Last week we saw a Marvel NOW! teaser for 'XX' by Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel. The first assumption most of us made was it was another X-Men book. But why the double x's? The second guess was something to do with the female chromosome. So why not an all-female X-Men book? There are certainly plenty of great female X-Men.

Today, Marvel has released details via USA Today.

From the image we see Jubilee, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey, Rogue, Storm and Psylocke. Brian Wood mentions the drama begins with Jubilee bringing an orphaned baby home. What amps up the tension here is the baby might be the "key to mankind's survival." There will also be the appearance and return of a Grant Morrison-created villain, Sublime. But his showing up doesn't mean what you might expect.

Wood mentions delving into the characters to show their flaws, something not often seen in superhero books. There will also be "a lot of relationships, love and sex" in the book "in the classic X-Men way - the way it used to be."

You can read more on what Wood has to say over at USA Today. The series will simply be called X-MEN.

I L O V E T H I S I D E A !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D but all joking a side, i really do love the idea of an all girl superhero team! it needs to be a ongoing book and i would buy it!!

I am so getting this!

This is...disappointing. Then again, Brian Wood is a good writer and i do like his work on UXM. So I'll give it a shot.

Coipel's artwork is so beautiful.

And everyone hoping for X-23 ongoing Sighs .... she's not even on the team?

YEA!!!! dreams do come true. finally an X-Women book. and jubilee and kitty pryde are here so awesome. just wish jubilee wasn't a vampire and had her powers back but i'll take what i can get. now if only jean grey would comeback and lead this team it would be PERFECT.

Awesome roster, art and writer, need i say more?

#8 Edited by Shika1Dude (107 posts) - - Show Bio

hmm it looks like Marvel has created something quite interesting here, too bad there isn't word of Moonstar and Karma joining this team **fingers crossed**

I think this is the first and only X-Book since Marvel Now I'll be getting into :)

#10 Posted by Squares (3102 posts) - - Show Bio

I see they're giving Storm a mohawk again. Because that made so much sense the first time...

#11 Edited by The Mighty Monarch (2188 posts) - - Show Bio

This just seems... a little forced. Isn't Fearless Defenders already Marvel's token 'all-female' team?

Also, I love that it's 'X-Men' and has no men XD

#12 Posted by jesusdisciple001 (541 posts) - - Show Bio

X force is being drawn by coipel right

I actually think the mohawk looks pretty cool

#14 Posted by GrandHarrier (109 posts) - - Show Bio

@starrk_coyote: One already exists. It's called Birds of Prey.

So, is the title meant to be ironic, or...?

On a more useful note, several of these characters are ones I was interested in seeing more of, so I may have to pick this one up. And I keep hearing a lot of good things about the creative team.

#16 Posted by DH69 (4258 posts) - - Show Bio

glad to see another all girl team, but seriously give me back my lady liberators i want to see invisible woman, she-hulk, MS MARVEL, and other female AVENGERS team up

#17 Posted by Target_X (379 posts) - - Show Bio

Sadface. X.x Maybe Jubilee will get her powers back and stop being a vampire though.

#18 Posted by impossibilly (876 posts) - - Show Bio

Wow, I don't think they could improve upon that lineup in an all-female X-book. Add to that a very solid creative team and I am in for at least the first issue.

Do we know when this debuts?

Love it, about time, will definitely read

Oh, and very happy to see Jubilee back

BUT

I would love to see X-23 join the team, the only reason she can't would be if this was set during X-23 being in Avengers Arena

#20 Posted by Shika1Dude (107 posts) - - Show Bio

@Target_X: im glad she's back, the whole mutant vampire deal was weird

#21 Posted by chocobojam (288 posts) - - Show Bio

Although it sounds too gimmicky to me but i'm sure that i cannot resist in trying out this one.

true..but that is only on DC's part, not marvel's part, not ever Since Lady Liberators, and that comic ONLY lasted 29 issues.... :-/ that is not good Enough for me.....

That is so cool.

Fearless Defenders and an all girls X-Men book... This is awesome! I love how Kitty Pryde is once again being redeemed after the "stuck ina bullet" fiasco.

Does this mean that the present adjective-less X-Men book is getting cancelled?

Agh!! Can't wait! I love Coipel's art and have recently been getting into Brian Wood's work.

I'm loving forward to this! Hopefully Storm's mohawk is just for the cover, I don't really dig that look...

I think that's her look from now on or until it they think she needs to be redesigned again

Good idea, they need X23!

Honestly, it's probably for the best. From a non-book perspective, this keeps people from rolling their eyes and saying "oh look, they shoehorned X-23 into another book." From a character perspective, I think Laura needs a breather, from combat at any rate. Maybe that's just me. (But let's please not turn this into a discussion about X-23 ^_^).

This is probably the first Marvel NOW book I've seen that actually strikes me as pretty cool. Still confused about the title though.

Yeah, I love those two together.

It would have been bold to name this X-Women... And I would have loved it!!! Still down for it though.

#33 Posted by mattydeNero (519 posts) - - Show Bio

I'm super-stoked about the line-up but to have Jubiliee as the leader in the midst of some heavy female hitters--and their strong personalities--it's already got me at the "I'll believe it when I read it." Looking forward to this book.

Why not get a female writer? I am not saying that male writers cannot write female characters, but it just seems if you wanted this comic to be something different than just a roster of "females kicking ass" you might try a different approach. A female writer might be able to bring a fresh genuine perspective to these character's motivations and struggles that might give a meaningful reason for an all female team.

But then again, this is Marvel who are much more interested in decimal numbering and triple shipping books in a month.

Does anyone remember the Milo Manara X-Women book? Holy Jesus that was bad! Thank god Brian Wood can write, and Olivier Coipel doesn't draw porn, looking at you Greg Land!

love the roster but everyone except rachel is on another team....... please put people on one team & leave them i dont wanna see the same faces EVERYWHERE there are enough mutants that they dont have to follow wolverine's lead & be on every single team..... this messes up the flow when it comes to crossovers & time frames in the comic world

#37 Posted by TDK_1997 (13666 posts) - - Show Bio

I expected more but I will be getting this because of Coipel only.

#38 Edited by CrowJ (6 posts) - - Show Bio

I don't think Marvel knows what the hell it wants to do with Jubilee to be honest.

#39 Posted by AlKusanagi (549 posts) - - Show Bio

How about an all female X-Force with Illyana, X-23 and a couple of other asskickers?

#40 Posted by Squares (3102 posts) - - Show Bio

@feargalr: But it never made sense.

#41 Posted by grifter78 (229 posts) - - Show Bio

So, is Jubilee not a vampire anymore? (yes, I'm behind)

#42 Posted by Teerack (4543 posts) - - Show Bio

omg this could of be amazing if it was named xxx xD

#43 Posted by dondave (26498 posts) - - Show Bio

Aren't Storm and Psylocke the leaders of Uncanny X-force

#44 Posted by Duo_forbidden (1160 posts) - - Show Bio

Hoping that X-23 will show up in the future. Don't shatter my dreams!!!!!! It could happen!!!!!!!!

Either way, I'll give this series a shot.

@blur1528: I'm pretty sure they won't call anything X-women #1 for awhile, because when google it, this comes up! and I'm thinking Marvel just wants to forget all about that. The 90's were screwed up.....

Just read the USA Today article, and I will be picking this one up! That makes three X books on my pull list so far... I'm running out of money.

So you are basically saying that Brian Wood will not try a different approach or bring a different perspective to these characters simply because he is a male writer?

So storm's going to be on two all female x-men squads now (aside from puck I guess)? But I like the team here, it's some of my favorite X-Girls. I also like that even though now the team is literally completely female, they're still the X-Men.

#50 Posted by MSchiwal (71 posts) - - Show Bio

The author has confirmed the Jubilee is still a vampire via twitter. However with the current status of the Phoenix force granting powers, I wouldn't be surprised if she got some powers besides the vampiric ones at some point.

I would also like to see X-23 at some point however she is off planet at the moment in Avenger's Arena and may not even survive that so it makes sense that she wouldn't be in the opening roster... besides which if they did then it would COMPLETELY spoil that comic.

I also have to say while some people were saying that this book should have been X-Women or XX-Men or something different... This is actually huge. They gave them the flagship X-Men name, the title series... to a team of all women and only half the team is white. Seriously, Marvel is winning the diversity battle and doing a great job.

So for people who are a bit behind

Storm and Psylocke - Same powers and will soon be leading the Uncanny X-Force. Storm is currently teaching at the school.

Jubilee - Vampire. No mutant abilities. Left with a pacifist vampire sect to learn to better control herself.

Rachel Grey - No changes known of at this time. Teaching at the school.

Rogue - Now an Avenger. Retains her mutant powers but no longer possesses the Captain Marvel abilities of flight and super-strength.

Shadowcat - Headmistress of the school. No power changes.
