Like most of Daniels stuff the art is there the story is just a bit rubbish, I'm thinking this may get dropped after the night of owls tie-in. But the cover is awsome

Yeah, I'm getting ready to send this book to the 'culling' of titles off my list. Batman is awesome, and I may even keep Batman & Robin, but Detective Comics and The Dark Knight are both on the chopping block probably once they are done with their current storyline and the Night of Owls event.

I dropped this series and Dark Knight last week from my pull list. Sorry, I just can't waste the money anymore. I replaced it with Batman Beyond Unlimited and will eventually pick up Earth 2.

Same here. I liked the Dollmaker story but this one is a letdown.

meh.

Now that Batman:TDK has been fixed by hiring Gregg Hurwitz, Detective is the next in need of an overhaul. Definitely about to become the weakest of the four Batman comics, at least until Batman Inc starts up again.

The Penguin storyline has been a bit lackluster. But I'm going to give TD credit for the Dollmaker storyline and stick around for a little while longer. Plus...holy s*** dat cover.

It's always the Penguins fault. I did love the REALLY creepy feel for the first three comics. Having someones face cut off and rearranged with others to create new skin, is a bit trite, but still effective.

@Gambler: Did you read Pain and Prejudice? I used to agree with you but that series goes a long way into making him a real villain..

One of my friends was reading this, he started picking it up after the new 52 started deciding to read one Batman series, and for weeks I was telling him read Batman Scott Snyder is god, and he was like nah detective comics is awesome.. last week he caved, read all my issues of Batman and now is freaking out for the next one. I read the first issue, wasn't crazy about it, I would love if Detective comics took a different approach to Batman, kinda left out the super villains doing super villainy things and actually showed Batman solving crimes by the regular Joe, or like G-man said before to have it as a younger Batman (Though Im adamant that I had that idea first) honing his skills (perhaps before the city was overrun by super villains). You know making detective comics about learning to be a detective sorta...

@Gambler: haha Its worth checking out.. that being said I only read 4 out of the 5 issues.. so maybe the fifth one ruins the whole series.. but I'm willing to bet not..

@gambler Pain & Prejudice was really good, bought issue

#1 when I was in a “why not” mood that week and I was blown away, the ending

felt a bit rushed but over all a really good miniseries.

Daniels is an okay writer, he has some really good story

lines, and some mediocre story lines, and a some horrible story lines, I don’t

hate Detective Comics enough to drop it. The Dollmaker story line was good. The

whole Joker’s face being off and a cult rising up, I’m looking forward to

seeing where that is going. I’m giving Detective Comics a year before I decide what

if I’m going to keep it just because Daniels is so up and down in his story

writing. Ideally it would be great to a decent writer doing the stories with Daniels

doing the art and co-plotting

I don't follow this series (and after the things I've heard about this series I probably won't) but that cover is amazing. I read Tony S. Daniel's run on Batman right when Rebirth began (that was my introduction to DC Comics). I don't think that his writing is horrible, it just lacks the ability to capture interest, but I I do think that his art is very good. This cover proves that...

i get that simplicity was the goal for the logo, but with their list of artists at their disposal, you'd think it would've been more creative. I really want to read this one though, Ive been wondering how much different the oenguin is

I just wish that the Detective title was in sync with the whole Court of Owls thing that is going on, but I suppose that is the point, right? Isn't Detective as is to Batman what Action Comics is to Superman? At any rate, the story seems interesting to me.

i second that

simple, his character in the old batman show as well as his character in tim burtons batman movie. his one of batmans top rogues. he is a pretty cool character when he is written well. read Penguin: Pride and Prejudice and also read his one-shot from joker's asylum series.

This series of Detective Comics started with so much promise, but the last few issues have really fell flat. As soon as I saw what happened to the Joker in the last panel of issue 1 I thought I would be permanently hooked, but it looks like I was wrong.

That cover is actually pretty cool though. I agree on that front.

Yes, there are some cringe-worthy lines in the script, but overall Daniel is doing a fine job. This is nowhere near as good as Snyder's book, but worth picking up for sure.
