Earlier this month Marvel announced a free digital copy of Avenging Spider-Man #1 when you buy the comic. A code would be included so you can enjoy the comic in both printed and digital format. This sounds like a great idea. Instead of having to pay extra, if you're already buying the comic, why not get it digitally for free? You're already paying for it so unless you really like the issue, paying extra could be a tough decision. There has been some concern over this but most of the response has been positive.

Marvel has heard the support and cheers and have made another announcement.

As a result of the overwhelming support for the Avenging Spider-Man #1 With Free Digital Code* free digital copy promotion, Marvel is proud to announce that now every issue of Avenging Spider-Man’s action packed first arc, will be polybagged with a code for a FREE digital copy! So when you purchase any print copy of Avenging Spider-Man #1, #2 AND#3 from the blockbuster creative team of Zeb Wells & Joe Madureira, you’ll get a free digital copy of that issue on the Marvel Comics app (for iOS and Android devices) at no extra cost!

“At New York Comic Con we heard from fans and retailers that this was the most exciting digital comics move of the year because of the added value it gives every copy of Avenging Spider-Man,” said David Gabriel, Marvel SVP of Sales. “Based on initial orders of over 100,000 units for the first issue—and the steady increase in orders since we’ve begun promotion on this plan—we knew that including a code for a free digital copy in future issues of Avenging Spider-Man not only excites our retailers, but incentivizes fans to come into stores for one of the year’s hottest new releases. It’s a win-win for everyone with no extra cost to readers and an increased revenue share for retailers.”

This November, no fan can miss the release of Avenging Spider-Man #1, available in stores with free digital copy and on the Marvel Comics app.
Retailers: Check The Diamond Retailer site for a detailed FAQ addressing any questions you might have about this new initiative, historic benefits to retailers and the Marvel Mailer for more information.*Please note that Avenging Spider-Man #1 With Free Digital Code is the name of the book on the Diamond retailer site and that each of these issues will be polybagged.

So if you thought getting issue #1 for free was great, now you can also get the second and third issue for free digitally as well. Sounds good to me.

Here's the covers to those issues.

DC pioneered the idea, but Marvel redid it better. This is the way it should be, for every single issue, not just for specific issues.

Will over at Tested has been saying they should do this with books for a while now and I completely agree. It's a great idea and will encourage people to who might not have checked out digital distribution to do so.

This is awesome! Why should I have to pay more to read comics digitally if I already bought it? Now if only they did this with every comic, and had the option to buy only digital for a reduced price. And if the digital version was DRM-free? Now that would be really awesome. DRM-free Digital for $0.99, and Print+Digital for $2.99. A guy can dream.

By the way Mad draws like the sweetest looking Moloids I have ever seen.

@Schabbe: This will be stand alone. All you need to know about this book is that you probably won't see a lot of Peter Parker. By that, I mean that this is strictly a super-hero book.

Glad to hear that. That is a good bussiness move. DC you have to pay extra money for a digital copy. So, seeing Marvel making some digital copies free that will make more people want to buy it.

Yeah I'll be the one to say this, I think this is the most pointless thing Marvel has done. This has no value to me, why do I need a copy of something I already bought? Not trying to put anyone down who buys both a real comic and the digital version I just think its silly. Just make your comics cheaper marvel. Is it really 'free' when it's a four dollar book anyway?

FREE Digital Copy included is the way to go!!

Some European comics, not many, started doing it as well "over here".

Avenging Spider-Man? Really?

Joe Mad? Really? The first three issues are done, he hurts his wrist masturbating and we sit around waiting for a year and a half for the next issue, get it and its put on "indefinite hiatus". Yeah, that's right, I am still pissed about Battle Chasers and the crapfest of Ultimates Vol. 3 did not endear him to me as a comic reader.

He is going to dump the book as soon as he gets hired for another video game. Like usual.

Odd promotion as these issues probably would have ended up as free online issues without the promotional code, being that they're the secondary to a primary title.

Just saying.
