Back in May we had the exclusive announcement for LORDS OF MARS, teaming John Carter and Tarzan in a six-issue miniseries. Today Dynamite Entertainment has given us an exclusive extended look at the first issue, on sale in August.

LORDS OF MARS #1 (OF 6)

(W) Arvid Nelson (A) Roberto Castro (CA) Alex Ross

An epic crossover event starring the two greatest heroes of pulp fiction begins this June! The legendary Ape-Man has claimed his title as Lord of Greystoke, but his very life is threatened when a hunting excursion with his fellow "gentlemen" goes disastrously wrong. Meanwhile, on Mars, John Carter is forced to respond to a veiled threat from his defeated enemies. Mars and Earth might be separated by millions of miles, but a sinister force is at work on both planets, setting the two champions on a deadly collision course. It all starts with Lords of Mars #1: The Hunting Party. Set phasers for "mayhem"!

these characters should be licensed before they are used IMO. Not everything is Public Domain.

Unfortunately, the Movie 'John Carter' tainted my view on anything that involves John Carter, not even Tarzan can help. Not even the sweet Alex Ross cover :(

You're missing out on a lot of good comic then.

Once a character goes into the Public Domain they can not be licensed. You can put a license on the material you create, but the characters themselves remain in the PD and if it wasn't for Disney and their work to alter copyright laws every time they are about to expire a lot of Marvel's, DC's, and the above mentioned Disney characters would be fair game. In my opinion that's a good thing, you could have independent companies do their takes on the big name characters and that would force companies like Marvel and DC to keep things fresh or loss market shares with their characters.
