DC Unveils Dustin Nguyen's Variant Cover for BATMAN #7

Have you had a chance to read BATMAN #6 yet? If you're like us, you're still getting over everything that's been going on. The hardest part about reading BATMAN is having to wait another month for the next issue. With the Night of the Owls story coming up, DC has been putting out bits of information about the event. Today, they're giving us a look at Dustin Nguyen's variant cover to BATMAN #7.

Dustin said the following:

While reading Scott Snyder’s script, there was an act that really stuck with me. It was a scene where Batman was mixed with pain, fear, and shock. I thought that was a powerful moment in the issue and decided to base the cover off of that moment.

BATMAN #7 is on sale March 21.

It's a nice cover but i'm not really seeing the shock or fear in Batman's face or body.

@azza04: maybe he isn't

@clemj: Well....according to the artist he based the cover on a scene from Scott's script where Batman is in pain fear and shock. I just don't see the shock or fear.

I like Nguyen's stuff but not this. The face is sophmoric. Looks like something in a "Learn How To Draw Comic Book Characters" explainer. I'm actually amazed at how many pro comic artists suck at faces. Jock is good. Rafael Albuquerque is OK. Tim Sale's Batman stuff had a style moreso than believable faces, emotions, reactions. I liked Maleev's Daredevil stuff. I just don't get how many comic illustrators suck at faces!

Does DC do Variant covers for every comic?

#6 Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus (5878 posts) - 1 year, 3 months ago - Show Bio

Hmmm, this is a nice cover but if that's fear and shock its not done well. I see more pain and rage in Bats's face than anything else. Still, good stuff!

Meh, it's kind of disproportionate.

That... doesn't really answer my question. Do they do Variant covers every month for DC Comics? Or are they only doing variant covers for issue 7

ill stick with the regular capullo cover.

none of the variants for batman has topped the main cover (except ethans variant for the first batman)

Very nice art pic in my opinion, I can defiantly tell he is in pain, not so much "shock" but if I was bleeding all over the place I would be experiencing both and probably only able to show one over the other.

He looks...defiant

#17 Posted by xanthiss (169 posts) - 1 year, 3 months ago - Show Bio

looks like his giant head is to big for his body, and he has small feet.

They do it for certain comics. Ones I can think of off the top of my head would be: Green Lantern, Batman, Action Comics, and Justice League.

I don't see how any of you would worry if he's shocked. After all "I'm the Got-Damn Batman!"

Why haven't I read issue 6 yet?? Dustins artwork is always a treat

#27 Posted by jaredbright (200 posts) - 1 year, 3 months ago - Show Bio

I don't think they need variant covers every issue. I'm behind in my reading, but so far it's great. Capullo's art is beyond great and the book is number 2 in sales/orders/whatever.

They done it for the past 2 Swamp Thing's too if I'm not mistaken. Which surprised me.

They need Alex Ross...

@TheCheeseStabber: It is the giant penny. The Court Of Owls invades the 'Cave in that issue.

I usually quite like Nguyen's stuff, but that sucks.
