiful covers alone

I recommend you start with issue 9.

I've been debating whether to jump on this title or not. Would this issue be a good jumping on point for new readers?

Well, the first arc ended in the recent annual, but this continues right from where the annual left off, so I'm not entirely sure if this issue is new reader friendly or not.

Cool how Frank talks in an intellectual style. And yay, Amethyst!!

can someone please tell me if the portrayal of Frankenstein is any good? with characters like his they're usually hit or miss, and these few pages dont tell me much aside from he seems to be rather chivalrous

Frankenstein is the complete opposite of his mainstream version: an skilled and powerful warrior, but also quite intellectual. Although when it comes to Frank, I personally recommend Lemire's Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown. It's what got me into the character in the first place.

Jeff Lemire was at our school today for a Q and A, not only is he a great writer he's also one of the most down to earth person I've ever seen.

Love this series, It's fan-freaking-tastic. Although it's kinda sad to not see Mikel Janin's work here, although I'm sure he'll be back for the next arc or so.

Did anyone else think that Tim Hunter could be RIP Hunter? add an "E" at the end of his first name.

@Trodorne: Nah, he's the kid from Books of Magic.

I like how they're focusing on the lesser known characters in this issue, Amethyst, Frank and Orchid.

Didn't the books beep? Could they be from Apokolips?

This is one of my favorite titles coming out of DC right now. Can't wait. Bit why is Mikel Janin missing this issue? Taking a break?

#34 Posted by FelixStrange (13 posts) - - Show Bio

Absoulutely one of my favorite books! I will miss Frankensteins solo title , but I am very excited he has aligned his sword with Justice League Dark. DC keeps putting out Amazing books under it's Dark and Edge billing.

Looks like someone has skeletons in their closet!

Lemire has been killing it on both Animal Man and JLD, and I'm really excited to see where they go with the books of magic being technology based. The new artist (is he a fill-in for Janin or an official replacement?) is really good as well. Reminds me a lot of Doug Mahnke, which is fitting for a book with dark in the title.

But I must say, Amethyst and Frankenstein are getting on my nerves already. Frank is just a bad character, even Lemire can't write him well. I realize Jeff must have an affinity for the guy and wants to give him a new home after his solo series (which was the only bad work I have ever read by Lemire) was cancelled, but he's just painfully uninteresting. As far as Amethyst it is very clear she was a mandate on DC's part to try and boost sales on her new series. I think it is great that DC is taking a risk on such a different kind of character, but she doesn't belong in this book at all. Hopefully they will not be as big a focus in the book going forward as this preview suggests.

Still super excited for issue 14 though. Super excited.

black orchird chest kinda outplace ouch.

@Miss_Garrick:

To be fair, Mary Shelley wrote the Frankenstein's Monster as a well-spoken intellectual.

#39 Posted by Miss_Garrick (1757 posts) - - Show Bio

@MutieLover: That's interesting!

And it just figures that hollywood would mess that up in their various films versions of the novel.
