Entertainment Weekly announced today that DC comics is launching two new titles in October which will expand the Batverse. Neither of these books will actually be about Batman though. The first book is ARKHAM MANOR, where Wayne Manor will become a dungeon for the crazies of Gotham where inmates wind up dead. The series will be written by Gerry Duggan (NOVA) and drawn by Shawn Crystal (DEADPOOL). Here's the cover from EW.

The second Bat-related titles is called GOTHAM ACADEMY, which will appeal more to teens and it will be set in Gotham's most prestigious prep school where Bruce Wayne is a benefactor. The series is written by Becky Cloonan (DEMO) and Brendan Fletcher and drawn by Karl Kerschl (TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE).

GOTHAM ACADEMY hits stores on October 1st, and ARKHAM MANOR comes out on October 22nd.

Oooh, I'm going to be picking up Arkham Manor. Looks good.

That first cover is great....but it's not like there aren't already 100 Bat titles to choose from

I'm usually not a big fan of more Batman books but these look interesting!

Of course they did...Hahahahaha!!

I'm not sure I quite grasp the concept of Arkham Manor. Of the two I think the Becky Cloonan book sounds best.

BECKY CLOONAN!!

This is coming from a hardcore Batman fan, but DC, we already have a million Batman (related) books, while characters like Cyborg don'teven have their own series.

I know right, this wasn't the least bit surprising.

Two more Batman related books. This is exactly what we need. Good job DC, you never fail to disappoint me.

I'm not gonna lie, I will get Gotham Academy.

Exactly this.

What!? DC launching new Batman books!?!?!? No one could have seen that coming!

Snark aside, I'm really not getting what Arkham Manor is supposed to be about. Its set in Wayne Manor, but won't involve Batman, and its about dead Arkham inmates living in the basement? Just... huh?

Beginning to long for the day the Bat-bubble explodes in DC's face just so it will force them to move out of Gotham.

Like, it doesn't involve Batman but it takes place at his house? I'm glad, I'm not the only one that's confused by it. Do they pay rent or nah?

I think, literally, DC's slate of comics is like half bat related now

@squalleon: @lagozzino: @kivatt: Newsarama posted this update about Arkham Manor.

Meanwhile, as suspected, there is something happening to the current Arkham Asylum soon. "When catastrophe strikes Arkham Asylum, where will Gotham City house the world's most dangerous criminals? And when inmates are found murdered, what is Batman prepared to do in search of justice?" the press release asks.

So I guess Bruce is giving up his home to house the inmates? Still sounds like a odd premise.

At least these are original ideas.

Both have really good art. It's impossible to get all these batman books. I wouldn't have the money for anything else if I got them all.

#21 Posted by Egie_Asemota1 (22 posts) - - Show Bio

sigh.....anything that isn't Batman is not Batman enough.

#22 Posted by SmashBrawler (5978 posts) - - Show Bio

And still no Alfred series. FOR SHAME DC, FOR SHAME.

#23 Posted by noj (1094 posts) - - Show Bio

@krypton-115: wait till Comic Con. I bet ya a dollar that DC announces a few new series one of which is Cyborg. Or maybe a Cyborg/Shazam team up book!

#24 Posted by Outside_85 (9966 posts) - - Show Bio

@noj: I'd almost be prepared to take you up on it, because DC has for the past couple of years (wisely perhaps) avoided announcing anything major at SDCC since they have to fight for page space with Marvel and half of Hollywood. They've tended to save the announcements for later cons, when they arent just releasing it through the web, like here.

Of course DC added more Batman books. All DC cares about is Batman. It's company might as well change it's name to Batman. Batman Batman Batman. Everything is Batman is the motto of DC.

#26 Posted by sagejonathan (2013 posts) - - Show Bio

I love batman, but I'm refusing to buy his books because DC gives just way too much. I don't want to support Batman if thats all we are getting.

#27 Posted by Twentyfive (2845 posts) - - Show Bio

I'll give Gotham Academy a shot. The other one is meh as hell in my opinion.

I wonder how Becky Cloonan's writing will be.

#28 Posted by BillyFamine (30 posts) - - Show Bio

The current bat books are more than enough for me.

#29 Posted by CaptainHoopla (1172 posts) - - Show Bio

Could be good, but whatever. I doubt I'll check out either. My monthly Batman quota is full already.

#30 Posted by manwithoutshame (654 posts) - - Show Bio

Why not just revive Gotham Central instead?

#31 Posted by Fuego123 (6 posts) - - Show Bio

I would like to trade 1 Batman series for 1 Spectre series. Thx.

#33 Posted by zodac (36 posts) - - Show Bio

Anyone else getting the feeling that Gotham Academy is where Cassie will make her reappearance...

#34 Posted by CheVelle (6 posts) - - Show Bio

Might have to check this comic out hmm

#35 Posted by Paste_Pot_Pete (107 posts) - - Show Bio

Sounds interesting, but I'll have to see the reviews.

That's eight bucks i'll save.

I've read some of her self published fantasy works like Wolves, The Mire and Demeter. I'm pretty sure Demeter got an Eisner nod this year too. That should give you an indication of her skill as a writer.

Well those are odd ideas for books .

I agree. Especially since it's everyone's fault. Where were they when Team 7, Grifter, Demon Knights, and other books were on the shelves? Batman sales. They did not. Period.

#44 Posted by clayscarface (121 posts) - - Show Bio

I know Batman sells, but isn't this off-putting for casual/new readers? Like "Oh, yeah I totally want to get more Batman stuff because of whatever...but wait...there are like 7 books that he's on the cover of...how do I know what's happening? I don't want to buy all 7...never mind." Don't the more straightforward titles get more money usually, anyway? Like Batman or Detective Comics I would guess makes them the most money? I'm just spit-balling. Also, if that movie plan is correct and they are making Sandman and Shazam movies before the others...that's risky and different. Try that with comics, too.

#45 Edited by The Stegman (25522 posts) - - Show Bio

@guardiandevil83: Exactly. Everyone keeps saying they want other characters to get titles, but don't buy them when they do. Batman sells, no need to get so annoyed by it.

#46 Posted by pingclang (290 posts) - - Show Bio

More Batman? DC should just change their name to Batman comics since that seems to be the only thing they want to put any focus on. " Outsiders? No. Justice Society? Nah. New Gods? What?..No! More Batman? Yes! More Batman." It'll sell though so good luck to them.

#47 Posted by Perfect 10 (1171 posts) - - Show Bio

@lagozzino: maybe an elseworlds title? or once again dc is spoiling themselves and something will happen between now and october where batman loses or just plains moves out of wayne manor

#48 Edited by fallbrigade (117 posts) - - Show Bio

Dayum, the hate is strong in this thread.

I know right.

I'm excited for these, more so Gotham Academy. Not huge with the art for Arkham Manor, but the idea intrigues me.

I love Batman, and more books that take place around him or his universe are welcome in my book. It's not like we won't see more, non-Batman related titles be revealed soon(er than later.)

#49 Posted by akbogert (3227 posts) - - Show Bio

Considering that these books are being announced in EW, my guess is they're already trying to target a non-comic-reading demographic here (especially with Academy). Not to say these won't be good for comic fans but I'm sensing more of a mainstream appeal here.

Anyway while I agree that the Batman-centric publishing model from DC is a bit ridiculous, this is the 75th anniversary so they're allowed to go a little overboard right now. IMHO.

#50 Posted by V_Scarlotte_Rose (6521 posts) - - Show Bio

Hmm. Coming into this thread I was expecting news of Jim Lees' Batman series. Lots of new stuff for the anniversary then.
