C2E2 2015: Marvel Announces CM Punk Will Write Ongoing DRAX Series

Marvel announced at C2E2 today that writer and mma fighter CM Punk will be writing a new, ongoing series at Marvel, following the exploits of Drax. Recently, Punk wrote a story in THOR ANNUAL #1 as well as a story in STRANGE SPORTS STORIES over at Vertigo.

This will be the first time Punk is tackling an ongoing series. DRAX will be hitting the digital and physical market in winter of 2015 and will have a co-writer working with Punk on the book, who has yet to be named..

Ed McGuinness has already put together a cover for issue one, but at this point in time, an artist is also unnamed. This will be the first ongoing solo book not only for Punk but also for Drax.

Awesome news. I love Drax.

Although Drax did have his own book once before, but it was only 4-6 issues. It was back around 2004 or 2005. It was where he resurrected as the Drax we have now, and was an introduction to Annihilation. It's true that this is his first ongoing though.

Now when in the heck is Gamora getting a book??? She's the most bada$$ of all the Guardians!!!

As much as I hate CMnPunk's character as a wrestler, he himself is a really cool guy from what I can tell of his work off camera, and his story for Thor was really cool. I think he's a good fit for Drax, assuming he's knowledgeable of the character, which given his love of comics, and how much time he has to get ready, I'd say he'll be a Drax pro by that time.

Hopefully they make him highly intelligent again, like he was in DNA's run, instead of the big idiot he kinda is now in Bendis' stuff. In DNA's run after his resurrection, he was able to kill Thanos with prep (not annihilation death Thanos, but Thanos imperative where Drax no longer had his super power that was basically an ability that just let him kill Thanos). Drax also was able to kill every single being on Knowhere with prep, and bring them all back to life, so that way he could discover who the Skrulls were on board, as they go back to their Skrull form at death. Pretty smart dude, hopefully we will see that Drax again, along with the crazy kill everything Drax.

I'm actually really excited. Aside from the fact that he's one of my favorite wrestlers, I'm really excited to see what he's truly capable of as a writer. This seems like the perfect series for him

I'm not buying this but I'll check out the reviews to see how this goes. His Thor story wasn't bad.

CM Punk sure is having fun skating around on WWE fame doing whatever he wants. First getting into UFC for free, now the comic industry. I'm sure there are more deserving aspiring writers, but let's just see how this goes. I wish him luck

While I loved the movie I really hope she doesn't write the GotG characters like they were in the movie.

As someone who hasn't been a fan of CM PUNK and is concerned about him coming out of left field to write can he really do much worse with Drax than what Bandis has done?

What does 700 mil in the Box Office do....

"Always trying to tie the comics to the movies" is probably the biggest reason Marvel has been disappointing me a lot lately. I'm only reading one book from them, and it's getting cancelled for Secret Wars.

@xwraith: I took a break off Spider-Man, because it's non-important, poorly-written sillyness over there, so it's practically only Spidey 2099 and Batman for me.In general.

Drax with solo title?? Hmmm... if only it were the old Drax and not the present day one, i would give it a try.. easy pass for me.

@dernman: @jonny_anonymous: I agree with Johnny, while Gamora's character has a few differences, she's not THAT different from her character 2005 and on. As far as comics to movie interpretations go, Gamora could have been a lot worst.

I didn't say that,but you can't deny that his status as a popular pro wrestler has helped him enter UFC and become a writer more easier than it probably would take a normal person.

@tparks: While I don't agree they're the same I do agree they could have done worse like say what they did to Drax.

If you mean pre Bendis around Annihilation Drax then I totally agree.

Well it certainly made it easier for him getting in to MMA but it's not like he was the first person to do that and I doubt he will be the last. I don't think they would have just gave him a writing job for nothing either, he has done stories at Marvel and Vertigo before and he's wrote introductions as far back as AvX.
