Because that's what happens when you skip the services of a character designer. Am I the only one who thinks American comics have a big aesthetical problem, especially since their big Japanese competitor is so strong in that department

There is a lot (A LOT) of anime and manga that makes use of "only six faces" to avoid that problem, though.

@foamborn:

Well manga/anime also have aesthetical problems sometimes. I have notice this before but i never saw a explanation why she looks alike that specially since she looks very different from New Earth Counterpart. I also notice that Bruce Wayne, Jason Todd and Billy Batson have sometimes same short black hair with blue eyes but with different ages.

Sure Circe looks alike one. But Minotaurs and Boars and cyclops vampire army would be the awesome thing that someone could think or stupidest thing that someone could think.

@foamborn: lol, seriously? Japan is usually awful with aesthetics. When I was younger I use to think they had the best art/animation around, but after growing up with it and then being exposed to comics I can defiantly say comics have much much better aesthetics.

Six is still way better than one. It's not usual to see homogenous looking characters, with nigh-indistinguishable personalities and a blank inscrutable countenance in comic books.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I enjoy anime and manga, just pointing out that they have different tricks they employ to keep things consistent.

I would make the argument that it's far more common to see limited faces in manga and anime than in stuff in the states, if only because of the different schedules that manga and anime have to keep to (and different budgets). I enjoy both, but it's just another trick that they use to keep things rolling, much like artists in US comics have a variety of tricks they use to keep on schedule.

Actually he was, since he was designed as a parody of everything Waid/Ross disliked about character designs from the 90'ties. Which ofc hurt Liefeld's feelings because Magog looks a heck of a lot like Cable.

@foamborn: I suppose so

Yet manga outsells american comics by a sizable margin so they must be doing something right.

@foamborn: Yeah, almost every manga series has a well made animated series to go with it. What do comics have? virtually nothing. If American comics got that same treatment then they'd be doing just as well. maybe even better.

I'm guessing those numbers are from Japan. They also sell used girl panties and have air sex contests.... Japan ain't right at all.

and a knack for creating immersive, captivating stories that are usually fantastically well designed and easy on the eyes. I think comics could benefit greatly from the insight of professional character designers. The half-assed character designs and the less than perfect mise en scnène can be quite off putting.
